Is this the real life?
I commented that approximately 6 seconds before u did
No, this is Patrick.
Is this just fantasy?
no it’s not
Caught in the landslide
As someone from the Czech Republic I am very glad you covered this topic. It was very informative :D
And a little correction. Bohemia still exists, more or less. It's 1 of the 3 main regions of The Czech. Rep. - Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia
Jak by jinak poznat čecha: :D
May I ask where you live now ? I live in USA. My grandfather died in 1993 here. His mother , a Krejci, was born in Bohemia and emigrated to USA before 1900. His Czech father was already in USA. 3 Uncles also emigrated and the family is very very large now .
Hope this finds you well after the last year the world has experienced 💜
@@NurseLucyAndTheLaw Still in Czechia.
Do you have any idea where were yours ancestors from specificaly ?
@@Lord_Imperius I know we have that information. I will ask my aunt where my grand grandmother was born.
Well, to be more accurate Bohemia still exists, and it's one out of three regions that form Czechia. Also it would had been great you mentioned the extension of bohemia made by the nineteenth-century french poets like Baudelaire or Rimbaud, who took this term from the gypsies peoples living in France. From what I have studied, the lifestyle of this poets is the origin for the current "bohemian" meaning, and not La Bohème, which was represented for the first time in 1896, after the popularization of their lifestyle and poetry.
Czechs don't call the historical region of Bohemia that way. They call it Čechy. And the administrative regions of Central Bohemia and South Bohemia are only named this way in languages foreign to Czech people as they are called, in the Czech language, Středočeský kraj and Jihočeský kraj.
Bohemia is the Latin word for the land of the Czech's, just as Germania is the Latin word for Deutschland.
@@roxwell4716 Anymore? Did we ever call Čechy Bohemia? No! It has always been České knížectví, later České království than Československo and Česká republika now.
@@rodlczyeah we did, the political and high level administrative language in Bohemia used to be Latin. Hence, all of our own legal documents name the area Bohemia, never anything else, at least speaking of 12th-18th century
NameExpl. :"Bohemia existed untill 1993"
M: Wait, what?!
And fun fact The Kingdom of Bohemia in the 14. century controlled also regions of Moravia, Silesia, Laussitz and even Brandenburg.
Even now most of Czech Regions (or Krajs) are named after the historical region of Bohemia (for example the Central Bohemian region)
We also have the word bohemia in arabic..
We say Al-hayat Al-boohimiya ( bohemian life) for people who live their life without carrying about people. Laws or future they just live their day
it's a philosophy of living which is most of the time related to sufi sect of Islam
In polish there's a word for it as well, but it's not commonly used. It's "Bohema". There's even popular polish song Wilki - Bohema, but actually probably no-one notice what is this song about.
@@kacpersuski4459 We also have the word 'Bahema' in Arabic which refers to a 4 legged animal but is also a metapher for someone incapable of thinking (very stupid person)
What!? Bohemia is not used anymore?
In Iceland we use it to describe the lands around Prague all the way to the German border and to the border of Moravia in eastern Czechia.
We Bohemia and Bayern
Bohemia = Bæheimur
Bayern = Bæjarland
I'm czech and we still use it. Czechia (Česko) is the whole country and Bohemia (Čechy) is exactly the lands you describe.
Ég vissi ekkert að við notuðum það, læri altaf eitthvað nýtt.
Takk fyrir from Bæheimur (I used to live in Iceland)
Czechia or Czech republic is the correct form of saying it but if you say Bohemia you'll be fine unless you go to Moravia and Silesia they will get pissed
Of course it us used Bohemia is Bohemia it never went away just don't call the entire country Bohemia because that's a good way to get drowned in wine.
Bohemia still exists. Where did you get 1993 date (division of Czechoslovakia)?
It would be Bohemoslovakia then lol.
What a coincidence I'm watching this video in Bohemia
Now listen to Bohemian Rhapsody to complete the circle
@@AB-gw6uf Already done that, but thanks for the notification

How very Bohemian of you.
Not a county. Kingdom. The first actual kingdom in HRE.
TheDemixzer it wasn’t always a kingdom
It’s not a kingdom anymore, it’s not like it’s its own country, no it’s a county
historically a kingdom yes but after ww1 with the dissolution of austria-hungary name bohemia was abandoned in favor of czechoslovakia. it is still the name of a part of the country today
Duchy of Bohemia, Kingdom of the Bohemian Crown
I am always reminded of the Sherlock Holmes story 'A scandal in Bohemia'
Don't forget Bohemian Rhapsody
Czechia (Czech Republic) is made up of 3 regions - Bohemia + Moravia + Czech Silesia
Bohemia is basically half of Czechia. When I hear Bohemia I think of Czechia. I will never think of the Bohemian "Fake" Culture. The Czechs do not have that culture.
I know I am a Pole. I am from Poland. Poland, Czechia and Slovakia are West Slavic Siblings.
Yes my lechite brother! but you poles are kind of the odd1's out cuz i can translate like 80%-90% from Slovak but with the poles it's max 20%-40%
Hey, greetings from the Bohemia... :)
Well basically the Bohemia still exists, it's just one of the three major parts of the Czech Republic...
I learned so much during first 20 seconds of this video. I didn't know Boii people existed.
They inhabited Bohemia until 60 BCE, then moved, Germanic tribes came and then Slavic Czechs. Name stayed with the region, and through Latin it was transferred to other languages.
Well, about the "moving" part.
That is 19 century idea about what have happened. From the genetical studies of the people of the region it seems more likely they were simply integrated (maybe by force, maybe peacefully) into the Germanic tribes and were later most likely conquered by Czechs. However, there was most likely no moving involved
Congrats on 200k!
Hope your channel keeps growing!
God bless!
*Queen wants to know that location*

Czech Republic.
Fun fact
In Danish language we have two words for bohemian; being a bohemian or being a person from Bohemia
Bøhmisk : a thing or person from Bohemia
Boheme : a person acting bohemian
Probably the best idea for a video so far! I’ve always wondered what the term bohemian had to do with actual Bohemia.
2:50 Moulin Rouge (2001) was also an adaptation of La Boheme.
Your channel is great!
I'm very happy you did this video, not only to educate myself about my ancestors but also others
I got your book and it is an amazing read. Even though I am not a patrion (not that I don’t want to) I’m still glad I can support your channel. Keep it up
Nice video Patrick! :D
Thank you for the awesome video, Name Explain! Well buddy, I thing this is the perfect time to make your next video about the term 'Goth/Gothic' and how it evolved from being the name of a giant germanic branch, with their own language and alphabet with homonymous names adjective, to not only the name a very important architecture style, but also to a widely spread writing style as well as to a whole subculture in our days, the Goths, which got these dark, magic, and also ancient but fancy atmosphere along with their music, the gothic one, which has also developed into many sub-branches. That'd be an important chapter hehe, due to the lack of info in CZcams thereof. Again thanks and I love your channel, greetings from Colombia.
yeah id like to see that
yeah i'd like to see that
As a Czech this was really interesting
Your explanation of Bohemian sonds hippy to me. In Serbia we have Bohemian lifestyle but it's nothing like what you said here. It is based on living traditionaly, liking old folk music, being formal, socialy drinking... Most of Bohemian people in Serbia are professors, teachers, doctors, lawyers, folk singers...
Here in czech republic, bohemian (bohém in our language) mean that you enjoi life, you drink a lot, eat and relax, not worring about whot happens "free life style"
That's also right, but the main meaning of Bohemian is person from Bohemia. But in Czech language it's not Bohemia, it's Čechy (Čechy = Bohemia, region X Česko = Czechia, country). In English for terms "bohém" and "Čech" is used the same word - Bohemian (Čech) and bohemian (bohém)
Hope it helps!!! :D
I live near a town called Bohemia here on Long Island but it's nothing like the original
In germany we say "Freigeist" what means "Free ghost"
@Eduardt Storberg English is not my mother tongue
I once had a conversation with someone who wanted to show off by saying "Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue" was one of his favorite artworks.
3:10 OMG Okoř castle, my childhood castle...nice touch. I biked there and back many, many times. Even looked for a treasure chest, played soccer under it...There is even a yearly event "Do Okoře bez Oře" (To Okoř without a horse) you either walk or bike to Okoř, there are several lengths/difficultes, and then you get a diploma and a chocolate medal.
Also, a song exists, about Okoř, it's white lady/ghost...

In sports there are some teams named Bohemia/Bohemia. There's that football club from Dublin playing in the League of Ireland, an American football team from Maryland, an amateur football club from Bristol. One of the oldest football clubs in Asia where the Barcelona legend Paulino Alcantara first played in his native Philippines is named Bohemian Sporting Club.
so Bohemian is basically a synonym of hippies?
In "Queens" Bohemian Rhapsody I think the word Bohemian references the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini called "La Boheme" which is set in 19th century Paris and features impoverished artists who live unconventional lifestyles.Mediaeval French people mistakenly believed Gypsies came from Bohemia(Czechia) and they lived wandering unconventional lifestyles and the term was applied to people who lived the same way -in other words Urban hippies!
The Bohemian Club and Bohemian Grove are gathering places for American bohemians.
They were at one point, not anymore. I worked at Bohemian Grove for a couple of summers after high school as part of the catering staff and it's seriously one of the lamest events you can imagine.
When you witness someone like Jeb Bush crying and throwing a tantrum over not being brought a milkshake until after supper, you become pretty disillusioned with the popular notion that this is some sort of nefarious gathering of powerful men where child abuse and sacrifice are practiced alongside geopolitical strategizing.
They used the name improperly like they put the name Tesla on cars.
Dude! Nowadays Bohemia is best known for being the setting of the video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance. How could you not know that? :) There's also a fictionalized version of Bohemia in the Sherlock Holmes story "A Scandal in Bohemia"; when Doyle was writing the historical Bohemia no longer existed, which meant he could make the King of Bohemia a character in the story without being sued. The same story similarly mentions the Kingdom of Scandinavia. Anyway, good choice for a topic; I've often wondered how a region in central Europe came to be associated with artsy and eclectic style.
when Roma gypsies went through Bohemia they picked up some custom's and even mixed traditions because some assimilated or married them and went to the next road, some of us are both. The term Boho gypsy or Bohemian gypsy in America turned into a style fraise rather than an uncomfortable word that is used to describe Romani people, Gypsy was referred to Roma's that came Through Egypt Africa /Middle east to get to Europe and Originated from India, they mixed with the Israelites and moved onward, That's why Bohemian/gypsy Style is often Tribal-esk or Multicultural and funky because its meant to be a melting pot of textiles and decor as if they'd travelled or collected. false assuming that Bohemian or gypsy means someone freespirited festive culture.
Most of my ancestors assimilated into the environments they lived in so they wouldn't have alot of where they came from, some of my Bohemian ancestors were emissaries that envoyed back and fourth so they would have been able to read and interpret. My gypsy Roma ancestors also were interpreters and accumulated whatever they were given,
i've been wondering this forever! thank you!
Please do a vid about Bohunks!
From a group of people into a lifestyle I encountered something similar browsing through the archives of century old newspapers. Turns out that before WWI major European cities were plagued by the Apache (Apashe) who were simply criminals wearind red scarves. It was a major forgotten problem but it's more likely it was just a common name for various gangs in different countries rather than a single organization.
I just happened on this video now, even though I've been a Patreon member for 9 months, and it's exciting for me to read all the comments because my grandmother's birth certificate states that she was born in Bohemia. That was in 1906, so she's been gone awhile, but I've always wanted to know more about her birth country, and my own roots. Thank you all! Oh, and I'm born and raised in Canada, so no where even near, unfortunately
Now I find out it was a Kingdom, not a country. Didn't know 🤔
What I thought Bohemian meant before: People who's first language is Czech.
I could be also German as one third of Bohemians used to speak German as first language
Because that's exactly what it means. Bohemian means a person from Bohemia aka the largest region in The Czech Republic

If Bohemia ever becomes independent Bohemian Rhapsody would be their national anthem
Bohemian’s Bohemia
it was a big kingdom back in the day
A) Bohemia still exists (its called Čechy in the Czech language and its the biggest part of the Czech Republic)
B) Romani were not called Bohemians in Bohemia - obv - that would make not sence they were called like that in France later as it was thought its their homeland
C) The word with the meaning as its know today comes from French language.
Please do bourgeoisie!!!
Bourgeoisie is actually a get man creation called the bergers.
Bourgeoisie is the French name… I learned that today
you gonna do the buggers sometime?

2:20 King of Bohemia gave Roma protection … but HOW DID *THEY EXCLUSIVELY* GET THE NAME BOHEMIAN that we use today
2:30 music, storytelling and the arts in general (basically like so many places of serfdom this was seen as a bad thing)
3:20 Jennine Harkins
To be Bohemian means to be from Bohemia wich still exists. While it might be used to mean some culture wich frankly I do not know a lot about nor care but Bohemian is a person from Bohemia.
So Bohemian as in lifestyle comes from the Bohemian Roma people. Roma people and Gypsies originated in India, and then migrated into European.
And Bohemian Rhaspody was by Freddie Mercury, who was also from India, but migrated into Europe.
I thought Mercury was from Iran?
@@dominicguye8058 he was Parsi, a religious group that fled Persia during the Middle Ages into India.
Also Shakespear wrote that Bohemia is the land with deserts and pyramids. Which is actually Egypt from which Gypsies got their name.
Bohemian: Free spirited
Rhapsody: Peice of music where parts aren't repeated (verses, chorus)
Well to us Czechs alot of people or we ourselves refer to as Bohemians becouse we live in bohemia (We're czechs as in Czech republic there are 3 states: Bohemia, Moravia, Czech Silesia) So for example if you say a Bohemian car 1:40 we'd say Škoda becouse that's a Czech car made in the Region of Bohemia.
in germany the terms are fairly separate: the place is called "Böhmen" whereas the lifestyle is known as "Bohème" (with a french-like pronounciation) and the relatedness of the two terms is not very obvious..
Perhaps Bohemia is the place inspired the most musical works:
- La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini
- La Boheme by Charles Aznavour
- Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
:-0
Please explain why places like Manchester and Dorchester end in Chester.
There is a german saying: "Das sind böhmische Dörfer für mich." ("These are bohemian villages to me.") The meaning is, that you don't understand anything. It is because at the border in bohemia, german was spoken. But in the center only czech (or bohemian). And a person, who can only german at a journey to Prag the villages in the center are complete ununderstandable.
"who can only German" Das ist Denglisch vom Feinsten. xD
@@garygartenzwerg9870
Man kann es auch einen schlechten Versuch nennen, den Gedanken ins Englische zu übersetzen.
And there is a czech saying: "To je pro mě španělská vesnice." ("This is spanish village to me.") With the same meaning as the aforementioned german phrase.
Please, make a video on gypsies / romanies !

Could you PLEASE do a video on the term “Gypsy” (Often seen as synonymous with bohemian)? It has recently become a controversial term and is now usually replaced with the original term of racial heritage “Roma” or “Romani”. But are there instances in which it someone can be a Gypsy or Gitano, but not of Romani descent? And in that case, it would be inappropriate to refer to such an individual as Romani, right?
Please and thank you!!!
YES!!!

Hey, Henry's come to see us!
The dutchy is bohenia is that size but ain't the kingdom of bohemia also includ Moravia and a part of i think its upper Silesia
No, it's not like that. The Kingdom of Bohemia, the Margrave of Moravia, the Principality of Silesia and the Principality of Lusatia together formed the Crown Lands of Bohemia, or the Czech/Bohemian Lands often erroneously abbreviated to Bohemia.
Bourgeoisie is a noun for the collective class for the Middle Class. Bourgeois is the singular noun or adjective. More modern day adjective is bougie (BOO-zhee) which is usually applied to someone trying to act like that they are upperclass. As previously stated bourgeois meant middle class, it came from those who live in towns/urban areas. Marx used the term for the capitalist/factory owners. The industrial revolution had been initiated originally by the middle class as the nobility was happy living off the labor of the peasantry & the peasants had little opportunity to change their lot in life or money to invest.

hey i know this video is 5 years old but i just stumbled upon it now & wanted to add my thoughts! the Romani people could definitely be considered “wanderers” as you stated here, but that wandering was originally done by the Roma people in order to escape/stay safe from the constant persecution & oppression they faced for hundreds upon hundreds of years. also just to lyk, the term “gypsy” is a racial slur against the Romani people-so if you/anyone else sees this, it would be best to not use in your casual speech & make sure to explain the charged background + give the same warning if you are using it in an educational context, like this could be considered.
