Can't believe this video isn't viral. I've watched a dozen tutorials on lighting, and this is BY FAR the most useful, straight-to-the-point video on the topic.
Thanks Ann! I'm glad it helped!
I dont know who needs to hear this and I never do this but to everyone here that looked this video up in hopes to start a youtube career like me, good luck 🤞 I pray you have fun and it is lucrative for you! 🥰
Thanks for watching Jasmine!
Man, I can't express just how helpful your videos have been. Thanks so much for your selfless approach and great delivery of awesome info. I have a culinary podcast in the works, and your videos have been incredibly helpful in getting me set up for success from the FIRST.
Awesome! That’s so cool. Let me know when your podcast is out and rocking would love to see it in action!
This is by far the best video about lighting! You actually talk about the problems people have and share how to solve them! This video helped a ton!
Thanks Alexander! Glad it helped!!
"Remember that these lights are just tools, you are in control of them, they're not in control of you" Ben Johnson, Dec 17, 2020
🤣
Super helpful. It’s been a while since I used this in-studio method and I haven’t worked with color lights before, so as I’m looking to really dive into content creation this year, these were some great tips. Thanks man!
Awesome glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video. I've been looking at simple lighting set-ups for home video production, but until now had no concept of how to position anything. You answered lots of questions!
Thanks for that very lucid, clear and to the point video. You got straight to the point without any fluff and it was beautifully shot! Big props!!
Thanks Gavin! Glad you enjoyed!
So helpful!!! I love that you showed real examples bringing the exposure up and down and the comparison! Keep it up :)
Thanks Naty!
Helpful. Gotta try this!
Go for it! Hope it helps ya out :)

I started watching you almost a year ago. Got so much from your content, but as a beginner at everything couldn't implement it all. Now I'm back with better equipment and more experience and able to absorb so much more. Thanks so much :)
Great to hear!
Stumbled on your channel and very happy I did! Some really great tips in this video, Ben! Turning down the light hitting the subject and adjusting the exposure in camera is definitely a game changer!
For sure! Don’t go toooo far with bumping iso up, but you can definitely play around with it some
Said it before and I'll say it again : great channel, useful for budding creators like us. A but congratulations on your superb growth 👌
Thanks so much Patrick!
Amazing! Would love to see a home dance/gym studio lighting video as well! I am turning my basement into a studio to record some dance videos 😊
I’ve shot quite a few dance videos! Mainly on location but the principles apply, I may do this soon! Thanks for watching and asking!
@@benjohnsoncreative Awesome, looking forward to it!

@@benjohnsoncreative YES PLEASE!
You don't know how grateful I am for this video. Struggling more than six months and spending lots of money on different lights and RGB and not satisfied the result. I wish I watched it long before. Thanks thanks thanks
Awesome Nabi! Glad you found it!
Really helpful the way you showed the shadow sinking as the light was raised. Simple concept but seeing it in action makes the difference! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks Doug! Appreciate that 🙏🏻
I was just looking for this. Great video bro!
Haha well I’m happy that you found it Joshua, thanks for watching 🤘🏻
5:04 this is exactly what I struggle with now! Thank you so much for wonderful tips! Thank you Ben
Awesome glad it helped, thanks for watching!
SUPER GOOD INFO! I'm a beginner yet have a OCD-Ish way of working. I will play with my lights all weekend to at least utilize the lights I do have. The concept of building the lighting as you go is somewhat to a music producer/arranger goes through. From silence, to organized sound. Sequences, etc... its important to break things down this way so we understand. Great tips, and thank you!!!!
Awesome I’m glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!!
The way this was shot and put together is refreshing! Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching! And thanks for the feedback! 🤘🏻
OMG THANK YOU!! I have literally been searching all week for this information!! Question what should the White balance setting be for this type of setup? Idk if it is my exposure or white balance but I’m noticing my lights do not look as colorful in camera as they do in person. I believe I have my WB set to Tungsten and my ISO is 100 my blue light looks more white than blue and my pink light looks like a faded purple. I’m going to definitely try your exposure tip. I just wanted to know how the white balance effect everything when using RGB lights as well. Thanks for teaching me your videos are helpful I dropped out of photography classes after two weeks 7yrs ago lol it was too complex but people like you are the best instructors for people like me. Your content is very much appreciated!! Thank you!!
Wow thanks so much for your kind words! Yes white balance will affect the color
I would turn off your key and fill and rim lights and leave on the rgb lights. Then watch the camera and adjust the white balance until it looks how you’d like. If you end up at like 4600k or 5600k or whatever it is, then set your key and fill and rim lights to that
Really helpful, Ben. Thank you so much for the effort. Btw, your titles and annotations look so crisp as well. Keep this up, man!
Thanks! You can see how I make those in this video: czcams.com/video/NF1ytdBcXd0/video.html
you have some of the most aesthetically pleasing content. its so clean omg my anxiety thanks you lol
Hahaha! Thanks so much! I’m glad that you’re enjoying the vids!
Dropped brightness level of lights, increased exposure of camera and raised RBG lights off the ground to sit just behind me. Incredible how much those three small changes have boosted the quality of my video. Background colour pops and I stand out even more while being well-light still. Super excited to feature the new setup in my next video/stream. Thank you for your great work Ben!
Awesome! So glad it’s helping! One quick note that I wished I would have mentioned: don’t raise your iso TOO much as it will get noisy/grainy. Just watch out for it :)
@@benjohnsoncreative Yeah I noticed that! Just a small bump from 1000 to 1250 was enough for me!
How do you increase exposure and get a colour enhancement? Im using my iPhone 14 to film and that colour enhancement only works for me if I increase saturation but then I turn orange! Some advice would really be appreciated 😊
Great stuff Ben! This is the 2nd video of yours I watched about lighting. I got level with you... Your content is PURE PLATINUM! I'm learning A LOT from you. Thank you Ben! Keep crushing it!
Awesome Andrew I am glad that you are learning and finding it helpful, I appreciate the feedback and encouragement! 🤘🏻
Thank you thank you for these light videos!! As somebody who does not have a film or media background, this is easy enough for me to understand and use for my own videos
Awesome Jenny! Have fun with it, and feel free to try, every space and light is different so sometimes you have to adjust and experiment til you get the look you want. This is just a starting point :)
Raising exposure part is where I was screwing up😊
Just make sure not to raise it toooo high :)
this video i search it from 2 month , god job 👌
Thanks Tamer glad you found it and glad it helped!
@@benjohnsoncreative 😍
You have went beyond your goal! Your contents are the best resource I've seen in the community so far.
Thanks so much Joseph that means a lot!!
love the video and one thing I love about your video is that there are informative and straight to the point. And I will try that light up method in my next video
Go for it Ron!
Ben! We tried to do the same with the lights you recommend (that are not the same you are using) but it doesn’t work. Because the minimum brightness is too bright, and all the background gets a lot of light. I guess you are using the falcon eyes, but they are too expensive, what else can we try?
You’ve got to angle the lights so that they don’t hit the background
What is the color of your backgroung?
There are 6 solutions to this problem you can try.
1) If you have enough space, move as far as you possibly can from the background. This is ideal anyway for a good feeling of depth in the image.
2) Change the angle of the key light so that it is either higher or further to the side of you. Making it further to the side will create more shadows and may be a really interesting look if you like it. If not, then another light or reflector can be used as a fill light to make the image more flat.
3) Cover your key light with one or multiple sheets of white fabric. This will make the light a bit more soft and more dim. Use more layers to make it as dark as needed. You can tape, clamp, or use any other method you want to attach the fabric.
4) Use negative fill to shape the light. Just search negative fill for examples on how to use it if you need. You can use blackwrap or black cloth for this to focus the light.
5) Edit the colors in post. If you are using an advanced editing software like premiere pro, you may be able to restore a lot of color by messing with your color correction. Of course this is less optimal than getting it right on set.
6) Change the lights. If all else fails and you want the colored background, this may be necessary. Of course, maybe you only need to change the RGB light to a brighter version.
I am searching for a donor or business partner to stand a famous youtube channel. In Bangladesh , it's too easy to gain 1 million subscribers by making creative tech or travel vlog videos. I have a computer setup and a lot of experience in video editing and photoshop... I need just a camera and background set up.. so, I am searching for a partner for my youtube channel
@athenas did you try the solutions listed? curious if you were able to get it to work as I'm thinking of investing in this set up

Thanks you may enjoy this video to see how I set up my newest studio shot: czcams.com/video/TBcMoR0laxk/video.html
Your channel has opened my eyes to details when it comes to lighting placement and creating CZcams content the right way that I didn't even know. I'm still working on buying more gear, but I want to make sure I take advantage of the gear I already have. One of the lights I own is a Yongnuo RGB Wand Light. I can control the color from an app on my iPhone. You just helped me crack the code with the settings though. I still have a lot of trial and error. But wow!!! You've just given me such a boost and I can't thank you enough! I definitely subscribed and I'm looking forward to seeing more tips and tricks from you as well.
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed the vid and yes that’s a great light! You said it well: trial and error. That’s how it works :)
@@benjohnsoncreative Thank you so much. I do have a question. What adapter do you use to bend the wand lights down or at an angle? I have a the regular light stand from Amazon where you just twist it on, but you can’t move it around or bend it.
best explanation i have seen so far on lighting basics. hell yea
