- Swapping the instrument Cluster in the Datsun 280zx! We're replacing the 85mph speedometer with a 130mph version today.
This is one small part of this build that I've wanted to do for a long time.Obviously the Datsun is capable of going over 85, but regulations of the time had the gauge cut short. Today we're finally fixing that.
Fortunately for this project, we are not going to have to do a dash removal. Despite a couple hiccups, the swap is relatively simple and straight forward. After installing the new guages, it really does make a big impact on the car's interior!
You may notice the the Datsun is sitting in a new garage. This is the home for the S130 build! Goodbye cold wet carport, and hello to the new 'The Left Pedal' Studio.

1979 had the 130mph speedo. 80-83 had the 85mph. 79s were the only year with the 5 digit odometer. 80+ got the 6th digit for the 100k+ mile display.
I did a 83 digital dash with the talking lady. I liked to switch from MPH to KPH when going fast to seem like you’re going faster than you are. My friends would actually think we were traveling at 140MPH when we were only doing ~85MPH getting on the on-ramp for the highway.

I had an 83,white,t-tops,burgundy leather,digital dash and 5 spd as my first car. I miss it! I just put a front paint matched air dam on it and some aftermarket wheels on it and it was a looker
Did you ever replace the digital dash with with the analog? Instrument panel that is.

For future reference, the clear plastic can easily be buffed out to get rid of the scratches and make it look new

my ZX has a 200 KPH speedo, no MPH markings on it. I think that translates to 124 MPH. Mine is an '83

Wilco farm store or ace has new screws also you should have hit up O'Reilly's and got a 10-pack of new light bulbs like $10 would save you a hell of a headache
does anyone make a digital speedometer for these?
How did your speedo work after your swap...i have been yold that you need to swap out the 85mph cable for the 130 mph cable at the same time because of the gearing in them. One wont correctly work with the other...cheerz!
mine goes to 120-130 ish and it is 1980' 280zx

Thank you! The steering wheel is a Grant Formula Silver. It came from Motorsport Auto with the Z horn button.
From what I see they only came in the 79 2+2
They were on the coupes as well. Wasn't limited to the 2+2.

Hey do you have a link to the steering hub that goes onto your Datsun? I have a steering wheel I think it’s a grant one and it’s five hole instead of the six hole steering wheel

Yep. My ‘79 280zx has a 130 mph speedometer while my Uncles ‘80 280zx has an 85 mph one.
So a stock 82 ZX can go faster than 85?
Has anyone replaced a digital instrument panel with a analog/traditional instrument panel? My 83 digital dash is fried.
Yes, do a search. Need dash harness. Dash must come out . I see digital on ebay all the time!
