  • Both Bryan Cranston and Jason Segel established themselves with long-running TV shows. Now both are playing real-life writers on the big screen: Cranston as the titular blacklisted screenwriter in “Trumbo” and Segel as “Infinite Jest” author David Foster Wallace in “The End of the Tour.”

      Excellent idea. For now I get my fill from Roundtable by the Hollywood reporter. Even though it is moderated by an executive of THR, there is still some great interaction and discussion. I'm looking forward to the possibility variety including more than just actors :)

      I actually started watching those for a research paper I wrote on female filmmakers on the industries view on why there is such a low percentage of them in Hollywood. I love that they aren't just on actors/actresses, they are on all different professions. I watched on with cinematographers.

      That’s the irony. Comedy is not easy, in fact it’s one of the hardest things for actors to do. It’s a shame there’s a bias in cinema towards comedic actors.

    • @alexman378
      @alexman378 Před 4 lety +5

      I feel like that was a big factor behind his casting. I feel like Vince wanted Walter to be as unlikeable as can be by the end, but in order to pull it off without losing the audience, the actor had to have something to keep them hooked, even at his worst. And Walter has some funny mannerisms, good comedic timing, little details from Cranston’s comedy background that kept us wanting him to win, even after we saw the horrendous things he was doing. I even heard that Cranston treated White and Heisenberg as two different characters he had to play, rather than sides of the same character, and if that’s true, it certainly shows.

      @@mylobage Comedy isn’t hard for an actor to do. Making most comedy movies good is hard for an actor to do. There are so many cliches and repeating themes and plots that just get boring after the 50th time seeing them played out on screen. Being funny in a good comedy with good writing isn’t difficult.

      That's all anyone can do. The internet is literally the modern bible. In the olden days, since holy texts are 100% meta-phorical, someone who is having real life problems would be turned onto a text like that in hopes that they would see a better way to live. Now, with so many people on the planet, meaning a larger range of emotions, problems, etc. still the best thing you or anyone can do is send a link specific to what you think is best for a loved one to hear. And just like in the olden days, once you've done that, they're on their own. I know this is pretty deep for an "actors on actors", but it still stands for any other info. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink it.

      Watched trumbo because I learned about the Hollywood 10 and the blacklist during the McCarthy era, although it is only an excerpt, it's a piece of history that shouldn't be forgotten about the dangers of fearmongering. Haven't watched the David foster Wallace film yet though

    • @richb313
      @richb313 Před 7 lety +2

      I agree Fearmongering is a dangerous thing but after fall of the Soviet Union when the KGB files were open for inspection it was learned that the Soviets had plants in the U.S. Government and the people who were accused by McCarthy were actually working on destabilizing the U.S. It was also confirmed the the U.S. Communist Party was also under orders from Soviet Russia to act as a forth column in order to turn public opinion against traditional values.
      Far too many innocent people were swept up in the chaos of the times but it must also be noted that the House not the Senate (McCarthy) which was investigating Communists working in Government was the ones on witch hunts yet today McCarthy is the one singled out yet he really had nothing to do with what the Democratically Controlled House was doing. Even the News Media of the time focused their attention on McCarthy hardly mentioning all the damage that the House was doing. Was it anything other that grabbing headlines? Was it the Media trying to discredit government investigations while giving the house a pass and for what reason?
      I was very young but I remember this but it was not until years later when I actually believed the proper narrative of the McCarthy era that I did some research and understood how history had been re-written.

    • @AW-ex8fn
      @AW-ex8fn Před 7 lety

      richb313 When you say house you mean HUAC right? I agree with what you're saying. History is not easy to decipher without digging in yourself as history is always written by those with power.
      Also just want to say this to be clear about why I used the term McCarhty era. Although the dominant narrative paints McCarthy as the all encompassing scapegoat/villain; it's just easy to define the era by McCarthy as it is the dominant narrative.
