- After earning Oscar nominations for their breakthrough film roles - Rooney Mara as the hardened sleuth Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and Steve Carell channeling John du Pont in “Foxcatcher” - the two actors are back with very different performances. Mara is shy and subtle as a young woman in the 1950s who falls for Cate Blanchett’s lead character in “Carol.” And Carell is all manic energy and heart in “The Big Short,” which details the individuals who cashed in on the recent housing collapse.

I have rarely seen Rooney enjoy an interview this much. She is so sincere and honest with Steve, it's incredible! We definitely need more of THESE kind of interviews.

Damn. Here we are again. This morning I woke up to a dozen old copyright claims being filed. As a result, having 3+ copyright strikes has my channel marked for deletion in a week. I'm waiting on responses from folks right now to try and get this resolved, but honestly I'm less than hopeful. As if I needed more reasons to stay away from CZcams, right? +launderground One thing about the emmys is, once they have a target in sight for the comedy categories they just keep firing. Same thing happened with Modern Family even when it started to become utter trite in its later seasons. Louis-Dreyfus has won 3/4 Emmys for her performance on Veep which seems kind of excessive but boy does she hold that TV show together. Funniest woman on TV.

I've been devouring anything to do with Carol, so I've seen a fair share of the pr stuff Rooney Mara has done supporting that film - and this is the first one I've seen that has given me a real sense of her smarts and good humor and personality in general. Steve Carell obviously put her very much at ease (he could do this for a living too - yet another hat) and I enjoyed listening to them both. Great interview.

+Lawlser I sincerely hope that Mara has a real shot at the Oscar, despite the odd treatment the Academy has given the movie. She would deserve it.

I haven't seen Rooney Mara in many movies but her performance as Lisbeth Salander just blew me away. Rarely have I ever felt as much for a character from the extremes to that last last scene in which she turns away from Mikael.
She gave it her all and it resonated. This interview reminded me that I have some catching up to do.

She’s very enigmatic and I love her understated humour.
These two are so complementary. They might be polar opposites externally as people in general, and also "belong" to opposite social circles, but introspectively, they're both really thoughtful and gentle that they play off each other's ideas really well. Kate has a good sense of humour despite her aloof demeanor, and Steve has a cold-cut analytical side despite his goofy mannerisms. Would love to see them again in another discussion.

That... was surprisingly nice. Not that I'm surprised that the brilliant Steve Carell has interesting things to say, but I didn't know that about Mara (only that she was sophisticate, which is already something), and they could have not gotten along (as a matter of fact, they do have chemistry !). So far, it was the best AoA segment I've seen. Coincidentally, their two movies are brilliant...
+SCharlesDennicon Completely agree that this was the best one. They flowed very well together. I like Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet as actresses, and they seem like great people, but they talked over each other a lot and didn't seem as coherent. I think that has a lot to do with Rooney's personality, very introverted and likes to observe in the corner while not saying much.
carol is one of the best movies of this decade, the acting and everything about it is so detailed and nuanced. of course rooney mara is beautiful, she just has to smile and im in.
steve has matured so much as an actor, its so great to see him working to his full potential, the big short was amazing and he has a big part in that.

Perhaps a wonderful actress -- which matters above all, but quite emotionally flat, physically skinny and not particularly attractive or interesting/unique here. She may be creative or interesting -- but not here. Without Steve Carrell, this would be essentially a waste of time....I'm trying to get it, perhaps need to see more of her films.

Also, I am a huge fan of David Fincher... just look at my name and profile pic.. but i think that they rushed this movie to much.. it did come out a year after The Social Network, which btw.. was a FANTASTIC movie.. top 5 best Fincher movies for sure.

I love these set of questions, they’re quite different from what I expected. They genuinely want to understand the process and skills that happen in their acting careers, and of course, what it feels and what it takes to become your character.
I think they both stated pretty clearly how they hate talking about their acting process.

I googled her and her sister, and I was shocked to find out that they are 30 and 32, respectively. I thought they were about 24 and 26. She seemed like the older sister.
Thought she was early 20s but, she looked like a teen in the movie.

Two of my favorite stars in family movies collide in this interview. Steve Carell played the character of Gru in "Despicable Me 1-3" and Rooney Mara played the character of Tiger Lily in "Pan". Now, two of these stars nominated an Oscar in the same year twice. Nice going, you guys!

+clrscr you can't go by that. they only publish release dates and sometimes movies are delayed in their release. you would have to know when a movie wrapped filming and when another movie started production to truly know a years gap.
she states in another interview that she originally turned down carol as she needed a break after girl with the dragon tattoo and took a year out so that must be what she is talking about
can't be. they filmed carol last year around this time. tattoo was filming in january 2011 in the u.s. and wrapped filming before the spring.
+clrscr I wouldn't be surprised if it were. From what I've read/heard, he's a perfectionist who demands perfection from everyone he works with and I guess that can be quite taxing on someone.

Just came back from the movie theater: 'The Big Short' is a must see item - one of the best movies I've seen in a long time - in any genre. Great writing, perfect ensemble cast, awesome directing/editing, great ''off beat' cinematography, sometimes feels like a documentary. And a great story, I'm buying Michael Lewis' book as well.
