  • Jedi Knight series review. The Kyle Katarn series - Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy.
Star Wars Dark Forces was released for DOS PC and Mac in 1995 and later ported to the PlayStation. Dark Forces introduces us to Kyle Katarn and his partner and pilot Jan Ors. After having successfully stolen the Death Star Plans, Kyle is again hired by the Alliance to infiltrate and disrupt an Imperial cell who are developing super battle droids known as Dark Troopers.
The Dark Forces PC game came out two years after Doom and was bemoaned on its release as being another “Doom Clone”. But in a lot of ways Dark Forces was more sophisticated than ID’s shooter.
Dark Forces made one hell of a splash, selling near enough a million copies over its lifetime, almost making it into the top ten selling PC games of the 90s. Dark Forces remains one of my all-time favourite Star Wars PC games and even today it’s impact is well-remembered.
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight followed in 1997. The PC FPS genre had changed considerably since Dark Forces and LucasArts was competing against ID’s Quake. Dark Forces 2 PC game supported hardware acceleration, one of the first engines using Direct3D.
Jedi Knight, the second game in the Jedi Knight PC game series sees Kyle picks up his first lightsaber. As the PC game goes on, Kyle develops Force powers which the player can upgrade between levels, from both sides of the Force. Dark Forces 2 has two endings, depending on whether the player chooses to focus on the Light or the Dark Side. The Jedi Knight PC game was tremendously well-received both for the single player and also the online multiplayer.
LucasArts followed Dark Forces II PC game with the full expansion, Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith. Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith has some of the most significant crossovers with the EU; this is the only time Mara Jade appears as a playable character in a Star Wars game. In my review of the MotS PC game I said I actually preferred it to Jedi Knight, and it was fairly well received back in the day. The story is fantastic, and the way it weaves into the Expanded Universe is second to none.
The third PC game in the Jedi Knight PC game series is called Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Dropping Dark Forces totally, Jedi Knight 2’s development was outsourced to Raven Software. Powered by ID’s Quake III: Arena engine, Jedi Outcast’s lightsaber combat is what separated it from every other PC game. Jedi Knight 2 made it feel like you were controlling a more elegant weapon from a more civilised age. Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast features upgradeable Force powers, but this time Kyle’s powers unlock with no decision-making from the player. Easily the best story in any Star Wars PC game, Raven did a tremendous job of framing a flawed, human Jedi and voice actor Jeff Bennett delivers a great performance, Kyle’s anger always bubbling just below the surface.
Jedi Knight 2 was a PC game ported to Xbox and GameCube and smashed reviews on all formats. The best Star Wars game ever, the story and lightsaber combat is what gamers still rave about now.
LucasArts gave Raven one year to develop another game in the Jedi Knight PC game series, the sequel to Jedi Knight II. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy focused on customisation and player agency. Kyle Katarn teaches Jedi Academy’s protagonist Jaden Korr in the ways of the Force, and when Jaden discovers a new Sith cult is harvesting Dark Side energy from places like Hoth and The Valley of the Jedi, Katarn joins his protege on missions around the galaxy.
The player agency in Jedi Academy PC game sees players able to customise their look, choose from a variety of lightsaber styles as well as develop their own character over the series of the game. The ability to wield dual sabers or the saber staff for the first time blew a lot of gamers away and this keeps people coming back to the game even today. Jedi Academy is probably the most well-realised lightsaber game ever made. Nothing since has captured the variety and depth of gameplay that was on offer here. A fitting end to the Jedi Knight games series, it’s just a shame we’ve not seen any more of these Jedi PC games.
The Jedi Knight series of PC games survived the jumped to consoles, something which killed off other Star Wars PC game series.
The Jedi Knight games series remained one of the shining lights of the EU. This series of Star Wars PC games proved that a good story and the richness of the Star Wars universe was enough to make a great video game. The Jedi Knight PC games series is a great series of games, every game is recommended.

I always thought it would be funny if they just kept adding a new name to each game, but never dropped the previous ones:
    - Dark Forces
    - Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
    - Dark Forces 3: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
    - Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy

Technically speaking, there is one more game that should be added to that list: Mysteries of the Sith. It came I think one year after Dark Forces II did. So if that were the case, it would be:
Dark Forces 3: Jedi Knight 2: Mysteries of the Sith
Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast
Dark Forces 5: Jedi Knight 4: Jedi Academy
However, I think the reason why Mysteries of the Sith and Jedi Academy didn't put any number after the "Jedi Knight" portion of the title is because Kyle Katarn wasn't the central character in either of those games; he was demoted to NPC status in both.
To further this theory of mine, I only recently found out that there was to actually be a third entry in the Jedi Knight series (that would actually have had the number 3 in the title), that was to come out after Jedi Academy; it was going to be called Jedi Knight III: Brink of Darkness, and it was going to be meant to conclude Kyle Katarn's story in the series, which of course would mean Kyle was going to be the player character again. However, the game scrapped due to LucasArts simply deciding not to go that route, and as a result, no build was ever released or even made, to my knowledge anyway.
But, bottom line, since Kyle was going to be the central character in Brink of Darkness, that's why they would have named it "Jedi Knight III: Brink of Darkness" instead of leaving the number off of the title, which is what they did with Mysteries of the Sith and Jedi Academy.

It's sad that some people won't play these games just because, " the games are old and dont have pretty modern graphics." one guy complained about Jedi Knight's blocky graphics and It's annoying because to expect an older game to hold up to today's standards is ludicrous. That's why I tend to appreciate gameplay over visuals because visuals will always be the first thing in games that becomes dated.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  Před 6 lety +3

Absolutely. I've never been graphics over gameplay; I've always enjoyed playing older games. Don't get me wrong, when I saw Doom running on Raff's PC I was blown away by the visuals. But what kept me playing that game was the absolutely PURE gameplay. That game could look like hammered poodoo and I'd still clock up as many hours. You can't do much about the blocky models but there are some wicked patches out there to get 90s games looking sweet on a modern system.

How is it that there hasn’t been a game that tops Jedi Knight 2 from gameplay?. story has been done well since.. But gameplay has never been topped. The lightsaber combat is amazing still.. The ability to effect what move you are doing is great.. The stance/style changes as well.. The fun level was off the charts then.. Jedi Knight 2 made you feel like a bad ass.. The multiplayer let you test your skills against other warriors..
The online was so great that users themselves created in game role playing.. Bespin was the top map because of the landing pad.. Players would enter sitting/crouch, lightsaber off and 2 would fight in the ring.. The winner would fight challenger.. Its the only game I’ve ever played were Honor was actually a thing people cared about because of the depth of gameplay.. It’s a shame that Outcast isn’t getting multiplayer with the rerelease.. However Academy is.. And that had even more to it so I understand the desire to focus the multiplayer in 1 place.. If they go the extra mile on that product and add some more maps and some from Outcast and stuff they will be highly highly rewarded.. Hopefully the buzz makes those that can make a new game in the series sit the fuck up and do it. 👌

What a memories. It's funny, I played this game almost backwards. Jedi Knight II, then Jedi Academy, then all the previous ones. However this new Fallen orders brings hope. The lightsaber control and gameplay was the best I ever played since Jedi Academy. If they use Fallen Order to create another game, if this Fallen Order was a test that something planned for the next-gen, then we may be up to something promising.
You know, after this entire Disney/EA fiasco, between the horrible sequels and the Battlefronts, where everyone looks to the death of the franchise I hold much more positive than ever. Respawn just hit the spot, they just need to use Fallen Order combat system as a seed for something much bigger and ambitious. And now, with the whispers about something of a Star Wars universe "a la marvel", based in 500 years before Yavin with videogames and TV shows as main events, I have the feeling that we may be out of the dark and in hope for something as good as the original trilogy and the expanded universe, or even better. I have a good feeling about this.

We've had a few discussions on here about Jedi Knight online. Right back at the beginning of online gaming. I remember playing it at my mate's house on his 28k. Was a struggle to connect and to stay connected but we were bleeding edge man!

This entire video was a nostalgic journey through my early years of realising I loved Star Wars EU just as much as the original trilogy films.

Worth noting that Mara Jade actually does make another appearance in Star Wars the Force Unleashed in the multiplayer vs mode.

There's so much fun to be had with Jedi Academy's command console on pc. There's nothing like unleasing several sith, jedi, and a few wampas in a deserted hangar and watching the chaos ensue.
It's also fun spawning a wampa and jedi mind tricking your way into driving the thing in just about any and every level. I remember finding it particularly enjoyable sending stormtroopers flying off into the cloudy abyss on Bespin.

I would imagine you could potentially pull down the console in the modern console ports, to get that 2000s flavour.

Dark Forces 2 and Shadows of the Empire where the first 2 Star Wars games I owned and I have fond memories. I then bought X-Wing vs Tie Fighter after it and loved it as well.
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 were also amazing and didn't pick up a new Star Wars game until Force Unleashed which was ok but didn't have nearly the same impact on me as the rest. I need to try Fallen Order as it seems to be well received.

Really absolutely loved Academy. Just the fact you were zipping around doing little mini-adventures, trying to keep the peace and expanding your powers along the way.

Yeah the episodic format really worked for this game. And the fact that you could choose to do all the missions, or just the bare minimum was a really nice touch.

Nostalgia! Very well made Video, though you could have mentioned the still active multiplayer of Jedi Outcast and Academy which was and is for some people a big selling point, especially since JKA didnt have that great of a story.

I loved those games, favorite being Outcast and Academy, and it still burns my soul today to think they didnt use this as the basis for Rogue One. even though there were characters in it, just like Kyle and Jan

    • @VegetaLF7

It is sad that Rogue One didn't include Dark Forces references, but at least Rebels carries the spirit of the games on. Kanan is a blending of Rahm Kota from Force Unleashed and Kyle Katarn. Hera not only is voiced by Jan Ors' Jedi Outcast voice actress but she also wears Jan's flight suit and has a similar relationship with Kanan that Jan did with Kyle. Ezra wears one of the options that a male Jaden Korr could have in Jedi Academy, fitting as Jaden was Kyle's apprentice and Ezra was Kanan's. In one of the comics the Ghost crew even temporarily flies a HWK-290, the same model of ship that Kyle and Jan's Moldy Crow was. Where Rogue One dropped the ball on Dark Forces references, Rebels made it a point to honor that legacy.
