Yo, for all you idiots out there (the ones in the comments), you obviously didn’t listen to the lyrics right. Macklemore isn’t trying to tell you that drugs are bad and that we shouldn’t take them, and that they are all evil and we should never take drugs. He is trying to help us as a people understand drug abuse through the eyes of a victim of drug abuse. I love this song. My father left my family because he was not strong enough to change his habits. I am fifteen years old, and I don’t even know if he is alive. My mother was put into the hospital because she went off her depression medication and wanted to kill herself. If it wasn’t for that medicine, she would be dead right now. So, what Macklemore is actually saying is that yes, some people need help just to function, because if we as humans could control ourselves and our thoughts, suicide would not exist. But people do abuse it because doctors over prescribe medicine to fill quotas or to get more money.

Xanax for ex) will cause u to seize & die 1st hand. other types of withdrawals can kill u as well but it's 2nd hand causes. please if urge any1 who is coming off of any type of strong medications or street drugs that u get to a detox place. it's the safest & best for withdrawal symptoms.
Deanna young you have clearly never been an addict if you think going to a detox center is even close to an option for most people. either that or your rich and someone else helped you get off drugs/paid for your treatment. 6 months wait lists... sleeping it off actually works. first time I tried to get clean that's how I did it. took seroquil I think though. something that knocked me right out. trazadone works too. and is usually covered by drug plans. Def the most attainable option. but a waste of time if you don't think you're strong enough to stay off of it after you come out of the 4 week self induced coma . cause you never feel the same again. Normal is never achievable once you've been addicted to opiates. the only time you EVER feel that sense of "normal" is when you're high. you get sober and wonder where the hell all that energy and motivation came from in the past. because the drugs made you feel like superman . . if anyone reads this and goes the way of treatment please research suboxone. and try that route. i took my last hydro morph July 6th of 2015. got prescribed to suboxone the 8th and haven't looked back. It's still an opiate and doesn't mean I'm "clean" but there's no doubt it saved me.
Kelly B well for whatever reason u think u know "My" story, past or even my economics, I am an addict, always will be. but I've bn clean since July 5th, 2012. I did that without $, a facility, family, no suboxon & no help. All me!! it can be done in many ways. I only urged sum1 who may be detoxing, that it is dangerous & so hard!! yes, I think suboxon is a wonderful medication to help people in detox. my mom is on it, I've bn on it & many others I know. however staying on a regiment of suboxon doesn't insure ur sobriety to other drugs. yes, suboxon is a drug/opiate as well. I'm not knocking any1 or any methods. I find it strange that u are so quick to try & dismiss my sincerity & my advice. which is all it was, advice. from 1 once struggling addict to another who may still be struggling. anything I've ever learned about addiction or recovery, I've tried to share & to help. if thats wrong in ur eyes, maybe u should reassess u. I know oh too well of addictions. i know all about the horrors of active addiction. I've slept in the woods, I've done things I'll never forget, just to get high! I lost my daughter bc of it. family & friends who gave up on me & with good reason. I was on everything!! so coming off herion, coke, opiates, benzos & any thing else I could get my hands on, was hell! but I did it! resources are difficult to get, detox beds do have long waiting list & if u have no $ (as I didnt) it's really even harder. I was only offering advice. I see no wrong there. I lost my sister in March from an overdose, I woke to find my husband of 23yrs(also our 4yr olds dad) dead next to me in bed! overdosed!! I've lost more people to addiction then any other reason. it's a scary & real thing. I want people to educate themselves about addiction, but mostly about the dangers of detox & overdose. bc it could be u, me, them sum1z child, etc...no1 is exempt. I've also tried 12 step programs. did that about a year & a half. so I still use the basic principles & things I was told to help me everyday! 1 thing I recall is that until u have had a certain amount of clean time, u shouldnt give advice. but I think if u
ur strong in ur recovers, u could possibly help sum1 who isn't. with all this being said, I owed u no response or answer about my addictions or recovery from. I did it to maybe show that we r all just humans that make mistakes. sum of us worse then others. but every1 deserves to know the joy & freedom of living without using. also if ur recovering from opiate addiction, I hope u know that u can recover from the drugs. ur mind, body & spirit take time to heal. but it does heal. please read up on ur body & mind recovery from opiates. there is a vast amount of knowledge. if u dont know about that, then please don't tell sum1 u cant ever get right after using. I believe it's about 6mnths for opiates, until u start to have actual recuperation from opioid damage. well wishes to u & for u in ur journey in recovery. I hope all the best for u.

Oh & while we're discussing our issues..I don't barely sleep. never have since I was about 5yrs old. I've tried every type of sleep meds that are available. they don't work for me. so sleeping it off, wasn't an option for me. also withdrawal is so severe that u wouldn't be able to sleep. I was on seriquil, remron, trazadone & many many others. so again, like I said, all addiction is different as well as all recovery. may any1 searching for a way out & a way back, I hope u find it in any format that works for u.

The desire to be 'normal'. To smile when we're supposed to and not just do it but feel that smile. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song 'Kevin' (feat. Leon Bridges) is, by far, one of the most honest songs about prescription/alcohol use (i.e., Oxycontin, Ambien, Xanax, Adderall, alcohol, etc., etc).
Ruining one innocent life after another by taking one tiny pill or a gulp of alcohol to feel better (i.e., for a quick fix, to numb re: self-loathing, or in physical pain) until it grows into full-blown addiction then what happens when a person takes too much is emphasized with Leon Bridges lyrics "we're overprescribing . . . you're killing me, you're killing me."
The billion dollar industry of Big Pharma, political and criminal justice system failure (i.e., politicians, judges, prosecutors, incarceration system etc.) all play a part in this crisis.
I've seen it in my own family with several ODs and funerals. It's a raw, tragic reality of "the dose of the American dream."
Mainstream radio NEEDS to play this ad nauseam until every person hears it, really hears it.

Man this hits home. 8/25/13 I lost my little brother named Kevin. He overdosed on a pill a doctor prescribed him. And still to this day that doctor is working and has a good life. As for my family, my mom fell off and I'm trying to keep it together. Also 1/10/17 is kevins 21 birthday! This is a time I should be sharing with him.
