Who's watching this in 2024?
Leave it up to Macklemore to make one of the oddest but most mesmerizing videos ever. The guy is a true original talent. One of the best. Anyone who hates on him is clueless.
It isn't Macklemore's fucking song. Jesus does ANYONE read the title of the video where it says FT. MACKLEMORE

Who’s still feelin this song in 2023
Only legends🎉
Aaaaaah!!! I just remembered this song now😭 i love this song❤

2024🎉
Not many people know this song but me and my 2 other friends in 7th grade memorized it and all I can think of is us jamming to this song in the school bus on our way to our week long field trip. Damn. How times have changed.
But have you and your 2 friends heard my tune in? czcams.com/video/ZqypFFoDOiA/video.html
Omigoodness~~ I was in 6th grade when I heard this song. Now I'm a freshman in college and trying to figure out how to live my life MY way. I hope everyone doing well 😌✨
What’s your Instagram lol
Crazy how fences like only your comment lucky lol
I know this is fences song, but the way the song is written, where Fences repeats most of the lyrics, it almost seems like the song is half Macklemore and half Fences, but was put under Fences name to promote his album. The meaning of the song aswell seems to relate more to Macklemore's life which makes it seem more like his song.
And your point is...? ;)
But it was fences friend "speedy" that died.... (r.i.p)
Shlaboza
The song and video were made before Speedo died though. We know this because he's in the video(he's the old shirtless dude)
Peter Spurgeon Damn, sorry I didn't know that :/
The reason that this song is so 'Macklemore heavy' was because Ryan Lewis was the produced it. When Fences was recording Lesser Oceans, they had a Chris Walla produced version of this song that had 2 verses by Fences and just 1 (the last one) by Mack. Ryan Lewis simply "remixed" it so that it would be more radio friendly and so that Fence's album would get more attention.
The older man shooting the arrows was a very good friend of Fences who died shortly after this video, Fences describes his grief on his social media about the loss of this man. Their relationship is described in the song with "I felt slight connected to him" "boy, now you own me", which is talking about their incredible bond and even father ship role that this man brought in to Fences life, after the difficulties with parents he repeats at the beginning/end. For Fences this man was filling a huge emotional role and the song now takes on an even deeper meaning for the loss of Fences friend.
Terry(speedo) is my uncle im happy to see they dedicated it to him
That little dance the girl did after she found Fences spying on her is the cutest thing I've ever seen.
If you never listened to this as a kid, you were missing out
on GODD
Escape hope he don't mean like dying?
I'm still a kid

I'm sure a bunch of Wes Anderson fans, including myself, geeked out over this. Props to these directors, and artists, loved everything about it.
Macklemore tried to warn us about Harambe
Wes Anderson called, he wants his cinematography style back.
Nice one!
Rebecca Brose I was thinking the same!
Rebecca Brose That seems like a compliment, no?
Bebe Speaks Dead 😂😂😂
I'm late.
Don't you just feel that a song sometimes just clicks with you?
another good song that didn't make it to the radio
In Austria it did :)
thank god
Obviously made it in the Northwest (Washington, B.C., Oregon and Idaho).
Angel Ramos it was in Australia
It did? Well in California.
This is art.
Yeassss yes it is
Liquid Golem well that's Ur opinion and second if its "garbage" y r u even bother commenting on this "garbage"?
Agreed.
Liquid Golem Bro, chill with those words
Liquid Golem I'm pretty sure neither he nor his fans are a bundle of sticks
I listened to this song right when I got off meth 6 years ago.
It helped me. ❤
This is a song I wouldn't mind hearing on the radio from time to time.
i agree 👌
***** There a lot of songs I would like on the radio that just aren't played.
+bbomg02 cause they play all the same songs over and over, drives me nuts
***** Same. I have to listen to the hot 100 radio at random times, and I don't think I could all the time. That's why I prefer Pandora and such over real radio anymore. They repeat the songs far more now, an the variety is low. That's why I want to get more songs spreading. Songs like this or songs by Milk Teeth.
+TheHamish15 That's the point.
This song is actually pretty depressing and thought provoking. Such a deep verse Macklemore wrote. He's talking about his sudden fame and the fact that it is so very different from what he once pictured and imagined. He talks about how he doesn't sleep and that he's rushing towards his death because he's always so busy everyday passes by so fast. He also says that once the world finally saw the art he made and learned his name he wished he didn't make it. Poetic and tragic. I feel for him, and I'm sure many celebrities feel this way.
P.S. Ryan is also one of the cameramen during the circus / fame symbolism scene.@2:13 on the left
@@Cider_Brad I’ve been watching this video since it came out and I just noticed that. An 8y old comment came in clutch. Thanks brotha
Though this was 8 years ago, I finally see this perspective thanks to you. I appreciate that shit.
You guys do realize it's Fences ft. Macklemore right? You're all acting like its Macklemore's video and song. (Although some of his guys did direct the video. Like Koenig) still obviously a great song regardless. After Otherside remix with Fences, I really liked him. Happy to see the both of them in another song.
You're right ! This is an amazing song by FENCES .
Didn't Ryan Lewis produce it too? If anything it's 50 50. A ton of work was put in from macklemore's side.
Uriel Maldonado Absolutely respect that ! I think it's awesome that Ben and Ryan wanted to help their friends with the whole project not only a couple of verses .
Uriel Maldonado ryan lewis isnt owned by macklemore all macklemore did was rap and was in the video
Ryan lewis produced this track two different people lol but all friends making music together with equal amount of work
well, under written and created by it says macklemore and ryan lewis so.... but it doesn't matter who's song it is. after otheriside, im really happy to see another mack&rl ft. fences song. they are amazing together!
its kinda sad to see this song which has alot effort in it failing to be famous
it has 9 mill views so it kind of has made it, but it should have more
famous is a relative term
Well we need to start sharing this lovely piece of music!!!!
***** yeah, all they spam is the same typical beaty dubsteppy songs
The real stations played it like JJJ, just not the slime sellers.
This song was dedicated to my uncle Terry. The guy shooting arrows. RIP
The only reason like this song is when Macklemore raps. He killed the rap part (as usual) and anybody notice he was rapping faster than usual?
Hat about in cant hold us?
Why u no have good grammer???
Who directs Macklemore's videos I swear he has the dopest videos visuals ever all always mad props to whoever behind it !!
Mostly Ryan Lewis himself with some other people. Credits are normaly at the end of videos :)
Yoλv DeϨigns well in this case Ryan Lewis is the producer of the song as well
It was Jason Koenig. He's the one who does the videos. Always great, he received Best Cinematography award and others for "Can't Hold Us".
Eli Blankers He directed Ed Sheeran's Thinking out loud video as well.
this is art...
I was 16 when i heard about this. I used to ride my motorcycle to this song and jammed out on it - going to lakes with my friends - Best time in my life so far
As someone approaching 40 I can safely say those teenage and childhood memories are the best and you’ll measure a lot of moments to those perfect ones
Is it just me or Macklemore kinda looks like a Vin Diesel with hair?
Truee lol
Wait....SO TRUE !
It´s not true guys, he's so much beautiful than Vin Diesel 💘
lola lotymani much beautiful such pretty wow ^^
TheTryhardBeast12 with stupid haircut
I watched this live at Leeds festival on Friday, The crowd didn't know the words- but still people loved it!
Hai Chippy :D
I was there too, no one knew the song or the words or even who Chris was like I screamed really loud when fences came out and I felt like I was the only one 😂
Ella Murphy It felt like that with School Boy Q- kept hearing people chant 'School Boy Who?'
***** What kind of festival is this that they don't even know who Q is!? smh :P
Macklemore was very good at leeds fest and put on a really good performence
my GOD, this takes me BACK..the MEMORIES.. and the NOSTALGIA.. just.. DAMN..
Was studying in the library and suddenly remembered this song existed
This song reminds me of good old days. just me being teenager and worrying about nothing serious :)
I love raps with deep meanings.
jeffrey625625 twenty one pilots have very deep meanings
This is literally my favorite song. Mainly because of the Wes Anderson theme. I'm glad that I discovered Fences through Macklemore. Best artist ever. The song is pure awesomeness.
everyone seems to only be here or talk about macklemore but let's applaud fences for the fact he is an amazing lyricist and has such a unique voice and musical sound
This song is criminally underrated
This and Other Side are fantastic pieces. Fences is something different, but in the best possible way ever.
yes!
thought i was the only one :)
Well said John the legendary pussy destroyer...

i just randomly remembered this song and suddenly nostalgia came rushing, brings me back to the good times... also, i didn't even know how or why i know this song lol
Nobody can tell me that this song is already 4 years old.....
I'm happy about these type of rap songs. Indie rap style.
was reminded of my macklmore phase. I was in middle school at the time, this song was my absolute favorite. Can't believe I forgot about it. I'm in college now and want to be a story board artist. Was thinking about storyboarding music vids, and this one I remembered vividly but couldn't remember the song it went to. Literally feeling so nostalgic right now, thank u
Same here. Listening to macklemore's songs reminds me of very good memories of those times too.. they won't come back, dats why I miss them I guess lol
Wanted to comment about, how somoeone can forget about a song in that short period of time. Then i saw whem it was uploaded...
Fuck me, time flies
aint no way we lived the same life
Same thing happened to me, heard gold by macklemore the other day and was reminded by him
I also had a Macklemore phase in middle school and am now in college. This was my favorite song back then and I am rediscovering it once again:)
I don't know who "Ed Rose" is, but I like his song.
He's actually saying "arrows" don't know if ur trolling or not soz
Lol I know
Dude fr...i did think it said Ed Rows
I thought it was aunt rose
It says arrows but in two syllables seperately
Came for Macklemore, stayed for Fences !
2021 anyone?? 😍
The "arrows land, we're falling" part kinda sounds like "that girl is a real crowd pleaser" in Black Beatles. Even the key is the same.
i hope macklemore reads this comment, KEEP MAKING MUSIC YO!
If Wes Anderson directed a music video.
Nearly 2023 and still listening to this song 😭🔥
i miss macklemore too much good to hear his voice again :)
I definitely find Christopher one of the most interesting singers of current music. I'd love to speak to him and hear about his adventures, there definitely needs to be a video of him talking about his tattoos someday :)
IF I was in hospital this song was my sunsine in bad days
still my no 1 song of all time, been repeating this thousand times and still lovin it. Pure art
For the non-English, I wish I could hear a version where I don't know what the words are, too. The beauty of the voices, their dying falls on every note, from both singers... Gorgeous. Can we have a Spanish cover, please?
gosh i completely forgot about this song but i feel so nostalgic now...
I like the cinematography in this video
its symmetry and style is kinda like a wes anderson movie.
Turbodaxter if you like the cinematography watch moonrise kingdom its a good movie
*_people listen to music to dance, i listen to music to cry!_*
I love this song... And I hope someone noticed that "professor Macklemore" flyer at the start of the third verse :) good memories.
Yes I noticed the first time, and it makes me smile everytime I see it
Brilliant, I remember those good ol days
Aah i kinda forgot about this song but i'm glad i found it back, it's amazing
Yeah it feels so good to listen to an old music
Laura Prins I'll just comment on here so you can find the song again from this notification lol
evan denger ah thank you so much
Laura Prins yeah same here, it somehow got stuck in my head but i really forgot how it was called so it took me quite some time... but now i'm here and happy ^^
Hi Laura! I know more music like this if you're interested?
This needs to be on the radio .
How am I only discovering this song now? It wasn't on the fucking amazing Macklemoree album.
I think this guy got tattoos ! I saw one on his arm...
I saw it too
naah.. i think you're wrong. i re-watched it a couple of times and he deff doesn't have any tatts.
YoungFavorite Yea, he's just wearing a weird shirt or something.
YoungFavorite My bad... Sorry...
you have to look really close to see the tattoes
2:42 Look at that "Lost Cat" poster ! Is it Cairo ? awwww !
Yes:)
I want Macklemore to be Backlemore.
a wes anderson vibe going on
fucking totally! good call.
True
I got the same vibe.
was just about to comment the very same thing !!!
Solomon Wang I was going to say the same!
So Wes Anderson
Good call. Absolutely has Wes Anderson vibe. Especially Moonrise of the Kingdom
i can dig it though.
agreed 100000%. But i sooooo like it.
Wait wait wait, I just said this 4 minutes before you. No one liked it. Im salty
I dont mean to bitch about it, it just always happens. This will probably be the top comment. This is my life ._.
I can listen to this song a thousand times on repeat, the meaning is just too powerful.
What does it mean?
@@ablaylock4273 when you’re famous, it feels like you dodging arrows just trying to live a regular life, I’m pretty sure the arrows referred to paparazzi or unwanted attention
I remember, I played this several times during my review days in Manila for my licensure exam. I played it before and after I studied my lessons sa dorm. Take me back.
I can't describe it, but I always thought that the first half of this song sounds what love feels like.
Loved the part with Ben jumping into the pool that had his Rolling Stone covers floating in it. Great song, and great video!
the Rolling Stone covers in the pool was Ryan's idea :-)
Well it was genius so kudos to Ryan and the entire team
When this song was written, created and published Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Fences were all aware of the fact that not everyone would be able to grasp the meaning behind this song. Those who are able to see and understand the depth of this message expressed are the few whom were meant to understand it. However, those who do not follow the meaning were never meant to, those who say harsh words against it do so because they are unable to grasp the power and beauty. We all naturally attack that of which we don't fully understand. I personally find this to be incredibly deep and inspiring and I am excited to hear more of what's yet to come.
This video should of gotten REALLY popular, I'm surprised it didn't get more than 10 million views
Last year when I had Facebook I made my url "Fences" (Because I love Fences, the band) and I ended up deactivating because so many fans would add me just to complain that I "stole" the url. Bless the idiots, but praise Fences.
As you become famous you change and it kills you along with your previous art as your ideas change.
Toby Holland really?
Toby Holland hipster
True. Look at miley and then demi 😂😂
true...look at mack's new musical video smh
+Illuminati Leader fuck you mean? his vids are amazing as usual. every single vid cant have tons of symbolism packed into it. The vids have to go with the vibe of the music
Another 2014 banger
Probably the most underrated song ever.
I live this way , that's the way I am . I smoke, I drink and that's the way I am .and I believe in God and that it is by grace we can be saved.
Thumbs up if Macklemore brought you here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need some new stuff guys.. New music, New album.. I can't wait anymore
I LIVE THIS WAY
I LIVE THIS WAY
I LIVE THIS WAY
I LIVE THIS WAY.
I like the part where he says "I live this way"
Great Videography
For those who are confused about the story here, its about some dude named ed rose who is falling from a pool and he wishes he never painted that picture of the lion cause now his dad is trying to kill him with arrows
Obviously
Lmao

I think Macklemore and fences should do many more songs together because they are a great duo and this fucking song is the best I've heard in my life
only 7mill views... should be 7bill.
greenrolaids that would mean that literally everyone on the world, par a few poor mill, would have to watch this video. people in prison, on death sentence, in the middle of having a baby, interupting an important meeting, making the ambo late to the man bleeding out from a gun shot, making people miss their train and their wedding and god knows what else. you ever think about that? no. you only think about yourself.

This song is my current jam ( and it has been for a long time) too bad It didn't get the attention it deserves. :s
Over 6 million views, I'd say it did okay. I know, I know -those are Mack & Ryan's views, not Fences. Duh!
This will be 10 years old this year?! Wow.
Don't you feel like something is missing from this video ? BEN'S FANNYPACK !
But seriously , Ryan should be in the video too xD
I guess he's in it. look at 2:41 ;)
itskiaara
there is ;D
itskiaara ok ... I'm talking more than just a second lol xD
ByOtilia I think so too. It is quite strange that Macklemore plays the most important role and has more personal signs in the video for Fences. Ryan is Bens best friend and he simply had to appear on the screen for longer time.
Sorry for my English, I am russian :D
K Voloshin
They are both helping Fences and Ryan recognizes that it's Macklemore's name and image which will help the most- the rest of the spotlight being on Fences. Ryan is doing the smart thing.
This was my favorite song when I was 14, now I’m 18 and damnnn, this song its just perfect
This song is my 2014 august, I used to listen to it non-stop !
Fences's part gives me life.

this song is about life and its hard sometimes, love this song.
This reminds me of Canada..the wood cutting, plaid, little shack house thing, and the deer xD
Such an incredible song, mad respect for Fences because it is his song, not Macklemores. Macklemore's one was otherside which also featured fences but yeah this is a bloody great song
