- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has encouraged Ukraine to agree to a cease-fire with Russia, as he made his first visit to the country since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Orban is seen as one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies in the European Union and he has repeatedly tried to slow and block support for Ukraine within the bloc.
The Hungarian leader's visit came after he took over the rotating EU presidency on Monday.

Viktor Orbans proposal is no different from the Chinese proposal, to start a cease fire to start peace negociations. This means that the aggression of Putin would become a frozen conflict and that Russia will consolidate his positions in the mean time in the occupied eastern parts of Ukraine. There can be no peace talks unless Putin withdraws his army and then we will start talking about restoration and all of the damage he has done to an independant country. Would any other Eastern country which could face the same fate such as Poland, the Baltics agree to get demolished and bombed for the wishes of a nut case in the Kremlin who want parts of Europe and then say : thank you very much , now we will start to negociate about peace ?

Orban's position is the same from day 0. Even the US general told the Ukranians earlier to negotiate for peace right after they've had a successful counter push. Dont push even more: settle for what you've managed to get back. Actually now (2024.07.23) the russians are making small but steady gains. Stopping that forward movement for a fixed time (1-2 weeks) would be just as helpful for the ukranians as the russians. Problem is: neither side wants to negotiate while they feel they have the momentum on their side. Other question is purely material: how much money each taxpayer is willing to get out of their pocket within the EU and US to fund a war on a non-allied random country's territory? Looking at elections results my guess is: not a majority of taxpayers want their money to be literrally blown up and burnt in war. This war is the complete breakdown and failure of diplomacy. Return back to professional diplomacy and negotiations that can end the war.
Russia attacked Ukraine because they put into their constitution to join to NATO and got weapons from US, which was a real security danger for Russia. Russia wants to have a buffer zone between their territory and NATO countries, that is understandable. Even if I do not like Russian political system the security interest of the biggest nuclear power must be respected.
