    This is one of the BEST demos I've seen so far for this synth. Mark shows off the uniqueness of this keyboard greatly. I'm so sick and tired of all the demos that take half time if not more showing the piano sounds...For crying out loud !!! EVERY MODERN KEYBOARD HAS GREAT PIANO SOUNDS, even a $300 Casio. Only thing missing IMO is a keyboard long Ribbon Controller like on the super famous Yamaha CS-80?

      I've even experienced the opposit... videos that DISMISS the piano sound as unusable!!
      This is the first one that showed the SUPENATURAL Piano in a beautiful piece of music... sounded GREAT!
      FOR ME, a workstation, like the MPC, is a time saving IDEA MACHINE, so I STILL will finish my stuff in the DAW

      Everything is overkill on a stage, which is what Fantom-0 is meant for. SuperNatural pianos unusuable? In a studio, arguably, but not live. But hey, there are producers still using those f***ing hideous M1 pianos in new age and ambient tracks and what not, so it is all relative.

    The zen core engine is tops and the super natural engine is amazing. Analog emulation is as good as it gets. The older F series is good but they don’t have zen core, nor do they sample. This is a welcome keyboard as the top of the line Fantoms are a bit too expensive for most.

    Agree, the FantomO is the best Roland (menu) OS yet (I own the O6). But I would have bought a Fantom8 if it only came as an 88 (synth or piano action) with full subtractive synth controls it would be like the Fantom controls, but an entire section of the panel real estate filled with controls like the Gaia, sliders, buttons and knobs for all functions. We would still have the menu for more deeper design. The 88 has the panel space for this to be a reality and the first synth of its kind with this much panel control. And I would have bought a JupiterX if it had front panel controls for all 4 parts (partials) editing of the Roland 4partial architecture would have been a dream come true. It would have been a JupiterX with 4 times the panel, or in other words all the panel controls on the JupiterX currently times 4, Much like the Yamaha CS80 controls. I also own a Roland E-A7 a synth arranger with the little 61 note keyboard loaded with controls filling the panel completely, every spot on that panel is used :) it is a wonderful synth to use. So it is possible and economically feasible to fill these synths with tactile control, Roland should be the first to do this, especially since it is their 4partial architecture that in 30 years we have never had full access to except by menu. For the price of the Fanom8 and the JupiterX I am expecting this today, or someday...dreaming?

      Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. There's a few things but I'll try to make a comparison chart but briefly in addition to what you've mentioned:- no CV-Gate, no analogue filter (the modelled ones are brilliant though) smaller multi sample and "sample to keys" memory, less area for expansions, less ins and outs on the rear panel.

    • @cds8137
      @cds8137 Před 2 lety +4

      Hi, I too was looking for the differences and this video really highlights the Fantom O. Key differences I have found are as follows... 1/ No After touch keyboard, and 2/ it's not the Fatar premium keyboard as on the Fantom. 3/ Half the processing power as only 2 onboard chips vs 4 chips on the Fantom. 4/ Xyzme wavetable expansion not available on the O (needs extra processing power). 5/ The Jupiter/Juno 106/JX3P/SH101 expansions are not free on the O like they are on the Fantom and cost £149 each. 6/ 8GB Multisamples on the Fantom vs 2GB on the O. 7/ No V piano available on the O - I think this is a processor power issue on the O. 8/ No analogue filter on the O and 9/some of the extra sliders and 10/pots are missing. 11/ Sound library is not the same on the O. 12/ Plastic vs metal chassis build. But this makes the O much lighter. 13/ The I/O is less on the O vs Fantom eg. The XLR Combi connections are missing on the O and other connections. 14/ The O styling is different and feels like the FA in my opinion and a little plasticky, however that is a personal opinion and better to demo one in a shop. 15/ The fader/ pot lighting and some zoning is missing on the O and does not show the original fader lighting for the original settings and changes. 16/ No CV gate. I have probably missed some elements but I hope this helps.

    This looks like a fantastic board and all around something I'd really go for, but for all the praising of the new SN pianos in the different demos, it seems like they lack any kind of resonance from the damper or cabinet like the SN pianos have in all of Roland's other SN products. Am I wrong about this?

    • @MarkWatson1
      @MarkWatson1  Před 2 lety

      The new SuperNATURAL Pianos definitely have a resonance that is noticeable and in fact I prefer them. They are wider, warmer and more organic.

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith Před rokem

      You're correct. A lot of the resonance and sympathetic features were lost, primarily due to the demand of Zencore. Keeping it workable in a cheaper priced board is taxing on the electronics and certain things had to be cut. Technically FA is a far better unit (for it's time). 0 series is fine but with many sacrifices. Personally I'd wait for an updated generation of the board; if only for the Poly shortfall. I assume you aren't Japanese; so I could perhaps suggest viewing Darrick Keels channel. He covers some of this in his evaluation of them.

      @@theverysinfulcaterpillar5788 Personally I like the PHA-50. The VP is more than serviceable for stage piano performance and layering, considering it has dedicated BMC. Anyone looking for a studio option has a wall of different choices but it has been some time since 2019.
      Preferences being what they are workstation scale boards aren’t everyone’s thing. The FA always did sell best, just as Yamaha will shift 100 times the number of Modx and stage keys over the flagships.
      Considering the versatility of Fantom it’s not going to slow most people down in a combination performance situation. And the majority of people I meet are in that category (they don’t perform alone). I just prefer to go to the flagship for best performance in the model range. Which full Fantom obviously is.

      @theverysinfulcaterpillar5788 Před rokem

      @@ErraticFaith I think the PHA50 is great and makes me glad to have it. The VPianos to me are generally pretty bad and as much as I prefer the resonances and other subtleties they offer I think the best sounding pianos are easily the ones from the second SN pack. For home use I've actually hooked it up to my 700NX and play the SN pianos on that through the PHA50 which is really the best of both worlds other than the second large keyboard needing to be there. Overall I'm happy with the Fantom but think its pianos are easily its weakest point.

      76 usually is broad enough to not have to mess with octave shifting, if you don’t care about weighted keys. If you don’t care about weighted keys and don’t care about occasionally hitting an octave shift button, then the 06 would be fine.

    Still hoping Roland uses a 9 or 10 inch screen on their next Fantom. Selecting and muting parts of the pattern sequencer is frustrating for men like me who are big with big hands. Even with Ed Diaz in the Roland tutorials of this synth he is having a huge problem selecting the little boxes. I bought my first keyboard with a 9 inch display, it is incredible to use, a Medeli AK -X10, too bad the Medeli is not a playable instrument, keyboard is not controllable for wide range velocity instruments.

    Which synthesizer is worth buying Roland Fa or Fantom 0

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith Před rokem

      It will depend on a number of things. Mostly personal. If you're looking for a live performance keyboard, with a linear sequencer and the better SN resonance/sampling. A overall thicker sound ideal for the stage/mix then FA is unrivalled I believe. It's the most popular performance board here for a reason.
      The Fantom-0 is an entirely different device. I see it as a introduction/general purpose Zencore platform. The unit is a jack-of-all as they call it in the west. Can be fit into numerous roles. However, much like the flagship Fantom it can hit polyphony walls - and this becomes problematic if you are mainly looking to embrace the technology itself, for a home/studio usage. Simply put the unit will struggle with the power of its own engine. For me, I see that as a limitation - because I have a comprehensive set of alternatives at home; without those limits. The larger Flagship Fantom actually has some of the same issues at times; but it's advantage lies in it's wider amount BMC. Thus things like the V-Piano and N/Zyme become possible. For me, these are the real winners of the Fantom range and a real loss for the little brother 0.
      Your usage may differ entirely and you may not notice these shortfallings as much. In which case you'll benefit from a more fully featured hands on experience, UI/modern screen and a still fairly powerful engine on the 0. Everything has it's drawbacks. There is a reason some will be sticking with the FA. Thats all you should bare in mind.

    Disagree on using SN tones for orchestral professional work, while these tones are certainly viable for composing and orchestrating, they are awful compared to any orchestra filled with polished musicians. The sound, and skill of acoustic instruments played by a pro cannot be recorded or simulated on a keyboard. Orchestrating on synths for recording a symphony score is a terrible sound that cannot be sold. So for the last 20 years been using synths to design my own instruments and then orchestrate. Each sound design of all the synths orchestrated is done for each song, so that each song has a group of instruments made just for the song. Song creation with its own instrument creation is truly a creative wonder.
