I wrote my own Skyport called Barak Thaig who are a subport of Barak Thryng. Their leaders are very traditional and interested in acquiring old artefacts from before the age of Chaos. Because these are also worth a lot, they attract a lot of low level arkanauts from other ports who haven't been able to strike it rich in a traditional way, and so now are resorting to the dangerous dungeon delving of Barak Thaig. In addition, they have various other Duardin who make up a solid chunk of the expeditions, Dispossessed who also have connections to the holds they're exploring and even some spirits of the ancestors (ghostly longbeards) appear to help them fight whatever menace destroyed or defiled the old holds.

I think the change of 'dwarf' to 'duardin,' and the other species name changes, has a lot more significance than just being able to trademark it. Part of it has to do with just having names for things that aren't confused with others. Just as an example, before 2015, GW was making three different varieties of orc (space orks, fantasy orcs, and Middle-Earth Orcs tm). This a marketing thing, for sure, but it's understandable since so many games have dwarves, elves, orcs, etc, and they want to make theirs unique. Also, it helps separate the AoS line from the Fantasy/Old World line, which I think will only become more stark as time goes on.

    • @YOGI-kb9tg

It is totally 100% trademark and not mixing up names. The duradin is the only name I feel they flopped on. The other races sound like there common fantasy names when you sound them out but duradin sounds nothing like dwarfs.

I feel like gw missed a trick with the duardin. You've got three factions, two of them themed round duardin gods (ko get the artisan god, Grungni, fyre get slayer god, Grimnir).
There was a third diety, the goddess Valaya of home and hearth. I don't know what happened to her in endtimes, but she would be a perfect diety for the Dispossessed, rather than just sigmar.

I'm not sure if they'll have to fight. You see during the feast of the Ghuzfest (duration: 1 week, food: liquid bread) the vostarg lodge extended a friendly hand to their dispossessed cousins and even a Kharadron skyfleet (not mentioned which) and they basically got drunk together. What happened after, is that Runeson Rolth accidentally divulged the truth of ur-gold and Grimnir. To their surprise, the other duardin supported the fyreslayers and this led to the birth of the duardrazhal, the common dwarven tongue.
There is only a tiny blurb on it in the Fyreslayers tome.

Neat. I imagine that relations depend highly on the Lodges, Ports, and Holds/Cities involved though. Cause we know that Barak Thyng absolutely gets along with Dispossessed and Fyreslayers, whereas a more radical port probably has shakier relationships.

My lore is still developing but essentially my Warden King wants to make a true home for Duradin like the age of myth and goes about setting up an expedition with those that would follow him and hire a clan of KO to both aid and trade once it's established. While planning out where to settle a Fyreslayer battlesmith tells them about how his lodge's homeland was taken over by night haunt in the necroquake causing them to retreat after losing everything. The lodge offers the mountain they called home in exchange for the urgold still in their vaults and vengeance for all those lost. Thus the Anvilmar Expedition was formed to travel the ashen wastes into the middle of Bloodbound territory. Still working on it all but I love all the dwarves in this game I couldn't keep to just one.

The innovative takes on the classic dwarven trope are what dragged me into AoS (notably KO).
A lot of settings just copy-paste tolkien's dwarves, but AoS created the most unique duardin cultures I've ever seen. I can't wait to see how GW will build upon those unique foundations and factions.
The big thing I want to see however is more female duardins. Bring back Valaya and make some female duardin models. As a massive dwarf fan, the lack of female presence always felt like it reduced the depth of dwarf society... it's often formulated as a silly joke about them not existing and what-not.
I'm so glad Code of the Skies and Soulbound put their foot down and added female duardins.
