- Dave Mellor’s dream job as the groundskeeper for his beloved Red Sox at Fenway Park wasn’t enough to wipe away the mental and physical pain from being struck by a car twice when he was younger. Tom Rinaldi reports how with the help of a service dog named Drago, Mellor has been able to cope with the post traumatic stress disorder he has been dealing with for most of his adult life.

Jacob Zendejas except service dogs don’t attack...
Caitlin and Dakota you beat me to saying that
Ya
I'm not the biggest Red Sox fan, but if they win can they please get Drago a World Series Collar? (instead of ring)
That would be AWESOME! 😆

Tanner Unger DID HE GET THE COLLAR THO

this is the type of reporting we wanna see espn great work
They'd easily keep millions of subscribers if they kept coming out with good content like this instead of rehashed sportscenter every 5min
Austin Wirl espn is for sports not dogs dumbass
@@justinbrown5044 pretty sure he meant instead of the bullshit political stuff they've shifted to...dumbass
What, how people abuse the ADA and use so called service dogs?
I started crying when he whispered in Drago’s ear “I love you”😭 beautiful story.Shows how important Animals are in general for people’s long-term recovery from PTSD.
'Sometimes I wish I die before Drogo does'
Ooff, that got a tear rolling down my cheek
This guy has to have some of the worst luck possible, getting hit by a car twice in his life. He and that beautiful dog definitely deserve one another.
And the second time, it was some Happy Gilmore stuff! On the field!
Or lucky 🍀 😎🙏☝️
It was all the gods dad's a beat yeah you could look a hip acharis twice is bed bug but look at the beautiful family it is life path
@@jamessveinsson6006 WTF!? What language are you speaking!?
True story one of my closest friends was been hit by a car 3 times in 4 years. Somehow walked away without anything broke each time

I’m an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and I too have a service dog, it is unbelievable what this dogs can do. Unconditional love and companionship that that many times is unmatched. God bless
Eliezer Bonilla thank you so much for your service sir! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank You for your Service and God Bless!
Thank you for your service 👏
Thank you all
Thank you for your service.
I saw Drago out on the field for game 1 against Houston. Go Sox and go Drago and Dave! Amazing story
Lyndsey Anderson that’s so cool!
If Drago is the team dog....he needs a number
I got a springer spaniel two months before being injured in service. After several unsuccessful surgeries I was told I’m being medically discharged as I can’t serve as a paratrooper anymore after 15years. I lost the job I loved , I was in debt, in pain, had no where to live . And one night I had enough and thought of taking the easy way out... sensing this my dog got out his bed, got his fave toy and sat in my lap with a look in his eye that said he didn’t care how much money I had in the bank, what job I done or where we lived as I had him .... but he needed me.
And with that he literally saved my life and I promised to give him the best life I could .
He’s nine now, I’m still having surgery, still in pain etc but it don’t matter cos I got the best dog/friend anyone can ask for. I’m not religious but if there is a creator then when his time is up then he defo deserves a place in heaven and to be by his side at the top table.
Yes, dogs can feel when you are in intense distress and pain. Great dog that you have there. Continue with the surgery and hopefully the pain will become more manageable. We all have more life to give, we just have to do something to make it happen and not wait for it. There are jobs/activities where even if YOU cannot physically be a paratrooper , you can still work around the industry. Brainstorm what you can do where you can still be around this job and help out in the job that you love.
You got a partner right there
Adorable!
In my faith animals DEFINITELY have a great place in heaven! :-)
I am sorry man. I hope you'll feel better soon, i sincerely do. All the best
Im a die hard Yankees fan but this story hit me hard 😭
NYRF DeadPool Jr. Good because it has nothing to do about Sox or Yankees

God damn it trying to make me cry ESPN! dogs are so special.
It worked.
Same, it worked
Y u say God name in VAIN Shame on you
Dave, having had several shepherds over my lifetime, I can assure you that Drago would never want to live longer than you....
The players fawning over Drago melted my heart. I'm sure it's a big stress reliever for everyone to have a dog around.
Now that's mans best friend ❤
It's sad 55 people disliked this video as someone who received my PTSD shortly after being hit by a Ford F150 while in a crosswalk and nearly losing my life I understand what it's like, we all need to stand up for people with mental illness because one day you can get it.
Service dogs are amazing and they come in all different shapes and sizes.
My service dog is hands down the reason I’m here today at this moment.
She’s the best friend I could have ever if asked for
Tears are rolling down my face...Shepherds are the BEST dogs EVER! May he continue to protect and love you for all your days :-)
Why does the beginning sound like a beginning of a 90s movie
Great story. Hope Dave has many more happy years with Drago. Ian Kinsler is a good dude.
I cried at the beginning and again at the end. I love when Tom Rinaldi does these stories.
I know PTSD and have my pawprint on the top of my right foot. I loved that dog.
Dogs are like angels that are here for a 1/8 of our lives and then gone forever. But they leave such an impression on us :,)
there is no crying in baseball, there is no crying in baseball, there is no...aw damn give me a tissue
LOL! That's too funny.
Rest In Peace, Drago.
im not crying, your crying. Who is cutting the onions. this hit me in the Feels. I rescued my GSD who was days from being put down. I had just gotten divorced and was feeling down. I went to look at dogs at the local shelter, not thinking i would adopt one. It was just to get out and play with some pups. Well this 100lb gentle giant stole my heart as soon as our eyes met. The shelter warned me about his issues he had and i experienced none of them and he has been the best snuggle buddy when i need a pick me up. I would not trade him for the world. At the end when he talked about knowing he would outlive his doggo and sometimes wished he would die 1st. My god i feel the same way sometimes. Buddy is now 10 and thats getting up there for GSD's. I know i only have a few years left and i am so greatfull for the time we have and especially the 1st 2. He is my rock. This video has inspired and touched me. When buddy passes into the great green pasture with all the rabbits and squirrels to chase i am also getting a paw tattoo on my heart. i need to get some snuggles in.
Fantastic story 💕 And Sox you're the best for allowing him to incorporate his dog into his work!!! 👍⚾️
No they aren't, they're just doing the bare minimum legal requirement. It shouldn't be amazing that an employer follows the law and doesn't discriminate against service dog handlers. This should be normal, maybe one day it will be. But for now, it's hard for a SD handler to get and keep a job because of illegal but rampant discrimination :/
Go sox killed them dodgers
The tattoo discussion.. I can tell you from experience. I did the exact same thing. When my pup passed I got a mural of her on my forearm where she would always sleep. I found out aswell if you get them cremated, you can get their ashes added to your tattoo.. Its hard to deal with but it helps, atleast it helped me. Being able to look down and see her face whenever I need that little pick me up
We lost my brother to a car on pedestrian accident. I wasn’t even there and I struggled for years just crossing the street without being terrified. I’m so happy for this man and all he’s overcome.
Dogs, once again proving that they are our best friends.
As a dog lover and a sox fan! This is prbbly the best I will ever see
Wonderful story! Anyone that's ever had a special dog understands the profound impact they have on your life and how they embed themselves in your heart forever.
I’m not crying…
my eyes are just sweating
“While we all move along our own path, none of us wants to walk alone. We seek a friend and a partner to share the share the trail and maybe ease the way.” Perfect starting line by Tom Rinaldi
the connection between dogs and humans are beautiful. congrats to the red soxs on the world series
God bless this man. And his little pup. And his daughters. And his wife. God bless them.
Omg. Can’t stop the tears. What a great story! It’s not about team that you play for it’s about love, unconditional.
Man I’m crying in the club right now
Dogs are amazing and can do so many amazing jobs. We raised seeing eye dogs, and were blessed to see them go in to a life of service. Great story!
"Paw print on my heart" that destroyed me.
Yes yes yes.
My dog is just my side kick. We love our sister dog. So much. They are just always there for you.
Always.
Drago helps the entire team as well. Great pup
So glad Dave has Drago in his life, the bond they have is unbreakable.
I have PTSD and rescued a male GSD, what a difference a dog can make in your life when you have this disorder.
All the best to Dave and Drago and the puppy who will by now be an adult!
Great story. I’m sorry about your accident. Life can be like that. So glad you found a friend to help you. And he’s such a beauty. Animals are a gift from God. Great story. Love it.
Rain delay....oops it's just my eyes. Beautiful story.
I know it’s only been a day but this is an underrated comment
It brought tears to my eyes, especially when he said " He has no Tattoos, but if Drago goes before him " , he'll have a Tattoo on his Heart of his Footprint.
The ten people who disliked this get a express ticket to hell
Grow up and deal with your problems like a man. We all would have to love crutches but your crutch is annoyance when the person on the plane sitting next to me has to have a german shepard with him. Your PTSD causes other people CTSD - that's current traumatic stress. The rest of don't need to have traumatic stress from fear of being bitten (yes I have - by "service" dogs), dog's sitting next to me farting, smelling, drooling, shedding hair, and yes peeing and defecating. Keeping dogs in human places is inhumane to dogs and people. Unfortunately most dog owners think everyone should love listening to their cut little pooch yelping, barking, growling - because their self centered selfish people.
yeah thats kinda odd is cats maybe ?
P Pumpkin unfortunately all the dogs you seem to have had experiences with were fake, untrained service dogs. A real service dog handler will never have a dog that’s barking unless for a task such as calling for help, and certainly never growling as the ADA law itself states a service dog should never show any form of aggression. If a real service dog makes noise it is because something is quite wrong and the dog and handler need help. As for soiling places, it is also written in ADA law that a if a dog is not house trained it shall not be allowed public access, as urinating and defecating indoors is a health hazard. The same goes for the shedding. In order to be brought into public, service dogs are groomed far more rigorously than pet dogs are. Even long-haired breeds get cared for to the point they’re not leaving clumps of fur everywhere they lay, and no more bacteria is getting tracked in by their paws than by your own shoes. I guarantee my dog’s paws are cleaner than the bottoms of your shoes. I clean them and care for them more often than I wash my own hands so she’s not tracking mud into stores. I’ve left her home before when she’s not having a good day of behavior because I understand how important it is that service dogs behave properly in public. It’s impacted my health to have to do that because I wouldn’t have her if I wasn’t legally disabled (I can’t even work due to how disabling my ailments are and my medical team agrees with me not working) but it makes my disability worse if she’s unable to behave and focus and perform her tasks.
I’m sorry that you have only dealt with pet owners who think throwing a vest on an untrained dog gives them the right to have the dog in places where pets are not allowed, and that you’ve even had the experience of being bitten by one such untrained animal, but real service dogs will never behave like that and if you see that behavior you have the right and responsibility of reporting that behavior to management and from there they can ask for the dog to be removed, and if the owner refuses to remove their disruptive and dangerous pet the cops may be called by management as they are in violation of the law and can be charged with a hefty fine and community service which if they do not pay they can then serve time in jail.
Service dogs as defined by law are far better behaved than what you described and anything resembling what you described should never ever be out in public.
98 dislikes are from cat people
How can 63 people dislike this beautiful story. 😢
You gotta have a heart of stone to feel nothing
Crying was not what I wanted to do this morning but here I am crying and wishing everyone had the love a Drago
My dog is everything to my PTSD. God bless you sir.
Bro i wasn’t ready to cry today
That introduction by Tom Rinaldi is perfect!!!!!!
Dogs 🐕 are the best, that’s why they are our best friends
The best dogs ♥️ Mine was with me through the toughest times from age 5-18. Miss her every day.
Beautiful story, the bond between animals and humans always touches me so much.
"Goodest boy helps lawn dude be happy. Makes 5 more goodest boys." The only news we need.
That’s the sad thing about dogs
They always go before us 😢 so u have to eventually live in without them
Heroes get remembered but Legends never die
The last minute really got to me... actual tears
Every team should have a dog
Just made me cry thinking how inspirational this video was and reminding me of my past it's really remarkable to see someone like him go through something that he did and be able to share that story with the world.
That made me cry a little at the end ):
Wow he said I hope I die before he does 😭 that’s what you call love
Is there anything except greatness with this FABULOUS breed!!! 👍👍🦴🦴🦴❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A truly wonderful story. And yes, crying is allowed in baseball. This is the type of reporting (with a sports bent) that ESPN should be talking about more often, please. What a beautiful story, good job.
The Red Sox are a first class organization. This is awesome and that dog is a great story and seems like a good thing for the club. Let’s win the ALCS!
I’m not a Red Sox fan, but this is so sweet. 🐾
I know exactly where he's coming from. My German Shepherd, Thunder, died of cancer last year at the age of 14. It ripped my heart out. I don't have kids, but he was like my son and my best friend. His death was a terrible time for me, but I would never trade the time I got to spend with him. He brought me immeasurable joy, laughter, comfort, and friendship. I will love him and miss him always.
You sly old Drago, life Companion, and proud papa! Beautiful gift and report.
From a Trojan to an Indian, I am glad you are where you are Dave, you make Ohio, and Miami county proud.
This story made my heart smile. I was in a car accident 10 years ago & got my fur daughter Phaydra in 2012.. She’s not exactly trained for everything only whatever I’ve trained her for but she’s my keeper & knows when I’m gonna have a bad day. We walk everyday on leash only bc of laws but she’s is very protective over me. She loves attention from other animals & humans alike. She knows if someone’s sugar is too high or too low, my husband had diabetes. My mom has seizures & lives 700 miles away but got a boy version of my girl so I help train my mom on how to train her puppers to help her “episodes”. Oh my Phay is a boxer mix but looks like a tan pit bull. People should hate on the supposedly scary breeds bc they are so smart & just need training & lots of toys bc they have massive jaws that love to tear stuff up.
I love dogs. They are never with us long enough tho. 10-15 yrs is not long enough and it hurts so much each time u loose another one.
BRO IM DONE😫😫😫 DRAGO THE GOODEST BOI
What a good lil man. :'(
I'm not crying, there's just a bunch of onions in this room
Nothing more loving and devoted

My favorite breed. Beautiful story
Animals heal our spirit and that is priceless
It's funny how of all the creatures big and small, it's often the smallest creatures that save the mighty humans. I love how dogs make people better people.
watching this with my canine next to me, the real mvp
Thank you espn for making me tear up at 2a.m
What an amazing, touching story between Dave and his beloved dog, Drago. Thank you!!!
I'm crying like a baby! Great story.

Fuck I actually cried this is really touching
How do people thumbs down a video like this? What a great and inspiring story. Thanks Dave and ESPN for sharing this
This is what I can't explain to people how some love dogs. Its such pure love.
Mans best friend.
Dogs make us better human beings. They have the ability to love unconditionally in a way that a person can't.
Beautiful story! Dogs can really help you. ❤ Lets go Red Sox.
Your dogs amazing Dave Mellor! My hats off to you and your dog and your family. Makes me miss my little dogs too!
As a Cubs fan, I am crying. Drago deserves a team number. These are the sports stories that need more attention.
