    When my grandpa passed away he gave me some money. It right burned a hole in my pocket and my old K55K was getting thin in the gumb line. So I got a 940-2 for $139.95.
    Best money I ever spent on a lock blade knife. And it fits well in my coveralls, so its easy to snatch when I need it.
    Man I wish I had another K55K though. That knife was as slim as a knife could get, had a pretty good German steel that took an edge quick and held it long enough for this working man's taste. I just wish this lock back design was on the K55K with maybe some upgraded steel and a lanyard hole instead of a bail.
    Yep for $40 you just can't beat those knives even if you tried you can't for the money.
    I bet I could sell this 940-2 and buy 4 of my K55K knives. Hand 3 out to show people what a real knife is for the pocket.
    I tried all these over the years. And the K55K Otter keeps coming back to my pocket.

    Thank you so much! I'm brand new to hand sharpening and I think this video is going to help me iron out a few kinks I was having! I've gotten my kitchen knives shaving sharp but just tried sharpening smaller folders a few days ago (for the first time) and was finding them a bit more difficult.     you can also run your edge through a wine cork to remove any burr you have.

      Why guess at edge angle with stones ? When we have all of the best sharpening systems available? I appreciate your skills but ,I'll stick to my Viper sharp system.

    Since all Benchmades are hand sharpened on belt grinders the angle per blade really varies, they are usually in the 15-25 degree per side range.

    Kyle on your finish strip you can use some high grit sandpaper and smooth it back out

    Kyle!
    I used my 1000 grid stone and with your techniq got my knife razor sharp.
    then switched to my 6000 grid site. knife became dull 😳.
    Then i looked at my 6000 grid stone, its not flat! thats the prob.
    I did everything from scratch (corrected for the 6000 grid stone) and got my knife razor sharp for the very 1 time. still allot to practice because my knife grind is not even.

      Hey Rene, glad you're practicing on the stones! What you explained, I experienced as well when I began. I would get a great edge on a 1000, but then I would always spoil my edge on the 6000. I believe it comes from a lack of controlling the angle, and perhaps even 'over-honing'. That is, honing much longer than you need to, stressing steel at the apex of the knife. This is on a microscopic level of course.

    Id highly recommend taping over the handle to keep slag out of the axis lock and taking the thumb studs off before you try to Sharpen it, they really get in the way

    Man ur good at holding your angles on the stone. Experience is invaluable eh...just bought stones and made a strop but so far just playin wit my less expensive cutters.

    If you use the belt sander for emergencies. Diamond plates!
    Take a look at the dmt diamond plates. It’s a “whetstone”. I am sure diasharp makes great diamond plates too.
    I use it to reprofile or fix chips and dents. Also it Lapps all my stones dead flat.
    A slip on the belt can become unfortunate and yet the diamond plate wears metal away crazy fast but much slower than belts.

    For whatever this is worth, this was probably one of the most helpful sharpening videos on how to free hand. I currently use a KME along with about seven different drops from Jende depending on the edge I want. But I cant freehand sharpen for the life of me. The whole "shadow" thing really brought it down to the beginner level for me. Thank you sir!

    Thanks for the video ; for what it's worth, I fully support the "3 fingers" method as described.
    Wrt stones, did you try Arkansas stones ? I personally prefer (local European) natural stones which I find more resilient.

    Is the amount of pressure on the forward stroke the same as the backward stroke?

    I have a 940 with s30v and it’s as dull as a butter knife from the factory. I have spent at least 2 hours trying to put on an edge. It’s a little sharper but no near cutting paper with a clean cut. My conclusion is that super steels are nice to brag about but not user friendly. I would pick VG10 any day, at least you can put an edge back on it with a little touch up!

    So you dont need diamond or ceramic to sharpen s30v ? Im sorry but im new to super steels and on some forums they say water stones just dont cut it. If anyone can fill me in on some of this i would be grateful.

      Hey Jake, thanks for commenting. You absolutely DO NOT need diamond or ceramic stones for s30V. A good synthetic stone like this is more than capable!

      @@kyle_noseworthy hey man thanks for responding i really enjoy your channel, i have one more question, this may seem strange or unconventional but with many of my knives pocket and woods knives i like to use a traditional honing steel like the chefs type just to straighten my edges up i found it makes the edges last a very very long time. Would i be able to do this with benchmades s30v? Thanks a lot im kinda on the fence with this knife and any information would be greatly appreciated.

      @@wis1024 as Kyle mentioned the grit stages of whetstones would be superior to diamond and honing steel. The honing steels especially will simply remove too much material.

    i know....have 3-4-5 Great (Japans) stones are Super good...BUT_____The backside of a old porcelain plate (or a $15 DC4) is everything you really need for 90% of ALL knifes. {not speaking about profiling...maintenance ))

      I have many different stones. Oil stones, natural, water stone synthetics, etc. I would start with a combination stone of some sort. Woodstock 1000/6000 is a great choice!

      Newfoundland. 80-85% of Newfoundland's English heritage comes from the West Country (Bristol etc.) plus some of it's dialects have Irish influence thrown in.
