  • Legendary Bout is the series of solo character challenge that is automatically set to hard mode for all 7 main playable characters. No items are allowed and there are 5 waves each with different enemies.
I love Cait Sith in this game, so I figure I would upload his challenge.
    Time stamp:
00:00 Wave 1 Grangalan (Russian dolls)
    00:42 Wave 2 - Gi Archer + Lancer
    01:37 Wave 3 - Reapertail
    02:48 Wave 4 - Survite Disgorgon
    06:04 Wave 5 - Mindflayer
    08:10 Equipment and Materia
    Note:
I haven't been to hard mode yet. I am merely doing character challenges in advance for those manuscripts for additional SPs. My Cait Sith does not even have reprieve from his folio.
Things can go south incredibly fast in these challenges. Enemy damage output is quite insane and sometimes stunlocks you.
    Regarding Cait Sith:
Cait is quite unique in this game. He can go alone, attack on top of his moogle or be separated from the moogle doing his own thing. There are some notable things that I can think of:
    1. Cait on moogle has more i-frames. For example, you can perfect block both of reapertail's claw hits on the moogle by holding the button down. If he is on the ground by himself though, the second hit would register as a normal block.
    2. Cait on the moogle can do a sidestep (the spin)
    3. If you get a big hit on the moogle, Cait would fall off and take some time to get back up.
    4. Charge the unique ability gauge by separating from the moogle and let it attack on its own, or get on it and tap the attack button in melee range.
    5. Cait Sith is the only one with a party crit buff.
    6. Dodge and Dive unsummons the moogle, but it refunds most of the ATB used if dodged correctly.
    General idea:
Precision Defence does stagger damage with perfect guard. Using Plasma Discharge from enemy skill combined with Steadfast block (thus blocking leads to ATB charge) does even more stagger damage.
Once staggered, use Moogle Knuckle to increase damage bonus, then throw some Fortune Telling for damage. Rank 3 unique ability also has a VERY high damage multiplier, throw those in as well. Only wave 4 is immune to stop, so if you get a stop strike, you can use it to stop the stagger bar from falling. That or you can use a time materia instead of barrier (that is for safety).
    For individual battles:
    Wave 1:
Just use Fortune Telling and punch through them. You can even hit the ones at the back since the moogle move backwards before punching.
    Wave 2:
This is actually quite an annoying wave. The Gi archer often shoots you when you get on top of the moogle. I am not sure if this is a bug or what, sometimes you can perfect guard the Gi Lancer's Skewer and still take full damage (~1700). Taking one hit from each is enough to knock you off the moogle and get stunlocked. I sometimes try to go forward and bait the first set of attack before calling the moogle. The archer has other annoying attacks, so I just chose to take care of it first.
    Wave 3:
This boss is the reason why I used Fire and Ice with elemental materia. You pressure the boss with ice, but when it gets pressured and encases its tail with ice, you need fire to quickly stagger it. When its tail is encased with ice, its attacks will start throwing blizzard shards everywhere. You can deal with its attacks like this:
    1. Attacking with both claws is safe to guard. It throws the shard further away to catch dodge spams.
    2. Attacking with each claw usually throws the shard at right where you are. You can either guard again or do a moogle spin to the side. If you don't go back to mid though, it will use a side swipe next.
    3. For the side swipe, I usually block the first hit and get off the moogle to the side. Usually there are 2 shards left at where you were guarding.
    4. Either get off the moogle or use dodge and dive for "Devour"
    5. When it uses the tail attack, I find it more consistent to get off the moogle first and then use dodge and dive. Otherwise the ice can sometimes hit your feet.
    6. When it chases you, get off the moogle and start running along the edge. It will do three laps and it only comes at you at the first and the third.
    Wave 4:
Mostly just guarding. When it uses Gnash, start running sideways and use dodge and dive. With bravery, it will mostly kill you in one hit. Block or evade timing for this guy is earlier than it looks like, I needed time to adjust. This one can't be poisoned, so just kill it with pure DPS.
    Wave 5:
On hard, Mindflayer splits whenever it uses its big moves. You will most likely get stunlocked to death by the lightning storm or eldritch horror (~4000 dmg).
I find it easier to just stick closer to it to bait the tentacle attacks, though I would get off the moogle and start running when I see it trying to use the lightning move.
Since you don't have synergy moves to pressure it, blocking it up close with precision guard materia + plasma discharge (with steadfast block charging ATB) does valuable stagger damage to it, speeding up its demise.

Damn, amazing guide. Mindflayer seems a bit like RNG whether he decides to do that laser move or not. Gets me everytime he does.

He tends to go through phases: lightning - grab - pebbles - laser (eldritch horror) - telekinesis from what I have experienced. If you kill him fast enough, you probably would never see him use the laser.

@@knightningale9068Eventually managed it by just going over the top with DPS and staggers. Insane how much gorgon shield and plasma discharge help. Thank you again for the guide!

You don't, it is a 25% chance to get it. You can use a time materia for a stop though.
