I have my late grandpas h&r 12, its my favorite shotgun. And i do have to say your son is a crackshot with it. Makes me happy to see todays youth enjoying the same things i got to.
I still have my near mint 1977 H&R Topper model 58 12ga. modified choke that Santi Clause brought me Christmas of 1978 !! It sports a nice Sims Recoil tamer , a soft slip on leather sling and a clamp on fiber optic front sight and an extended hammer spur !!! It can now shoot about 7 or 8 different calibers using those rifled gun adapters I bought for it so it's a real nice set up and the last gun I'de ever get rid of !!!
#5 high brass has been a staple in our family for many decades same as 2 3/4" and 3" in birdshot and Buckshot with occasional rifled slugs. Dad had three different single shot shotguns, a Savage and a Springfield and a New England Arms, similar to the H&R, I also have an N.E.A. and a Baikal side by side 12 gauge.
That case hardening is beautiful - I imagine the camera's not quite doing it justice. She may not be the most fantastic, perfect firearm, but it's a tube that'd put food on the table and I imagine many Americans over the last 50ish years have lived their lives alongside this tool. Thanks for the history, and for spending the ammo. That ejector is way too much fun - worth that sharp recoil!

My dad had one and now I have it
I was given one in 20 gauge by my grandfather in 1977. I will soon be handing it down to my grandson.

My dad had a Topper 12 Gauge and I used it to shoot whatever great fun but definitely more recoil than a pump action
Especially with magnum turkey loads lol 😆
