Harrington and Richardson Topper Junior 490 20 gauge, 26” barrel modified choke
New England Firearms Topper SB1 .410, 26” barrel full choke
Harrington and Richardson Model 088, 20 gauge, 26” barrel, full choke… soon to be made into a more fun shotgun
I apologize for the audio being a little uneven- I recorded it over a couple days, and for whatever reason the audio level is not even.
Hardly noticed it. Thanks for sharing. And the afghan does add a nice touch. ✌🏼
I found my family member's old rusted NEF Pardner SB1 in 12 gauge. After an hour of sanding and polishing, I brought it back to life. Gorgeous little cheap shottie. A great truck or farm gun. I think they paid $90 for it brand new back in 1995 at Dick's Sporting Goods. lol
The actual gun is hardened steel compared to the normal steel barrel. The wood is solid and beautiful Walnut. Every home should have one of these just based on price alone. They do kick but are still great beginner shotguns and super easy to maintain. If you see one online or in a pawn shop for under $150, talk them down 20 bucks and buy it!
Glad you revived it! They’re great utility shotguns. No frills, they just work! I bought another after this video, 12 gauge turkey gun with. 3 1/2” chamber, haven’t shot it yet, and I won’t put 3 1/2 shells in it
I bought the H&R 20 gauge like the one shown in 1969 for $35 at the local Wal Mart. I still have the gun in excellent condition. It was always an accurate, easy to shoot shotgun.
That's awesome
Does it shoot modern day shells ?
@@jameswrobinson yeah they’ll shoot modern shells.
Yes.@@jameswrobinson
I love those old H&R singles! My first new gun at age 12 was one of these in 16 gauge. It still shoots great
They are so well built and a great piece of American and Mew England firearm history
I saved all summer to buy that thing. I wanted the 12 but it was 59.99 and the 16 was 54.99 at a local store called Maloney’s. That was 1979 and I only had enough for the 16 with taxes of course.
Very nice collection of single shot shotguns the bluing on the one is great , the color case harding looks very nice. I only have one it was my grandfather's I think it's a new haven 12 gauge. The single shot you have to make it count , it's a great tool to learn with
They’re super fun to practice with. I never really appreciated them till recently. Side by side, over under, and single shot teach technique
They are cool hope you get one in every gauge
I don’t think I want one in every gauge. I don’t have any desire to shoot a 10 gauge single shot… the 28 gauge I may entertain, but ammo is expensive and not that available either.
I gave one of these in 12 gauge to my son and another to my father in law. I ended up buying another new single shot Stevens 301 12 gauge off gunbroker.
I learned to hunt with a single shot. I pretty much only hunt with one even today.
Good way to learn to conserve ammo, and make every shot count
I think the gun lives again in the savage / Stevens 301.
With the safety update. Which some of us will never understand. Thanks for the video I also have a collection of the H&R.
/ New England. Shotguns.
Yes you’re right, but the Stevens / savage are made elsewhere. These were still made in Massachusetts up til NEF closed. When they were refreshed in the 2000’s (?) they went overseas for the guns and re-used the brand.
@@crankygunreviews Yes, I know Marlin made some for a while after they took it over. I've seen my first one earlier this year. At a gun show. On a table, but my second time around it was gone. Don't know where Marlin. made them.
@@mathewgoebel4078 I think China or Turkey but I can’t recall either
Their single shot rifles are great as well.
Yeah, I haven’t seen many of those around though.
Bought a 20 ga when I was 9 years old. Worked all summer mowing yards to buy it, new!! Did a lot of bird hunting with mine, in western Kansas, with my dad. Bought a 12 ga new England arms a while back and they kick, with tough pheasant loads!! Had to slip on a recoil pad on that gun!!
They are very well built
I have the sb1 In 20 gauge love it soo much light easy to Cary picked it up used for 90 bucks from local ffl .
That’s a great deal!
All awsome single shots they are worth every penny .it's a poor man's wepon
I have the H&R Topper Model 158 in the 410 with a 28 inch barrel and Full Choke. It was made around 1970.
Very nice!
I have one in 20ga given to me by my grandfather. Soon to be handed down to my grandson.
Just picked up 2 H&R’s single shot 20 gauge for less than $200 bucks a piece. They’re in excellent shape! Can’t wait to shoot them!
They’re great! The recoil is surprising because they’re so light though
You can bet that every American has their own story about this shotgun.
You can probably find one behind every door in America 🇺🇸 my very 1st real gun was a HnR 20 ga. Got it for Xmas back in the 70s. Best Xmas I ever had and I'm 54. I don't have that gun anymore but I still own one. Dropped everything from a squril to a 140 lbs buck.
I’ve seen a few more really nice ones at Cabelas I’d buy them all if I had room for them lol
I have a NEF 20ga, cut down to 18.5", Added Rubber Butt Pad, 6 Shot Shell Carrier on the Stock, Trillium Sight. Fire Starting/Fishing Kit in the Stock. Makes a great 'Survival' unit. Breaks down to fit in a small Backpack.
Excellent
I have h and r in 11 defrent calipers great guns
That’s awesome! I’m still eying a 45-70 but it’s more than I want to spend
Thanks for showing. My first shotgun was an H&R 410 and it was bought for me around 79 or 80. Think it came from Montgomery ward? I traded it off around 90 for an old 7.65 Argentina Mauser that used to be my dad’s. I’ve been looking for a replacement but haven’t found a decent one yet or when I get a lead on it it’s gone. I’ve had a 10 gauge short short barrel choked when they first came out with them for turkey hunting, A 243, and a rifle slug 12 gauge that I just got rid of. I bought a heavy barrel 223 back around 94 or 95’. That thing with the heavy trigger shot one hole groups at 100 yards. I just wanted to start getting into coyotes at the time. Sold it to a buddy and bought several other rifles, of course through the years and traded off as well. I just bought my little 223 back two years ago! I took it out with some random 60 grain Vmax hand loads for my other rifles and it shot one whole group sent 100 yards in an inch and a quarter five shot group at 200 yards!… Even with the crappy heavy trigger. The original 4x Tasco German haired scope crosshairs fell apart while shooting so I threw a sportsman 6 x 24 power on it. I can see where I hit it 200 yards with it. It’s ridiculous and clear for a cheap scope. I wanted to stick with Tasco because that’s the budget. I had back in the day and to keep it nostalgic.
Great story! I really like these shotguns
I bought a 20 gauge likes this in 1984. It has a full choke barrel
20 gauge in these lock pretty hard too huh?
Single shot shotguns are the best.
They really are great!
PLENTY of beat-up Toppers out there to purchase cheap, and Cut-Down the barrels and Stocks. I would leave to Pristine Ones in Their original condition... 👍
Right on
Don't cut them down. I got 5 H&R I Got 48 in 16Ga snap on. Rimfir got 3barrles need 22LR 13barrles for 2 recvers love them.
Too late :) the 088 is now a nice compact unit
The flame on the forend on the top one is ridiculous
I know! Is it considered flame in the grain or is it burlwood? I guess I’m not sure. But this certainly was from a time when even budget guns had great craftsmanship
It’s beautiful. Amazing craftsmanship.
I agree
The first one of these guns I bought was in 1968 ,,,it cost me 29.95 at a sky city store in hickory NC
That’s awesome.
Nice guns, I worked at New England Firearms 1990- 1993. I did the Bay State(coloring of the frame).
Aww dude that’s awesome! That was the Gardner factory years right?
Yes it was. Unfortunately never bought one when I worked there.@@crankygunreviews
@@user-eb4sr4ml4g darn- did you have an employee discount too?
That was the only reason I bought this gun today. Jus stands out from the other boring 1 shot shotguns
@@frozen9065 yeah I like these a lot
Barrels for these guns can still be bought ,,a few years ago I found where and they had many brand new barrels for around 65 dollars each ,,I also bought some other parts from this same company
Yeah I know. They really were a working man’s gun.
@@crankygunreviews I have eight now ,,still have that first one I got in 1968
@@bobbygreen2291 🥹😀 that’s awesome! I have bought a 12 gauge since this video- I did a video on that one too- it’s a newer model with a screw in choke, tight turkey choke.
They also made those in 32 gauge with rifled barrels, I’ve got one.
Very cool! They make them in a lot of rifle calibers too- there was a 45 LC at my Cabelas recently, I wanted it but for $799, I couldn’t see it…
Had the stock and fore grip on my NEF H&R 20ga stained with a dark espresso stain it looks amazing
I didn’t like the stock look of it. Have a side saddle from field and stream. Great light gun my dad bought me when I was young.
Good for small and big game. Good video buddy
What kind of wood is it? I'm refinishing my stock now and want to make sure it takes stain well...thanks! What did you use to finish it after staining?
I have a bit of an addiction with these myself , last count was 16 in various gages and calibers.
Wow, I think I’m up to 5- always keep and eye out. I want to get a 45-70 that my Cabelas has, it’s near mint, case harden blued everything, but for $600 and $2 a round it’s slightly less appealing… the rifle caliber ones are pricey
@@crankygunreviews just bought the buffalo classic 45 - 70 this weekend, and I found the 500 S&W that one only took me 17 years to find . Good luck .
@@donpegar2645 nice!
@@crankygunreviews after looking on line 600 is not a bad price .
Yes please leave the top shotgun in its original configuration its in such great shape
Yeah I left that one alone and shortened the model 088.
@@crankygunreviews
Very nice brotha
I just found a New England single shot 12 Guage at a local pawnshop ima pick it up if it's still there on Tuesday
@@texaspatriot9159 they have been popping up super cheap near me lately- tons of them, I had to start passing them up because there have been so many- there is a nice 45-70 Harrington and Richardson I’ve been watching at Cabelas, but it’s like $595 and I don’t want to spend that much for a gun I know I’ll hate shooting (but looks cool).
@@crankygunreviews
Yeah that's quite a bit of money to have tide up if your not going to be using it.
I'm going to see how much they will go down on the price because they have it for 210 and it's now in perfect shape
@@texaspatriot9159 $210 isn’t bad, I paid between $150 and $225 for mine
Well, ya know, maybe the reason there was no lead-fouling in the one is because shot rides inside shot cups thru the bore. Lol
Not if you shoot foster slugs or cheap buckshot.
I have the 28ga , it’s a great rabbit gun
Cool!
I have an old H&R 12 gauge. My Daddy got it used, probably in the 30’s. On the receiver, underneath H&R Arms Co., In bigger, script letters is Bay State. It has a 32 inch, full choke barrel. If anyone has any information and approximate year made I’d appreciate it.
That’s super cool!
As of right now I've got 2 of these guns, I've got a .223 nef handi rifle, with the Shiney receiver, ejector not extractor and bull barrel and man it is in perfect shape, and the other that I have is a h&r pardner 13 gauge that I'm going to use for my 12 gauge to 30-30 adapter with an 18" adapter, I also have my buddies nef 20 gauge in my safe to keep it safe for him so technically I have 3 in my house. Kinda been looking at a 30-06 nef handi rifle but don't know if I'll go get it or not.
My local Cabelas has one in 45
Colt and I want it so badly but it’s like $799 🥺 I still kind of want it though.
@crankygunreviews damn that's spendy, this 30-06 nef I been lookin at it only 379 at the pawn shop with a scope on it, may try and get it for 350 in a few weeks if it's still there. Has a really light color possibly maple furniture on it. Just love these little break barrel guns. Wish they still made them
@@calvinsallee yeah there’s not a lot of them around except shotguns.
@crankygunreviews yup it took me forever to find this 12 gauge & I would have preferred to have gotten one with either the Shiney blue or color case hardening, the 12 gauge I found is like a 26" barrel parkerized pardner modified barrel bore, bought it to use my 30-30 adapter, in 2 other shotguns I've tried it in it didn't work well in them but it's supposed to work well in this one so I guess I'll find our
I bought one in 708 new como stock couldn't hit a basket ball at35 steps
I have one in 12/70 an .22
Awesome!
Good video. Have a 12 GA & 410 would like to find a 16 ga.
16’s are few and far between
Hi Please can you share with me if you or anyone has an idea of how to assemble and put back a. Completely stripped H&R Topper 88 shot gun 12gauge which all the parts are there and also if anyone has spare parts for these moviemaking 12G shot guns?
Thanks
M
I’ve never taken one completely apart, keep looking hopefully you’ll find something.
I have a Topper in immaculate shape! Need info reach out to me
Thanks
Yes please do not cut on this fine machine these guns where made so precise that to cut one would be a shame I have a couple nef's no way would I let his happen ty....
Too late, already did. Have a couple videos on it
Jus bought one from the pawn shop for 140$. 12 gauge. To bad it’s sawed off I’ll try to find one that isn’t
@@frozen9065 might be able to just find another barrel- try gunpartscorp.com. $140 is a good deal for any gun that shoots these days. I paid about $200-229 for each of mine. Might have paid more for the 12 gauge turkey gun I have now, but not sure.
I Have A 158 Topper In 410 G
That’s excellent
$220 god those used to be $99
Yeah, well inflation happens.
Hi Does anyone know what chokes would fit on this rifle !
None of mine are threaded. They’re machined into the barrel
I have a H & R single shot rifle, 45-70 buffalo classic and it sometimes don't fire the primer. What is wrong, hammer spring, or transfer bar or firing pin ?
@@roofdriller1537 it could be any of the above, it also could be whatever brand of ammo you were shooting out of it just has hard primers
i have had misfires with 3 different brands of ammo, so it's not the ammo. If it can't bust a cap i don't need it. That is a very bad thing, a gun that won't fire. I honestly think it's the transfer bar cause a gunsmith told me to check spring by placing quarter on the firing pin and it should hit the ceiling, and it did, well, then here n there it would not. After looking carefully, there is some side to side play in the bar and i think that is my culprit, taking to gunsmith later next week, but gosh, that thing shoots a ton, well worth getting fixed.
@@roofdriller1537 I almost bought a 45-70 single action H&R at my local Cabelas. Been waiting for its price to drop, it’s a little more than I want to spend… one possible problem, if it sat in a gun store for a long time, maybe the hammer was pulled back and it weakened the hammer spring. But ultimately the transfer bar hits the firing pin, and if it doesn’t transfer enough power or if the firing pin spring is stronger than the hammer spring can overcome… any of those could be issues.
@@crankygunreviews that is a good point. i'm gonna find out when i take it in next week. but yea it shoots so damn hard, and accurate and the williams sights are nice too. if i can think to remember, i'll let you know what we find out and if we can fix it, hell i can't find parts for it no where but maybe gunsmith can.
@@roofdriller1537 I’d like to know. The Williams peeps are part of why I want one- and the particular one I’ve seen is really nice, case hardening is nice still, and it’s tight. I suspect they don’t get fired much cause the round is pretty big
