To really understand how good Sid actually is, you have to watch the video “100 best crosby plays” or watch an entire game. He does all the little things. He is defensively solid and makes his teammates better. If you understand hockey, you know why he is considered on of the best even though he doesn’t have as many crazy flashy highlights as mcdavid or ovie. He also was the youngest captain to ever lead a team to a Stanley cup and he scored the golden goal. You should check out Evgeni Malkin. Geno has played with Sid since they were both rookies (pretty much). He could have gone to any other team and been the number one guy, but he decided to stay in Pittsburgh to play with Crosby.

The number 4 play is as much about the context as it is about the goal itself. Crosby became well known in Canada as a teenager, and was quickly being hyped as the next Gretzky. He had just been drafted 1st overall by the Penguins, and was playing against a Canadian team for the first time.
Also 2005-06, Sid’s rookie season, was the first year the NHL started using shootouts to decide games instead of having ties. There had been a lockout the previous year that caused the cancellation of the entire season, so this was a moment that represented a new era for the league

Yes Sidney Crosby is still playing at an elite level for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The best player of his generation for sure only Alex Ovechkin comes as close to him for the most dominant player between the mid-2000s-2010s. Oddly enough, not only is he not the best Penguin ever (that would be Lemieux), he might not even be the second best. Jaromir Jagr should be on your watchlist. Why? He has the second most points in NHL history and had a very long career. How long? Sid's game isn't very flashy, but he does every aspect of the game extremely well. Incredibly smart, great vision, fantastic work ethic. He's also super strong on his skates, protects the puck well, has some moves, good wall work, good at faceoffs, and competitive as hell - he also has one of the best backhand shots of all time. And apparently backhanders are harder for goalies to read coming off the stick. McDavid is faster and has more offense, but I'd still take Crosby's career over what I think McDavid's will turn out to be.
Crosby currently sits at #15 on the all-time scoring list. By the end of next season, he will be in the top 10. If he stays healthy and has the desire to keep playing, he should finish in the top 5. He even has a theoretical chance at top-3. Potentially even top-2. But Gretzky's record is still ridiculously out of reach. Crosby would almost have to double his entire career total to reach Wayne.

They are great goals, but every game he does something ridiculous--passing,skating, puck possession (2-3 opponents go into a corner with Sid to get the puck and Sid comes out with it). He was Sid "the Kid" because he started in the NHL when he turned 18! As I said below he is 36 this season and still great! You should see his "golden goal" that won the gold medal for Canada over the US in the 2010 Olympics. He is a legend--top 5 players of all time. Numerous players had been touted as "The Next One", but failed to live up to the hype.
It wasn't until both Crosby and Alex Ovechkin came along in 2005 that the NHL got what it was desperately searching for: not just one, but two generational, era-defining super-duper mega stars.

Crosby is one of the best players in the history of the NHL. Holds the record as the youngest Captain to win the Cup. Is the only player to be in the triple gold club (i.e. a player who has won a Cup, and Olympic gold, and a World Championship gold) who Captained all three of his teams. He’s also won World Juniors gold and World Cup gold.
But my favorite random stat is that for all 18 years of his career he’s been more than a point per game player. The only other player in the history of the NHL who’s had a longer streak is Wayne Gretzky at 19 seasons.

GoPro did a segment with a bunch of NHL players where they strapped a camera to their helmets and one of them was for Crosby and they did "keepaway" drills like the one he did on #6 there. Was super fun to watch.
Also Sidney Crosby's shootout goal was when the NHL introduced the shootout into the game instead of ties. And it was his first in a professional game so it was a huge moment.
Commenting at 4/12/2024 and Crosby has 41 goals and SOO many are redirections/tips. He's a freaking master at them, sometimes the angle is extreme and he finds a way. Gotta love watching him.

Jaromir Jagr should be next. First Lemieux, then Jagr followed by Crosby. The Penguins have had a run on generational players. There's also Malkin who has practically been with Crosby his whole career. Jagr played with Lemieux and Lemieux's final season was Crosby's rookie season.

Between 1987 and 2014, a Penguin won the Art Ross Trophy (most points in a season) 15 times. Mario Lemieux (6), Jaromir Jagr (5), Sidney Crosby (2), and Evgeni Malkin (2). It’s been an embarrassment of riches for decades, but our window may finally be closing. 2-3 more years until the dark ages.

Crosby did play on the same team as Lemieux, but did not play at the same time as Lemieux.
Earlier in his career, he was awesome, but was also known as "Crybaby" Crosby because he liked to complain quite a bit. He's way more conservative with his complaints. Now that he's a 17-season veteran, as you should, he understands the game way more.
