Each team gets one timeout per game. Timeouts are not a huge part of hockey but are used at the end of the game if the coach wants to give his players a rest or talk strategy. Besides that, the game does not stop for substitutions which makes the game have a unique flow despite players subbing in and out every minute

I emigrated to Canada from England over 50 years ago and hockey has been a big part of my life in Canada . The most rewarding part of hockey is seeing my son learn to play and then my granddaughters and grandsons take up the sport. I love that the girls play hockey too and in my family the girls are the more talented players! First and foremost hockey players must learn to skate well before they can get involved with the puck and NHL players are amazing skaters . Nice video- thanks

Hockey is not the most popular sport in the US, it definitely is in Canada. I’m an American from the South but I have been a huge hockey fan for over 20 years. Once you go to a game, it’s unlike anything else you’ve seen. Absolutely amazing. My only tattoo is my hockey teams logo.
Fun fact: last time I tried this, I asked Siri on my iPhone “who is the magic man?” Siri replied with Pavel Datsyuk and listed his stats.
What Team do you support? Leaf Fan here. I was 3 yrs old when my family emigrated from Scotland. Raised in Toronto. I often wonder what it was about Hockey, that my Dad embraced (he had never heard of the Sport, in Scotland). I'm glad he did. I played, my children played. For me, it is the most authentic thing, that makes you uniquely Canadian. I always love hearing about it growing in popularity, in the Southern U.S.

There are only 48 players in NHL history that have finished their career with a point per game or more.
@@Childofbhaal rubbish take dude. Datsyuk’s 3 selke trophies and 4 lady byng trophies, and 2 Stanley cups say otherwise. Dude was and still is possibly the most complete player to ever play in the NHL.
Two things about hockey that set it apart from other sports, that is the sheer speed at which everything happens and the unbelievable level of fitness required to play it. There's a reason that even elite athletes can only play in 45 second bursts before they have to get off the ice.
There is nothing more thrilling than a game 7 sudden death overtime in the nhl playoffs/finals... NOTHING beats it..
One thing most new fans miss is the mass substitutions going on in a game. Usually has 5 skaters on the ice (3 forwards + 2 defensemen) but the pace is so fast is that they will get gassed after 2 mins. So there are constant "line changes" going on as skaters jump off the ice and new groups jump on. All in the middle of play. There is no stoppage of play, no announcement of number x replacing number y, just a quick flurry of non-stop action. The coordination is immense and a mismanaged line change can lead to goal against you. It helps to see a live game to understand it fully.
The Boston bruins are having a record season this year and I'm happy you guys are getting into the sport. Alot of Americans hold hockey just as high as football when it comes to a contact sport. I'm from Massachusetts so i hope the bruins can win the Stanley Cup this year and not choke in the playoffs again

The 2011 Stanley Cup finals was the best I can remember, juggernaut going against the underdog Bruins. Most had the Bs getting swept or in 5 games. But the flip flop of games, bad blood, comments after games by players. It was just so entertaining

The most popular sport in Canada and Finland. NHL is even more impressive when you've gone on the ice and tried it yourself. These guys' ability to skate and shoot the puck is phenomenal. It's not easy, that I can tell.
Nothing like seeing NHL games live - the speed of live play is breathtaking!
Slow motion shows so much more than what we see in full motion. We only see it in replays, of course, but I would HIGHLY recommend you guys watching a compilation of great plays at full speed (they'll show the slow motion as well).
Look for guys like Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and others in full flight. It's unbelievable that they can do this skating 30 to 35 km's an hour (around 20 miles an hour)!
I'm happy to say I was at the game when the Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup. To make it even better, the winning goal was made by my favorite player (Alec Martinez, the guy who threw his gloves in the air). What a night !!!

The really cool thing about hockey is that the game is so draining in terms of physicality that all teams rotate through 4 sets of forwards and 3 pairs of defensemen with substitutions happening during play. As a result, some lines will be better than others and creating smart combinations of players who complement each other is crucial, and looking for matchup advantages against team’s different lines is fascinating

Any good announcer will point out when a player has been on the ice longer than a minute and a half.
Fun facts: The Stanley Cup is the only major sports trophy that is not reproduced for the Champion every year. To date, their are 56 Super Bowl trophies. One for each year it has been won. There is only one Stanley Cup. The cup at the top of the trophy is the Presentation Cup, commissioned in 1963. The original cup, donated by Lord Stanley and retired in 1962, is displayed in a vault at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The bands are engraved with the names of the players who have been on the winning teams over the years. The newest band is always the bottom band. Also, every player on the winning team gets to take possession of the Cup for 24 hours.
My state, North Carolina, doesn’t typically care about hockey, but with the Hurricanes being good this year it’s cool to see the swing towards the sport in local bars and restaurants. It’s an awesome sport!
Yes, there are timeouts in Hockey. Each team gets one. Usually taken towards the end of the third period to do some last minute coaching or some “secret” plan to win the game. Or it can be taken at anytime where the opposition has scored a few quick goals. The coach would want to settle down his team and say “let’s start fresh!”

Hockey is the most similar to soccer of any popular American sport. The main draw about hockey for me is the fact that a goal always feels like it can happen at any moment. A 1-0 game can be as good as a 6-5 game

Goalies often do splits…they have to cover that goal cage. Try Sidney Crosby’s Puck Protection. There are so great highlights out there. Good reactions!
Finally coming around to my favorite sport. When a hockey player touches the puck, he cannot close his hand around it or carry it, he can only swat it or quickly direct it back to the ice. But he's also the only player on his team that can touch it afterward. If his teammate touches the puck after it was gloved, that's a hand pass and will get a whistle for a stoppage of play/faceoff. If you ever react to specific games, you have to watch the historic comeback that happened during the Sharks vs Golden Knights game 7 during the 2019 playoffs. Great video, guys!

You can pass the puck with your hand in your own zone (Inside your own blue line and goal line)
I live in and was born and raised in Florida, so the only thing we had on ice was tea. 😂 Watching those players put their bodies between the puck and goal is something else. The dimensions of a regulation puck are 3 inches in diameter (about 76 mm) and 1 inch thick (about 25 mm). They're made of rubber, but like the kind they make car tires out of, so they're not squishy like you might expect. They're also coming at you at speeds that would make an MLB pitcher envious. Never been a big hockey fan, but I've got lots of respect for the guys who play it.
I played Goal. Yeah. The rubber. I think you have a good description. However. I would say it is much harder and denser, than car tires rubber. When it hits you, it feels more like I would think a rubber bullet would feel like. Even with all the equipment worn by players. Broken bones, from being hit in an unprotected area, are common.
You guys have to check out the "best dekes and dangles" video. Really shows the finess and athletic side of the sport. Also Patrick kane was my favorite player growing up and he's the reason I fell in love with the support. Some people think he has some of if not the best hands in the league still. Shots can actually break bones so them sacrificing their bodies to block is crazy. There's a vid of a player called Gregory Campbell who blocked one, broke his leg and still continued to play out his shift when his team was on the penalty kill. Was pretty savage.
Dominik Hasek compilation. One of the best goalies of all-time. The saves he made by using his whole body and all the ice surface he could was mind blowing. He practiced doing what he did. The saves he made were mind blowing.

You guys should watch the college hockey championship game later today! There's always crazy drama in the Frozen Four.
Not sure about all the slow-motion in this one, they kind of lost the sense of speed that makes a lot of those plays so impressive.
Now as for compilations that will impress you, check out some goalies' best work. Dominik Hasek is a must, but don't do him first or you'll just be confused by his oddness. Check out more traditional greats first - Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Hendrik Lundqvist - so you have something to compare to when you watch Hasek.

I suggest watching a hockey compilation in real time. See the speed and little reaction time these athletes really have. A slow motioned video shows every move, but real time really shows the talent. Love playing hockey and love watching hockey, especially watching my son year after year growing up and developing his game.
Canada is the home of hockey, and it's very popular in USA also. Russia is traditionally a strong hockey country but it's actually very popular in northern Europe as well, being clearly the #1 sport in i.e Finland. There is actually quite a lot of Finns in this compilation. :) Thanks Pekka! Also Czech and some baltic countries have done well and it's gaining popularity and raising it's profile in Germany as well. To me (Finn) it's easily my most loved sport.

We love our hockey in N America, for sure. Easily the most popular sport in Canada with the NFL probably a close second up there. Probably 3rd or 4th most popular sport here in the US, but that's nothing to sneeze at. The the more compact NHL rink compared to the international size makes for a faster paced and intense game, IMO. We seem to love our violence in N American team sports 🤣
7:03 there are a lot of stoppages in play, offsides, goalie freezing the puck, goals etc, but players are able to rotate their lines on the fly while the play is moving. There is usually 4 lines of 3 forward each and 3 lines of 2 defence each. And yes there are time outs. I think each team has 1 per game (if I am wrong please let me know!!)

The should have had a segment on the beauty of fans and showed the video of me failing down the steps at the Boston Garden while holding a tray of two plates of nachos and four beers.
With the NHL playoffs about to start, I think you guys should pick a series to watch. NHL playoffs are wildly entertaining, especially sudden death OT. Teams playing against each other in a series grow a hatred towards each other so there's extra tension. I'd suggest watching the Edmonton Oilers since they've got the best player in hockey in Connor McDavid who is fun to watch. If they end up playing against the Kings, it should be a good series.
You should react to Dominik Hasek he was so good he had a game once he got 70 saves in one game and a shutout
There is a UK pro hockey league, I believe Belfast won the cup last season, so you can actually go to a live game.
There is another video, somewhere showing Sidney Crosby going and giving his condolences to Martin St.Louis previous to that game.
That’s something that is sometimes overlooked is the tremendous respect players have for each other.
On the ice it’s WAR but off ice.. respect.

Canadian here. Explosive speed and violence 45 seconds at a time in an enclosure. More intense than any game on earth. We speak of the game as warfare
St Louis scoring on mothers day was like 2 days after his moms death. We were down in the series. He scored first in the game. Everyone knew we were winning thag game. We did. And we came back from behind and beat them in 7.
It was the turning point in the series.
Just to clarify a few things... in the NHL you can take one 30 second time out at any time. The play where Crosby hits it with his glove and 'passes' to himself is a legal play but he cannot close his hand on the puck... that would be a 2 minute penalty. If you 'glove ' the puck and it goes to your team mate then it is whistled down and a face off is called in it happens in the offensive zone only. The Stanley Cup was originally a challenge cup for any team but has been awarded as the trophy for the NHL playoff champion and was donated by the Englishman Lord Stanley over a 100 years ago.
What you don’t get from that video is the sense of the speed of the game. All slow motion is cool though to see the skills these guys have.
We did see some speed with the hardest hits but this was nice to see things slowed down too. Plenty to come on Hockey though as we build into the sport. Thanks for the comment

They were surreal when they first were picked and played on the Detriot Red Wings in the 90s and had a major influence in hockey. It was quite literally like watching 5 artists finessing and teaching the entire world how to push hockey to the next level.
They changed the game.
The Stanley Cup has the winning team’s names engraved on a small plaque. They keep adding plaques so the trophy keeps growing. Some names are misspelled, but they don’t change the original plaques.
Martin St-Louis, the player who scores on Mother’s Day, is now coach of the Montreal Canadien. He never was drafted but walked his way to the all of fame. I support the suggestion of having a Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr reaction but if you want a suggestion on an active player have a look at Connor McDavid, he’s fantastic! (Other active players: McKinnon, Zegras and Makar)
was going to say the first goal they show of his put the Habs out and his mother was interviewed and said she had been a Habs fan her entire life but her son had her full support and she would cheer him on always
Each team is allowed one timeout in a game. Usually used by a team that’s down 1 or 2 goals near the end of the game to design a play, or by a team that gives up multiple goals in short succession to regain their composure

You are allowed to catch the puck... but you have to immediately drop it and then play it with your stick... if another player touches it before you can with your stick... or if you just throw it... it's considered a hand pass which is not allowed.
Its more common than you think... when I played pucks would ricochet up and sometimes they were within your reach so why not?
And that last clip... Marty St. Louis is my all time favorite player and that Mothers Day moment was truly special.

Guys, there was a member of Bruins on the Big Bad Bruins from the Bobby Orr era named Ken Hodge. Hodge was born in the UK and was a take no prisoners type of guy.
All the big sports have great moments and amazing athletes. The thing about hockey is that it's such an intense sport because lines change without the game stopping. This means that it is pedal to the floor every second. It gets so fast that if you don't know what is going on, it can feel like Kaos. If you are interested to check out Hockey, start by identifying the best players (stars) on the team and jersey numbers and spot them at all times on the ice. Usually the main plays will form around them. Scoring goals is very difficult because goalers are very good and defenceman will do anything to stop you. Only extraordinary effort and tactics (or luck) will work.
Gretsky’s goals from behind the net are the best.
The goalie doing the splits is Johnathon Quick. He was the starting goaltender for the LA Kings at the time and is quite known for his ability to do the splits across the whole net

Not sure if it's been answered yet but:
Stoppages happen in hockey for a variety of reasons. Whenever the goalie makes a stop where he covers the puck, the play gets reset with a face off in the offensive zone.
When a goal is scored, play gets reset with a faceoff in the neutral zone.
When a penalty is assessed, or offside occurs, play gets reset.
Also there are boards but sometimes the puck can go over the glass or into the bench which also resets play. Obviously these wouldn't be shown in comps but if you watch a game it'll be quite obvious!

something i have yet to see any reactor cover is Overtime. Most of hockey's most glorious moments come because in the playoffs we play indefinite periods until there is a goal scored to break the tie and declare a victor.
You should watch Nicklas Lidstrom highlights. One of the best defensemen ever. He won 7 Norris trophies and 4 Stanley Cups. He was called the Perfect Human. Played his entire career for the Detroit Red Wings. Another good watch is the Euro Twins (Datsyuk and Zetterberg). They were awesome to watch! Yes I am a Red Wings fan!
Even when watching others react I get choked up at "But hockey...."
I guess some answers to your questions:
1) The guy who threw the puck around behind his back, number 87, he CAN legally do that while A) he doesn’t close his hand on the puck entirely, B) doesn’t pass it to a teammate, which will classify it as a hand pass (illegal).
2) The NHL (National Hockey League) only permits a single, 30-second timeout for each team, each game. Unlike American football when there’s three timeouts per half, and basketball of 7 timeouts per game. And like how American football and basketball works, they wait until the time of play is stopped or during a non-live ball setting to substitute their players. While in hockey, you can make player substitutions or “line changes” during a live play or when the play is whistled dead, so the game is much, much faster than the two mentioned previously. The only time you will a timeout be taken during a game is if a team is down by one goal, and have enough time left in the game to tie it, their coach will gather them at the team bench, pep talk them, strategize a play to get them to tie game. Or if a team ices a puck, have a face off in their defensive zone, the coach will call a timeout to allow for his players to rest and not give a goal, since being to tired and not able to rest on the bench.
One thing I like to compare hockey to other sports is saying this:
It has the physicality of play like football, the fast pace game is like basketball, but you score goals and celebrate as if it’s a futbol goal. AND the reason why you don’t see people with the body physique and muscle of football players and basketball players, is that the players need to be lightweight enough to skate fast enough along the ice, so a 300-pound man would not be beneficial for a hockey team.
If baseball is "poetry in motion" hockey is "a beautiful chaos"

In hockey each team get only one timeout and it is common for neither team to use their timeout. The timeout is often saved for the last few minutes of a game by the loosing team will make a plan or rest their leading scores a bit extra. The timeout is also used sometimes if several goals are scored in a short amount of time by one team. The team that has allowed the goals will call a timeout to give their team a moment to reset and clear their heads.
This one usually makes me tear up at the end, such a fantastic game for sure. Glad you guys are doing these, always love watching new folks react to our beautiful game!

I’m loving the hockey videos. It’s such a cool sport and I’m enjoying learning more about it along with you. It just seems so incredibly hard to play. These guys are amazing! I recently watched a video of mic’d up hockey referees, and it was so funny.

You can take a time out in hockey only when play is stopped, and you get up to three each period (three periods in a game. Periods are breaks like halftime in both footballs).
What you need to realize is that any kid in 20 + countries on an elite track can pick a puck out of the air going 90+ miles per hour and stop it , change its direction, or pass it to a team mate. by the age of 17... Like any elite sporting athlete they are amazingly skilled.

As to your Timeout question: Each team has 1 roughly 30 second timeout each game. However they are for the most unused.
Highly recommend some Pavel Datsyuk highlights. He had some of the best hands in hockey of all time.

My son played goalie from age six to fifteen…..his splits were excellent because when you are really young your flexibility is amazing. Players who settle in the position of goalie at a later age do not have that flexibility any more, so you will notice it is not always the best position for some goalies. When done well, it is the best defence for a shot that remains on the ice.
The Stanley Cup is without a doubt the most difficult trophy to win. The season combined with the playoffs, having to win 16 games. The exit off the highway in New Jersey to Prudential Center, where they play is number 16 for that reason. There's only 1 Stanley cup unlike all the other sports on thew planet where there are just copies given out year after year. The names of the players on the winning team go on the cup on the bands that make up the majority of the trophy and they stay on there between 50 or 60 years. Each player gets to spend 1 day with the cup to go anywhere with it and do, within reason, whatever they want with it. It is truly 1 of a kind.

Yes there are timeouts, they're very rare. Usually happens when a team wants to argue for goalie interference on a goal. If you're wrong your team gets a 2 minute minor penalty
Watch the 1980 Olympic Game between the US (college students) and the USSR (professional hockey players).
Stoppages do occur, off-sides, penalties, icing. plus "TV" time outs. Each team can take only 1 time-out per game, including OT.

@3:40 you are allowed to grab a puck from the air, provided you drop it immediately and take control of it with your stick or skates. You cannot throw the puck, or use your hand to push it somewhere. Only to grab and drop.
Just an observation about hockey players that I think is interesting. They are the only team players (that I'm aware of) who are allowed to be interviewed while the game is still in progress. I think the general intelligence of hockey players is usually underestimated.

Also epic, the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the USSR, at the height of the cold war. I won't even attempt to give a summary because there is too much to say - it was a hugely important event on so many levels. Definitely worth checking out.
teams get 1 timeout for the entire game so coach’s have to use it very wisely. Also I recently found you guys and I love the hockey vids, you guys should watch Patrick Kane highlights, I’m a Chicago Blackhawks fan and even he recently left the team after 16 seasons, his 2010 Stanley Cup winning goal that happened when I was 6 will always be the reason the Blackhawks are my favorite, He is an incredible player that has such skill and precision with his shot.
People often say "its very popular in canada" and overlook europe. i can speak for my country, Finland. i would say hockey is maybe even bigger here than in canada. just look at the 2019 celebrations from "timo wilderness". also, the fact that a country of 5,5 million people prioduces so many prospects for NHL drafts is kinda crazy too and supports what i said.
The top league in the UK is the EIHL. 10 teams from all 4 parts of UK. Well worth a look
There are stoppages when the puck leaves the rink. And each team gets one time-out per game. It's almost all action. The players cycle off the ice every minute or so. If the defense can't clear the zone (get the puck out of their end), the offensive team will cycle in fresh players and skate circles around the defense.
