These mountains are home to a very special fish. A place full of undiscovered treasures. For many of us a place full of mystery and darkness. One of those well kept secrets is the Japanese Nishikigoi (Koi fish).
There are only limited groups of people who knows about these swimming art pieces. This specific fish is not only an important part of the Japanese Culture but also for many that starts in the mountains of the Yamakoshi area in western Japan.
For generations Koi breeders work towards that one moment a year, a stunning spectacle where people from all over the world come together to be part of this event. This is where standards of the Japanese Culture comes to life. The honor and prestige associate with this fish goes further than most ever imagined.
In Part 2 of this series we dive even deeper in to the origin of this mysterious fish. We follow breeders and hobbyists who pursue a dream to achieve the highest goal. This is Inside the secret world of koi.
It is late October.
Most of the Japanese Koi Breeders are busy with the latest preparations before winter arrives in this part of Japan.
They are working hard to harvest all their latest Koi fish from the Mud Ponds in the mountains. During the cold winter months all the fish needs to be inside. Outside these fish have zero chance to survive.
This area is known for the meters of snow it receives every winter from the far North. From the Arctic Ocean and via Russia, cold air collided with the western sea of Japan. And as strange as it may sound, these Koi breeders depend on these large amounts of snow. The snow is an essential part of growing these swimming jewels.
but before the winter arrives, the breeders prepare for a period in which many things are different than in the fall. Tosai!

As a new hobbyist i found this video enlightening and extremely helpful. I too hope to go to Japan one day and hopefully purchase a koi maybe on a ski ing holiday 👍👍
Another fantastic video thank you.
21 minutes into the documentary they show this one Koi it has a Japanese flag on his forehead) right there that the winner. I would have liked to have heard the narrator's voice with a more Japanese traditional accent. But everything is getting more modern. I hope the Japan don't get to moderate and lose their traditional way of life. This is another very good documentary. Thank you. Also hello to all and all yours from Michigan USA May 23, 2020 8:45 PM
Great video
I am Roshan Dassanayake, 52 years old, did watch your videos and riyaly enjoined them. Thank you very much for producing such good videos that watching them could make me want to start a Koi farm in Sri Lanka.

I know that I have to learn a lot on this event.. Hope to join your family of Koi farmers and start studying haw they do it, what conditions it neads and what sort of metirials I hawe to be equipped with.
I riyaly appreciate if you can gide me to this with all the expiriyans you have. Thank you very much.

Gorgeous fish! Amazing scenery too. Thanks for sharing this. I can't wait until spring so I can see my koi again. They are in the deepest part of my pond, under a red bridge with a de-icer keeping a hole in the snow and ice. Can see them moving very slowly around the de-icer sometimes. They react to my voice :-)
