- In this documentary we follow Tony Pitham, Martin and Marc. With a Japanese koi fish costing $100,000, they participate in the largest and most important competition in the world in Japan. That it would not be easy to win the 1st prize quickly became clear in 2005 when they lost the competition with a beautiful "Maruten Kohaku", a white and red Japanese koi fish.
Discover the incredible story of a $100,000 koi fish that became the best in the world. From humble beginnings to international recognition, this fish has an amazing journey. Watch the video to learn more about this rare and prized koi fish!
In 2006 she returned to Japan where, with more money and better relationships with the koi breeders and their broker, they hunted to win the biggest prize. In this compelling video we talk to Tony who, almost 20 years later, has a Koi business in the Middle East. From here he will try to realize his dream and make a bid for a second title.

Yvo I'm just gonna say one thing, THIS WAS A MASTER PIECE OF VIDEO! I know it ws not yours directly but you came up with the idea of putting this together that's just amazing man
Thank you so much Eric! 🙏🙏
Probably the best koi film I've seen on CZcams, really shows what's involved in having a grand champion, well done
Thanks May, all credits to Nik for producing it
Top film. Great insight into a very guarded world in Japan. Well done. 👏
Well put together documentary. I can understand why the win was maybe a little bittersweet for Mark and Martin. They had spent a couple years with the Maruten and placed their hopes and dreams with that fish and then basically at the last minute had to make the switch to the other one that they didn't have an emotional attachment to. It was a great win, but would have been a much more satisfying win with the Maruten.
Bittersweet about spending more money; it wasn't so much about the fish; it was about becoming the first westerns to win the All Japan show.
Absolutely brilliant video, Yvo really interesting 👌🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Many thanks 🙏
Loved this video Yvo great to see the footage behind a historic event in the hobby
More to come!
I also need to see my fish every day. Excellent documentary!
Amazing was a great video. It must’ve been a big rush to win that grand champion position, Hats off to to you !

Amazing videos/ documentary
Thank you!
Great koi doc this 👌
I can live with it. Buying my most expensive koi and left it on the hand of experts to grow and win a championship. But after the big win (or lose if unlucky) that koi should be in my own best pond for a lifetime. I am a koi keeper since 2009 btw. ❤ Great video and to all behind it.
I 100% understand what you are saying here. I think it’s unique footage done by Nik how it all went 20 years ago
@@TheKoiPartner And it looks like done yesterday! That is amazing.
fascinating film. thank you for posting it
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing 👌
Thanks 😊
Well well had koi for forty years and I can honestly say this is the best video I've ever seen. It is a true reflection on the koi hobby. I used to go 15 years ago .as I say absolutely blinding video. Ps koi water barn used to import boxes for me in the day❤❤❤
Thanks!
top video and relay good insight it to the koi show wold 👍
❤Woow one of your best !!!
Let’s be honest there are NO non Japanese winners…the koi are created made and raised in Japan then some foreigners buy the fish and enter competition and win, not really a foreign win. If the fish was created outside of Japan and then entered that would be a British win..All are Japanese All winners are Japanese !
I agree, but it’s really hard to understand the culture and the politics that are involved in this competition. That is what I try to explain in my documentary’s.
Wow...💯💯💯
Great video as usual from you, keep going.
Just to correct the info thats Mr. Tony said "he was the first to introduce Japanese koi in the Middle East in 2017" actually am the one who import Japanese koi to Kuwait from Ogata Koi Farm in 2008.
Thank you for correcting that 😇
Had same emotions and dreams!!
👏👏🏆

Amazing documentary
Thank you so much
Great video Yvo 👏💯 if you have the money and the dreams why not 👍
I agree!
Bred born fed looked after in japan by the Japanese how can you call it yours
Great video! But, I had to turn the volume off at the opera singer moment! Lol!😂
Also, didn't notice it was in retrospect until the end.
The narrator is on another level
I agree
💯
Excellent video. I know the ongoings of buying koi in japan. But these two are greedy people
Don’t forget this video is 20 years ago when things went a bit different. Also these days in other cultures buying fish goes on a different way than we are used to! Anyway thanks for watching! 😃
Great video, stunning koi. I bet waddy would have liked this. Ps. By the looks of the phones and watches I think this is an old video, still good though. 😉 🇬🇧
Yes they do
Quel est le nom de ce type de poisson ?
Recently, 1 guy Andrew Sandler spent over $100,000 to win the American Koi Show.
🤩
Heck yea bro
Fish and money and the games grown men play.
Or cars and money…. Or aquariums and money 😜🙈
I Get it ! b
I'm honestly conflicted by this one. Passion that deserves respect or all that can go wrong with a hobby?
This is a great video, but i feel i would get more pleasure out of raising and refinning a champion fish myself then paying for it to be done. Seems like a hollow victory to me.
Which is fair! I would love such a journey as well ☺️
Assalamualaikum bro.i am from Bangladesh
The fitz guy said he had a 250k koi. What a joke No where near that quakity
Idk, but this is 20 years difference 😜 thanks for watching 😃
he just won grand champ. in vegas. plus inflation. im the owner
so you spend 100k on a fish that you don't get to see daily...I'm sorry..I like koi..I love my koi pond but this is just madness. I'd rather spend £100 and really enjoy looking at it and watching it grow.
But what if you like a fish so much, fall in love with it. And you decide to see your fish in Japan because you know the breeders are the best one to take care of it? Instead of taking the risk it dies in your own pond. It’s not about willing but about risk and loving something so much. Anyway, thanks for watching and reaching out! 😃🫶
Every hobby has an evolution. You go as far as you're comfortable or able. Some people go where no one has gone before. They set the new bar till someone goes further.
The money is relative. 2,000,000 for a race horse, just for a 1 min thrill on race day. It’s a love and passion, you have it or you don’t. If you do, it’s a privilege.
Excuse me, but I beg to differ that these Mermaid Toddlers aren't cute and cuddly.
Does that matter for the dream they chased? 😌
The All Japan Koi Show, still and recently won by pure Japanese-bred koi.
There isn't a single All Japan Koi Show grand champion won by a koi bred in other countries.
A “real” Japanese Koi is a Japanese Koi bred in Japan. No other Koi fish bred in different countries will ever be displayed on a Japanese Koi Show, simply it’s not possible by law, second the Japanese koi industry is unique and protected by the government as the national fish of Japan . Without the breeders in Japan there is no koi industry.
