Jimmy Cliff is one of the under-appreciated singers of the music industry. As well as having a great voice, he is also a very accomplished song writer, people should really check out his back catalogue. People would probably be surprised at some of the well known songs that are his creations. I actually told someone that ‘Limbo - Sitting Here In Limbo’ was his song a few months ago and they were shocked…..there are so many others, too.

He did write "The Harder They Come," which is one of my favorite protest songs. That song and Many Rivers to Cross are on the soundtrack to "The Harder They Come".

Thanks for the great reaction Greg.
This is a powerful song that I turn to during tough times. No matter how bleak things may look, this song reminds me that there’s way to get past it to the other side.

Thanks Bob & Greg. Okay, you're really stirring up memories for me today. I saw Jimmy Cliff at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982. The night the Italians won the world cup. The place was going crazy. I didn't have a ticket but after a couple of bottles of wine my friend Becky from Maryland convinced me to sneak in. It was amazing. Many Rivers To Cross was of course one of the encores.

You gotta watch out for those bad influencers from Maryland . . . 😂

Great tune and performed really well, great piano playing from Jools. It was a big hit by UB40 in the UK.

The original version is "many rivers to cross". Now he sings it in the past tense as "many rivers i have crossed".

I didn't know it was Jimmy Cliff until about 5 years ago, as thought it was UB40's track. What a voice. I remember playing the UB40 cover on my Hi-Fi as a kid and the graphic equaliser lights were always fully lit up for some reason. I loved that.

I think his pride is what kept him from giving up because he didnt want to go back to Jamaica a failed musician. So the thought of being a failure kept him going. He survived because of his pride.
