PS2's game library was already enough to make it sell like crazy. But, the backwards compatibility and the fact that it was also a DVD player made it a legendary monster.

I’ve lived through all of the consoles from the current big 3 console companies and I feel this all the time when I stop to think. It is really hard to reconcile 4 year old me being blown away watching my dad play Wing Commander with what games look like today. What people have been able to achieve is simply incredible.

Its great to see a company like Sony launched their first attempt at gaming after their failed joint venture with Nintendo which was the king back then. To have the guts to stand out since the beginning and more importantly to be able to reshape gaming culture from that moment onwards. It changed the mindset of people from a kid toy to a hobby for all ages.

@@willnicholson18 tbf I've been an xbox fan for 17 years now and I will be switching to PS5 as I wanna be able to play those amazing sony exclusives.
Microsoft is all about power and better graphics which is also good. Xbox series X will be the most powerful console (currently the most powerful one is the Xbox one X), but I prefer quantity over quality so I will go with ps5 to play more games.

PS2, when graphics were good enough to feel ‘realistic’ but not so technical that they cost less than half of what they cost to develop today, this meant less money to lose and more likely to earn back the cost of development through sales therefore developers took more risks in creating one of the most varied library of games on any console!

Uhm PS4 is the easiest gen to make games. Easy PC, Xbone Muliplat. Easy to understand architecture. Ps5 is the same. It got cheaper to make games.

But the graphical requirement doesn’t make the process any cheaper, all though it’s ‘easy’, the different physics at play in the “in game world” to character design and so on require a much larger team of developers who work a lot longer to make the games that are made now, think of Red Dead Redemption 2 for example, beautiful game! But, there’s no way that was a cheap game to make, easy for experienced programmers and developers? Maybe, but very time and cost consuming, PS1 and PS2 could have a development team of maybe 20 people for some games and still release something that was AAA, the point I’m making is, developers or better yet, the corporate heads of these companies are less inclined to take risks and instead stick to known ‘money making formats’ to recoup their investment
Look at the onslaught of First person shooters and so on, and now, (to me personally a worrying trend) of these free to play online games like Fortnite, full of micro transactions and in game advertising that return millions for the companies but are tried and true formats....PS2, was still relatively cheap to develop a game for therefore there were so many different kinds of games because the companies designing them were more confident taking risks because even if it undersold, they’d still likely be recovering the development cost
The worst part is many of those development studios that made those great games shut down.

I'd say the PS4 and PS5 looks the best, the PS3 would look better if it was sleeker than it was but it obviously needed to be fat to fit all the hardware inside of it. But the PS2 looked cool for it's time though and PS1 looked too basic even for it's time.
@@VaeVictis96 I'm sure for their first time in the gaming market they didn't spend too much just in case it didn't go well and that's why they amped it up with PS2. That has to be the reason. Seems legit. I mean you look at the PS1 and it's plain with not much going on and then one gen later they have all kinds of features and even put in a DVD. They could of put a DVD on the PS1 and did more but it was the first time outing and probably didn't want to risk too much even though they WERE risking alot on the first one. I'm glad they did because it freed the once tied down 3rd party developers who only got percentages from Nintendo and Sony came along and said we will only charge a license fee to develop on our Console. And then it all changed after that. And no more LJN games the year Sony launched the PlayStation! Thank God!

It's a weird looking console but I give them credit for going something unique.
Because people have differing opinions. I've had the PS1 up to the PS4, and will no doubt be getting the PS5, but I dislike the design heavily.

IF Sony does go THAT route, then I hope they support it unlike Microsoft who abandoned support for the original Xbox 360 faceplates.

@@sens4lyfe671 back then that price tag was not worth the hardware but considering now the amount of powerful hardware in the ps5 with the fast SSD. Its definitely worth 550 in my opinion I wouldn't mind pay that.
@@jali1 It's worth much more than 599$ in most countries where PC parts are expensive af. Even 599$ will be a steal.
The FACT remains that even at $600 for the PlayStation 5 and $700 for the Series X, both prices are an absolute STEAL. Console-only gamers don't really know the tech that these new consoles are packing. You don't have to like these prices but they are a STEAL regardless.
Also, Inflation exists at least in the U.S. $600 in 2006 adjusted for inflation today = $763. $600 for the PS5 is NOT too much to ask.
P.s. The 3 biggest reasons why the 60GB PS3 was $600 are:
1. The Cell Broadband Engine.
2. Blu-ray disc drive.
3. PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine which enabled full 100% hardware backwards compatibility with ALL PS2 games.
PSYCHO we are just not used to paying those high prices. It’s gonna still gonna be worth it considering Sony’s great track record and failure to disappoint me so far

After the announcement, Nintendo almost immediately stepped away and said it wouldn't be happening, killing the original PlayStation idea.

Next console is gonna heavily feature VR and technologies that we haven't even considered yet (like we haven't considered raytracing just 3 years ago).
It'll still be a physical box, possibly with smart-home integration, but there's a good chance that it'll be exclusively digital distribution.

This honestly feels like the future, not only does the console look so sleek and clean but the event itself and the reveal comes off as a concept product for the future, and also I just realized how insane it is to be living in the year 2020, cuz I remember the ps4 reveal all those years ago back in 2013.
