- Explore how alcohol interacts with your brain, and how it can interrupt the brain’s memory networks, leading to blackouts.
--
Alcohol has been shown to have strange and selective effects on the brain. Many intoxicated people can perform complex tasks like holding a detailed conversation or navigating a walk home. Yet for those experiencing a blackout, the memory of these events is quickly forgotten. So, how does alcohol cause these memory lapses? Shannon Odell explores how ethanol interrupts the brain’s processes.

This is the kind of knowledge that would keep me from drinking alcohol. So if i drink enough, I should be able to forget about it :)
The video is talking about intoxication not merely drinking.
@@danielating1316 It's talking about intoxication with alcohol, so OP is correct. You're not, just playing with semantics.
@@Kimoto504 the guy was talking about drinking alcohol in general even if in moderation. That's different from drunkenness.
@@danielating1316 The guy was talking about drinking in reaction to the video, which discussed getting drunk. He had a negative reaction to drinking because of the video... Do the math.

I like how Ted Ed is keeping the consistency with the animation style for the previous alcohol video. Whoever is behind this needs praise.
read the description :)
I also find it amusing how the animation and presentation style are like those of children's cartoons of the past. It's like TED know how short their viewers attentions spans are, and how dumbed-down everything needs to be. It's extraordinarily condescending, and viewers don't even realise it
@@Bossie93 I don't think many find it condescending, but more relatable to sketches like Schoolhouse Rock
I believe the technical term for this is teleportation in time and place.
I remember the alcohol fuelled time machine. I could walk 5 miles home and think 'Damn, I don't remember much of that!!' 😂
I'm about 390 days sober from alcohol and that was the right choice. I IMMEDIATELY eliminated so many life problems with that decision. Every time I think about alcohol, I remember the bad from the past and the good from the present. Alcohol is literal poison, on so many levels.
Congratulations on your ongoing sobriety journey.
I'm so happy for you, alcohol consumption destroys lives all around the world but unfortunately the drinking culture is far too ingrained into society
Moderation is key. Drinking in excess and drinking because you’re a addict is nothing like a responsible person who enjoys a drink or two on occasion
@iSimonsez not the right thing to say to someone maintaining their sobriety. Nobody wakes up and decides to become an addict - it happens one day at a time, just like recovery.
Nuh uh
I’ve been blackout drunk hundreds of times and just waking in your own bed is a huge relief.
For real!
I have woke up in too many others peoples houses/beds/couches. Won’t do it anymore!

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.
Congrats on your recovery. Most persons never realizes psilocybin can be used as a miracle medication to save lives. Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death bud, lets be honest here.
Can you help me with the reliable source 🙏. I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Germany. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them
YES very sure of Dr.benfungi. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
100% agree I used to have Psychosis and paranoid thoughts like "people thinking about me talking about me etc. Very odd behavior after getting off Adderall from 7-16. Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Wont ever need to do it again because I'm happy and contempt forever, but I wish more people did this to alter their perception of reality. Would help with healing much trauma

I know this a lighthearted video

I couldn’t believe that I could remember events leading up to
But not the event itself
This video has somewhat given me a little understanding
I've been disgustingly wasted from alcohol many times in my life, but never to the point of blacking out. I can be fully incapacitated, but I'll still be fully aware. Xanax however, is the one thing that has pushed the threshold of me actually losing awareness, while still being up and moving and talking. It happened once and I haven't touched it since. Truly terrifying to wake up somewhere and not know how you got there.
This is fiction.
soooo real
Interesting. I've never had Xanax but drunk alcohol many times, and never had blackouts, even when I once drank to excess as a teenager. Remember everything, including things I'd rather not. 😅 Don't drink to excess kids.
@@Natasha-tu5qs you did fictional things such as drink to excess?
🤣😆
I remember once being in a party with friends (all stupidly drunk), and one of them tried to toss me in the swiming pool, I ended up hitting my arm and my head on the ground instead. We kept drinking and 20 minutes later I passed out, having one of the best nights of sleep of my life lol. When I woke up I felt a pain in my head and the scratches in my arm, yet I COULD NOT REMEMBER ANYTHING about it! When my friends eventually woke up I asked them if I fell on the ground, fought someone or something, they told me what happened and everything came back instantly! It was a very funny and unique experience 🤣🤣🤣

*nt*n B*g*ty. (It's the name of the animator(Sorry, Ted ED) but I decided to censor) is basically the guy to do these kinds of videos!
As a recovering alcoholic, i spent nearly 15 years having blackouts 10 of which where most days an it takes an effect on your relationships life but it is strange how we can still function in some ways but not others.
Kinda wish i had knowledge about all these things or was taught about this stuff an it blows my mind how many countries still don't think alcohol is a problem
Gonna have to watch this again in the morning, far to drunk for this
Oh I love this animator!
The excellent animation is astounding 💚
Please! Post the citations in the videos description. I always enjoy to read on and on.
Thanks for the job!
There is a book titled Alcohol Explained. It's very detailed about what alcohol does in the body. It's fascinating.
How does TED-Ed make learning so cool!!!!
How is it that after a drinking binge and forgetting a lot of what happened, after a while of sobriety memories of the time of drinking resurface? That doesn't seem to correlate with what's being explained here. It's something I've experienced quite vividly.
You just didn't drink enough. ;)

Watching the fun animation of this video is so intoxicating
Love your content! Keep it up!^^
watching this while im drunk, very informative, i'll be sure to remember it
To make a long story short, here's how we learned it in biology class: Short term memory is simply electric. It's just electric signals running around in your brain. Long term memory is chemical. Chemical processes alter the way our brain cells interact permanently and thus providing permanent memory. Alcohol does have an effect on electric signaling, but the effect es rather weak compared to its effect on chemical reactions, thus it has a way higher effect on long term memory.
Yes! @shodell is back!
Really awesome video! I always wondered what exactly when on during blackouts and why we have such a hard time remembering things. I’ve been blackout drunk 3(?) times? Can’t remember the first time (😂), second time I was passed out in my bathroom with 🤮 everywhere (apparently I’d hit my head on the toilet) and drink was spilled on carpet (I also finished a part of a video game apparently 😂), and 3rd time was on a date. Do NOT RECOMMEND it’s not fun plus the hangover headache sucks. Haven’t been blackout drunk in years and hopefully never will again 😰🙅♀️
Headache occurs Coz lack of water.... Drink plenty of it..... If u r not lactose intolerant drink glass of milk before sleep..... U won't get headaches..... Lemme know if it helps
I imagine reading the code and thinking "did a mentally handicapped person write this?" and then look at the Git commits to see it coincided with an alcohol blackout...
@@manpreetdhillon4315 oh yeah I always make sure to do this now when I drink. If I have one glass of alcohol, I drink 2 glasses of water to ensure I stay hydrated. Haven’t had a hangover since 😁
Fictional blackouts were the only ones covered in the video.
the animation style is so endearing
For me it only happened once, "redecorated" my friends Carpet, never again. He retold the whole story and was super forving, brilliant friend. Pink gin is dangerous to me XD. To this day I barely touch it and when I do I do the usual hydration + food / Moderation.
Most of the time i get a buzz but It requires alot for me to have the blackout drunk effect
I never have been able to remember how I was able to get into EDC. I have always been amazed that i was able to get in line, so my pass and ID, go through security, and get to the sets without remembering anything of the first hour or so. Alcohol is crazy.
I must have been watching this video yesterday when i was drunk, since it's in my history, but i don't remember doing it
Wonderfully entertaining animation!
Being in the state of intoxication in fact makes me remember scientific theories I studied in academia over a decade ago. It always feels like the mind is unobstructed, but of course with some distortion to social pragmatics.
A great video after "dry January".
A toast to everyone!
A toast to you. And also Disco Chomper. 2:45
When being younger (teens till mid twenties) it never happened to me except that one time when I was on heavy medication as well (some sort of painkiller injektion for broken leg).
So I always thought people were lying and pretending(?) not to remember and Im still sure that is mostly the case. However, in the meantime I had several blackouts. I remember the first time it happened I thought someone drugged me but when it happened again and again I couldnt deny that it's "just the alcohol".
The scary thing is im totally functional on the outside. People around me think I am not even thaat drunk. Can hold convos (better than sober) even when Im in blackout mode, do complex task, always find home etc...Was also the reason to stop. Not completely stop but no more hardcore drinking.
See the benefit of being blackout drunk is that you can watch this video, and then hours later watch it again like you've never seen it before
Love your work! I totally support a Pea episode and a “reducing food waste” episode
I remember getting my wisdom teeth out, they put me under anesthesia. I cannot for the life of me recall when they administered it, and more importantly, what happened about 45 mins after waking. I had apparently walked to my parents car from the office, went down stairs, opened the car door myself, and sat inside
I’ve attempted to try to have a blackout but I can always seem to recall everything that’s happened while drunk or on weed very vividly while all of my other friends cannot. I’ve always wondered why I can get drunk easily, but never blank out or forget stuff from parties the night before.
I don’t drink often either. But it’s interesting I may have some theories.
I drank alcohol a lot in my lifetime and I never lost any memory from the binge drinking I’ve done the night before. I could recall everything that has happened
then you haven't drank enough 🤣
This video is fiction…
Does anyone else not get blackout drunk no matter how much they drink? Every morning after a night out people come to me like I am the Oracle of Delphi
same, I drink a lot but I always remember everything
You're still young
Try doing 7-10 shots in a hour or so and let's see.... If u r too heavy idk then
Finally. I thought I was the only one. I remember almost everything when I'm sober again and I NEVER get a hangover 😅 I do get drunk af of course but I don't get a hangover or blackouts at all.
@@mailin9092 I’m the same exact way, never had a blackout and the closest I’ve come to a hangover is a bit of dizzyness the next day.

How does alcohol cause blackouts?
Answer: Ethanol (a chemical present in alcoholic drinks) disrupts long-term potentiation (a process partly responsible for the physical changes in the structures of neurons, leading to the strengthening of the connection between neurons and ultimately to the formation of a stable memory) >> potential blackout (likelihood affected by: blood alcohol concentration, alcohol consumption, dehydration level, genetic differences, medications, amount of food consumed, and age)
I often time can’t recall what road i took home the night before
Alcohol used to give me confidence now I have too much control and hesitate to do outgoing stuff and still manage to control my deepest emotions
Can you please upload a video on british phonemes pronunciation
What about the phenomena where you can, for example, drive to work or drive home without remembering the trip, while completely sober? Might be a good future video topic, if it hasn’t been done already.
They do fiction. Fiction that includes that or should the channel switch to doing non-fiction?
Never been this quick

Damn.. I know now what I already experienced..
Amazing
Granny on the unicycle would be a site while sober to be fair.
I wish alcoholism was as punishable by law as drug addiction. I've known so many women with permanent ptsd as a result of an abusive alcoholic. Emotional abuse, verbal abuse, and physical abuse leave life long scars. Hitting rock bottom is a good way as any to inspire a person to change whereas endless sympathy and casually explaining things away only excuses and prolongs bad behavior.
hilarious animations!
Thankfully i don't drink alcohol so I never experience the not so fun side effects like embarrassing moments while being drunk or memory blockouts 😂
I may be the exception to the rule, but no matter how drunk I have gotten, I have never blacked out or forgotten the events that occurred when intoxicated (although I wish I had). Nonetheless, interesting video.
I honestly thought that blackouts were false, I've lost inhibitions, passed out, been belligirent, vomited etc. but never lost memories of events when intoxicated, but others I've known claim that they have. Just assumed it was a means to not take responsibility for your actions, nice to know that this is actually a reality for people.
I have a very easy time blacking out, can go from feeling totally under control to waking up confused in bed out of nowhere. It happens so often it's to the point it's annoying and I feel like a burden to friends. At the same time I love the feeling of being drunk and want to end up in the "Goldilocks zone" where I'm perfectly drunk haha.
I'd imagine that alcohol at a certain concentration will interfere with the transcription of FOSB. Which is involved with memory recording.
While the first quote from Shakespeare seems fitting in this context.. the truth of the line "O God, that men should put an enemy in their mouths, to steal away their brains!" is:
Act II Scene III Cassio says this to Iago when he is talking about his regret in stabbing Montano. He means that it is a fault of men that they mouth off and get themselves in trouble because they don't use their brain. "O God, that men should put an enemy in their mouths, to steal away their brains!"
My second time drinking (as a teen) I went overboard by accident, to where I essentially passed out… but the moments I was awake and not lying on the floor in my own puke, I remember everything quite clearly.
My friend Osmer came and scooped me up, Heidi got me a puke bucket and a blanket, and my best friend Zack drove me home and got me some food from Waffle House…
Great friends, wild memories.
Wow that's awesome I'm happy you have experienced happening to you you have some good friends I actually care about you give you food give you a blanket to cover you up and take you home

As a functional alcoholic with PTSD, I can tell you how it works. I'd lose my job if I got on psyche meds or drugs. Alcohol is the only escape. I either don't dream or rarely recall dreams when I'm drunk. It's an OTC med that my employer doesn't track. It's legal in all 50 states. As long as I'm not drunk on duty, I'm good to go. This is how many first responders end up as alcoholics. Alcohol destroys the memory over time. The catch is, you forget both the good and the bad things.
And you haven't considered going to therapy for your PTSD? I understand why you'd be skeptical about meds (SSRI's are kinda scary tbh), but therapy's probably a better alternative to what you've got going on.
Though, if therapy isn't a good option due to finances/stuff like that, you could always try and write down your good memories/keep a journal so you'll still have some of them. Honestly, do that regardless. Helps you remember random things :]
My father is consistently intoxicated, being drunk nearly every day. Perhaps he is sober for a day or two per week. Due to his frequent drinking, his cognitive abilities seem impaired. He struggles to recall where he placed his glasses or phone, and at times, he can't even remember his recent whereabouts (*this is concerning). He is unable to engage in a coherent argument when advised to reduce his heavy alcohol consumption. With minimal physical activity, his organs may be deteriorating gradually.
I share this to urge individuals to reconsider heavy reliance on alcohol.

This video omits a CRUCIAL detail. How did the subjects get drunk? Were they already drunk when the scientist asked them to participate? Only if that is true is the study ethical. I sure hope nobody is conducting a study where part of the instructions is to get blackout drunk.
Is it still ethical if all the subjects consented to getting drunk though?

I can not for the life of me understand why it is anyone would willingly subject themselves to this.
Came here to learn more, maybe assuage my own concerns of the matter, walking out with those concerns having been justified and reinforced.
Just last night, my daughter and son in law told my husband some wonderful news: they closed on their first house. He drinks a lot, and was high fiving them, saying congratulations, etc.. Today, I gave him a piece of paper to sign for $ we are giving them toward the down payment, and he said "did they get a house?" Sigh. I hate alcohol so much and am so glad I quit. Seeing him get sloppy drunk, mean, or silly, has just turned me off to it.

I wouldn't say all alcoholic beverages make me blackout but vodka and tequila does, every single time.... I won't even do 1 shot of vodka or tequila when I would go out. 😂
Now I don't drink anymore because I found medical cannabis edibles and RSO.... You can even make tinctures by putting cannabis flower in a small bottle of high proof alcohol and it makes amazing mixed drinks. You can even make it w/ CBD tinctures so it dulls the intensity of the THC.... 😊👍❤

I'm no alcoholic, but I can assure you, that whatever's in that drink is so overwhelming to the point where you have this mental block and physical blackout. Somehow it's getting increasingly difficult for people to actually stay sober at all times.
By spilling alcohol on the breaker box, obviously
I never really liked alcohol as I think it ruins the taste of the drink, making it taste like strong cleaning product or something. The scent stings my nose.
I can tell you exactly how it happens, you hit the 20th drink (after 10 you decided you arent going to work tmrw so it doesn't matter how much you have now) and youre already pretty tired, your eyelids just start closing then you wake up some amount of time later
