- Take a look at the science of how addictive drugs affect your body and why substance addiction can be so difficult to treat.
--
As of 2021, more than 36 million people were estimated to be experiencing substance use disorder. This condition spans a spectrum of patterned drug use that causes issues in a person’s life, with substance addiction at the more severe end. Why are some people more susceptible to addiction, and why can it be so difficult to treat? Judy Grisel takes a look at how addictive drugs affect the body.

I am a recovering alcoholic that drank for 20 years. By the end I was jobless, homeless in my car, and out of options. Luckily, I got help, went to treatment, and am now 13 months sober. To anyone struggling you are not alone and people can and will help you. If I could give anyone advice, if you are detoxing from alcohol go to a hospital or detox center. People can die from alcohol withdrawal, I almost did because I just detoxed by myself. Do not do this, get a professional. Addiction is terrible but only quit if you really want to. The choice is yours, no one can make you and don't quit for someone else. Quit for you.
That's so great! Keep it up!
Makes sense why you were drinking. The amount of pain Arsenal put you through.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.
Congrats on your recovery. Most persons never realizes psilocybin can be used as a miracle medication to save lives. Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death bud, lets be honest here.
Can you help me with the reliable source 🙏. I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Australia. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them.
Yes very sure of Dr.benfungi. They helped me too to overcome my anxieties and get to the root of much of my "mental Illness" which is all rooted from trauma, abusive relationship and a chaotic childhood and addiction. Shrooms made a huge huge impact to why am totally free today.
Congrats! I'm really happy for you that your wife decided to help you. I always admire those who beat their addiction. Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

I thought this was what the video was going to be about. Not addiction to drugs, but addiction to social media and video games and what not
@@squid_cakevideo games are not addictive. It can become a bad habit, it can become an extreme habit, but addiction is a specific process in the brain that video games can’t cause like drugs can. This is probably also true for posting/consuming social media, but I know it’s true for video games

It's good to know why we become addicted to something and how hard it is to overcome addiction so that we can make better decisions before trying anything.

as a recovered addict, this video doesnt adress the behavior part, i recommend ppl to find community and support around them, and go do AA or NA meetings, so far this has been the only thing helping me stay sober, addicts need to talk their emotion, thats the root of our issues
That my friend, one of how brain releases dopamine normally, relationship especially defined with words "love" will released more dopamine. That's why family and close friends are tremendous help for recovering addicts.
@@alistair981 That's not how dopamine works. Dopamine is not directly caused by bonding. Dopamine is a motivational salience, which means it controlls a person's motivation to do something.

@noorsabah1766 I know I'm trying to do that as well. Basically I'm attempting to get back to some old hobbies I did in the past like drawing. While also trying to promote the tech I have in a more positive use.
I am the same way.
I wish everyone struggling with addiction a good recovery. I want to remind you, that you're not a failure, or a bad person, or not strong enough to resist addiction. Please surround yourself with the support you deserve, treat yourself kindly, and let yourself recover at your own pace. Even if you relapse after a period of resistance, you managed to last for even that amount. That means you could last for more. Don't doubt yourself or your worth as a person. Everything's going to be okay. I promise.
Thanks buddy ❤

@ahmaddodo4270 Yea, I'm not watching that. I don't care that much.
Understanding the reasons behind addiction and the challenges of overcoming it is crucial for making informed decisions before doing with anything.
This video is really educative. It tells us addiction is horrible: even people with good willpower can resign themselves to drugs and give up all the things that originally appeal to them, which oftentimes means someone will begin to commit a crime.
Overshare my dad who has since passed, was an addict. It really shaped the way I view drugs or alcohol cuz I know genetically I am prolly predisposed to addiction, so I need to take caution and it is the opposite for friends and even family which feels a bit isolating. I have come to the realization that addiction is totally a disease and thus it requires treatment and counseling but growing up it didn't compute since I didn't have a proper relationship with my dad.

Thanks you for making this video. I'm writing a story where "dark magic" serves as a metaphor for non-renewable resources and substance abuse. It's good to know how all these drugs mess with your head so that the characters I write are more believable. Unlike most people, I actually listened to (and was terrified of) all those health lectures that we had in school.
That sounds like a really cool story idea! I'd love to read it. I unfortunately did not listen to the health lectures, although I'd always planned to, since my dad was an alcoholic and I swore I'd never be like him. But when I first tried alcohol and found it completely cured my terrible social anxiety, I was hooked. Thankfully I've overcome that addiction and been sober for a long time now!
Scary how it's similar to the social media addiction or nomophobia

After smoking cigarettes for 16 years, one day i just decided i didn't want to any more. After drinking alcohol, regularly and excessively, I found out that my kidneys were nearing death and I quit drinking with no problems. I've tried other drugs in the past just to see and I've never gotten addicted to anything. I really think i should be studied.
the best thing about addictions is that, it presents two choices in front of oneself, weither be wise or go straight nto the dumpster. ITS A RISK, WITH A LOT OF POTENTIAL!!
0:40 Although coffee isn't a drug or bad, if you use it very often your body will actually make more adenosine receptors to tell you that you're tired. The extra adenosine receptors will go away after some time if you don't drink any more coffee.
i almost have quit my addiction but i know i have to be careful because getting addicted again is so fast and will be harder to quit for the second time.
There is always hope! And it gets better/easier with time ;-)
Becoming an addict is an easy thing. Getting rid of that any addiction on the other hand is really hard. It requires time and effort.
just realize and stress now and put all your fate and responsibility on your future-self; on your momentary decisions to weither you will quit or not. DONT TAKE TOO MUCH STRESS RIGHT NOW, ANY MOTIVATIONS YOU HAVE RIGHT NOW, AS PER FACT IT WILL GONNA COLAPSE.
Stopped playing video games for a year now and the withdrawal is pretty hard to overcome, hope I can countine with this though.
I hope you can too! It gets easier with time.

Can you please explain?
the most important tip, is to not go attempting quitting with so much effort of yours, but somehow let it go involuntarily.

Addiction is preventable. Nobody can fibd a direct cure. Instead, we impose restrictive and preventive measures to abstain any type of addiction.
Addiction is not preventable. It's a very easy trap to fall into and you don't know you're there until you're there.
You want to try Prohibition again ?? 😂 hahahaha
What "causes" addiction is a complex interplay of genetics, environment, and personality. You can't encapsulate what causes addiction in a 6 min video. This is the neurological reaction to the exposure to drugs, and an explanation of tolerance/dependence, not the cause of addiction.
Im addicted to watching Ted-ed videos 😅

You should have also said about technology addiction, many suffer from this in silence without getting proper treatment. Furthermore, the number of sufferers is getting bigger day by day
Is our Genes too an addict? An obsessive compulsive disorder? Pruned by immune system to keep in check? An external "Diction" is society too in a way. As it is said - Independence is consciously being (understand) in Dependency, be it for anything. That's appreciating social links and needs to survive & thrive. We do have Unconscious Dependency too, most of our behaviour from instincts to even thoughts. Fighting these Dictions may not be of much success, rather, becoming aware of them might be a great step ahead. This awareness reduces their intensity of craving and along with targeted & supportive measures, we can allow them to be educed out. Intention, acceptance and gentle taming of the wilderness they say is Living, not just in addiction but in all dictions as well. That help us out of Fiction.

My father is addicted to smoking,no matter what we do or say to him he doesnt want to stop smoking exccessively, how to stop a person like this?
Fortunately I'm not addicted to any substance 😅
let it be known addiction of substances isnt the only one ; masturbation , fast food and even daily things like exercise are bad . let it be known too much of anything can kill you
It’s almost like the solution is to make us
A) less adaptable to new substances that are in our body
B) more sensitive to the drugs so that a little goes a long way
That way we could all use it in small doses and get the same results with no tolerance over time if we chose to use it. Honestly, if drugs weren’t so devastating and addictive, it would be a lot easier to make them legal and then regulate their use and sale. It could single-handedly end the war on drugs and the devastating impact addiction has on individuals and their communities.
interesting! We'd have to change who we are at a fundamental level. Including personality...
This video was helpful in ways but, I DO NOT think that “groups” work.
Folks DO NEED a community BUT, folks always end up reverting back.
One just had to know their limits and, go to bed (alone) when they reach them.
Serious question - I have the same problems with games, but not grinding or "taking the first place and being the best" - instead I crave lore and stories and well written worlds.
