so good.
Thank you brother ✌🏻
you ever notice how titles right now are mostly geared to make you feel like you're not enough?
stop doing this. 10 things you're doing wrong. how to be [insert something you're not]. the one tool that changed (of course) everything.
it truly is a back and forth like that. thank you for being honest and talking openly about this. we all need it. what are we all doing if it's not honest?
Thanks Collin ✌🏻
So proud of you dude, this is awesome work 👏
@@danielschiffer thanks Danny 🙏🏻
"No one is gonna give me the oppurtunites so I'm just gonna go out and create them myself". Beautiful message, beautiful video
LOOOOL the phone call is so real "oh they flew you out? that's awesome!" proceeds to cry myself to sleep hahaha
It's all too real 😅
this was relateable on so many levels bro, you have no idea. the emotional undercurrent hit me like a truck. the many voices, the good days, the bad days. with me, its a desire to actually be the YT content creator as well as the DP and feeling like I'm never good enough for either. thanks for making this. (p.s. I love so many of your shots. great composition)
Glad it resonates, it’s something I struggle with daily 🙃
I almost cried when watching the ending, thank you for the film.
Wow glad it resonates!
You're describing the artists journey here, It is completely normal. It will be joined by imposter syndrome once the recognition grows. Ill tell you what i heard from Coppola when I first entered the film work force: "You dont need a studio and a bunch of semitrucks full of gear to make your career. You need a van, ten friends, and a camera". This was around 15 years, and still applies today. Enjoy the journey. Youre a self starter and most dont have that, so youre in a good position for success
that’s facts
I'm glad you shared this, beautiful work Matt - this definitely made me feel something! Also the negative Matt cuts deep!
hahaha negative Matt cuts deeep
Really nice! "I just want to make cool shit..!"
That's how I will, from now on, shut down both of those two internal voices.
Great audio, great cuts, great energy, great pace and shots overall.
Also, a proof that you can make an authentic, good looking, meaningful story with good message - anywhere, anytime!!
@@JakeMazurski thank you Jake!
Dude this video is fucking amazing, the editing, the color grading, the framing , omg the shots r so beautiful and the whole idea with the different versions of you saying different things was brilliant. You are a filmmaker, what I just watched was a film!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
"I don't care, I just want to make cool shit" - I love it.
🙏🏻
Watching this connects so deeply with me. I am at a point in my life whether choosing to work another part time job i don’t care about or take a leap into the overwhelming ocean of content creation
Follow the heart
Beautifully made and so well stated Matt! There’s absolutely no need to put yourself into any neat little box or label. Just keep being your honest authentic self and the right audience will always resonate with your message. Peace and love brother!
Thanks Kiki 🙏🏻
This was an absolute masterpiece, visually, story telling, and hitting me right in the feels, and hit the nail on the head on how I've been feeling trying to navigate this industry. Thank you for this Matt, honestly, the vulnerability shown was moving! And so god damn relatable.
Thank you 🙏🏻

It's been a while since I've resonated so much with a video. Thank you for reminding how okay it is to go through these daily motions.
Glad it resonates ✌🏻
Great piece Matt! This is all facts. Pave the road for yourself, no one else is going to do it.
@@samrtaylor thank you Sam, exactly!!
Incredible work Matt, wow. The dialogue amongst the three of you...the compositions, the music, the lighting💡! I'm absolutely inspired. 🤌🏾 What a film. 🎬

You don’t know how happy I got when I saw Darius Khondji‘s book
Read it front to back!
Absolutely fantastic work and so so inspiring!! I am in the same situation as you more or less and I am sure most of us feel this way some way or another. But never forget that doubt is a part of any journey to become your best self. Trust that you got this. Even on the doubtful days. Much love
Amen! Thanks Eirik ✌🏻
i am a brazilian filmmaker and i deeply identify with the feelings you express in this video. so vulnerable and yet so precise. even though i'm not a regular content creator, i feel that, due to the lack of opportunities to show my value as a director in the market, i am constantly disqualified, as if i always hear, "you are not a real director." additionally, i don't have influential relatives to put me in the right places, nor the financial means to study at prestigious institutions, which keeps me from making important connections. but my passion for filmmaking is too strong to give up.
in fact, your series of "how to create a spec project" videos has helped me a lot in organizing how to create my own and pursue my goals. thanks for that.
now, i've decided to create my own opportunities too and start my youtube channel as well :)
@@juliasolpin-v7p your comment made my day. Don’t let that stuff define you, keep making stuff with whatever your limitations are, I believe in you 🙏🏻

Matt just keep making cool shit! Do it for yourself and make it personal and from the heart. Authentic work always resonates over time, ALWAYS!
Along this path you will make connections with other like-minded folks that share your passion for filmmaking. Opportunities will present themselves...they always do...

@@cammackey true!
Bingo

Inspiring but real, I'm learning to embrace the idea of creating your own value - film is eternal and has no defining point / factor and you are as good as your own imagination / limitations. This video like all your other works is amazing and provoking thanks for sharing!
Agreed!
Well said, keep going Matt!
@@zeeshandhanani thank you 🙏🏻
Loved this Matt.
"A good player works hard to win the game everyone else is playing. A great player creates a new game that favours their strengths and avoids their weaknesses."
It's all about creating your own game in your own world. Be true to yourself and forget about the noise. If people joins and appreciates your work along the way, great. If not, at least you were true to yourself. YOUR WAY IS THE ONLY WAY. And that is the only thing that matters in life my fren!
That's a great quote, thank you brother ✌🏻
to be honest, for long time I didn't find a cinematic video this good. keep going!
Thank you
Let's stay strong film community
Yup
Titles limit our vision, and we often find ourselves trying to fit on those rather than expanding ourselves. Just do cool shit, I love the meessage

Describe these feelings so well Matt🙌🏻🙌🏻 so inspiring makes me want to create more meaningful videos like this
Thanks Ryder ✌🏻
This is one of the best videos i've watched on youtube as a filmmaker in our age and time i can relate
Wow thank you
"i just wanna make cool shit". You said it there brother. I really appreciate this. As someone who's not exactly where they "planned" on being career-wise and constantlys fight back thoughts of imposter syndrome and giving up, this CZcams thing all together, this is extremely inspiring. Thanks
Hell yeah 🙏🏻
Beautiful storytelling and very true words spoken. No need to lament over existing paths. Find the joy creating your own. Your new path may overlap with the existing ones, or those existing ones may be overgrown as you carved your own.
Agreed!
You're doing amazing watched a good film after a while
Thank you ✌🏻
@MattAitia thank you. Very relatable. Those "Director Friends" are struggling just like this. It's a vicious cycle. For example, I am dealing with music clients that have no budget but want everything and the champaign. Love your videos. Can't wait to see what you make on bigger budgets.
Thanks bro!
The inner monologues of many presented so well. Loved all the choices you made in this one. Specially the music!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Needed to see this! Thanks for posting. Dude at least you're making this cool shit! I'm out there feeling exactly the same but only doing payed stuff that does nothing for me. Been wanting to start doing something mine for some time now but it's so hard. So give yourself credit, you're definitely DOING.
You can do it 🙏🏻
So much inspiration I needed right now, keep pushing and “the world is yours” always!
Thank you 🙏🏻

Amazing stuff dude! Didn't know any other DoP that felt like this.

Literally perfect timing, as Im sitting here thinking if to be a "CZcamsr" or "Film Maker" and putting too much thought into these labels. You got it down perfectly, "I just want to make cool shit" Great video bro
Now go make it!
The ending gets me everytime, keep it up 🫰
Thank you!

Thank you 🙏🏻
Yeah... I feel this alot... thanks for making the video bro
I gotchu ✌🏻
Well done. Just... well done.
Thanks Andrew ✌🏻
Yep! Exactly and remember, you're 100% right because in the end, if you're creating, then you're winning.
The majority of the industry is full of worker bees, not creators. They are told what to do by someone else. They create to put money in their bank account, it's job. People who take their creativity and turn it into content, are the people who when the chairs are all gone, survive. Just look at the mass exodus of people from Hollywood over the last 2 years, simply due to union contract negotiations. Many of my friends are simply quitting the industry entirely, they've given up. They aren't going to make CZcams videos to support their family, they're going to get a job out of the industry and probably never once go back to it. So as a young person, doing this as a passion, you are actually way ahead of them. Get a good job to pay the bills that enables you to grow financially and take that money to create content. Guarantee you, this channel within this decade, will grant you more views/eyes than being a "DP" on some lame low budget features. Heck, people will know your name too! Anyway, good work and stick with it, this is the new way of making content and you're way ahead of the curveball.
Wow thank you. Times are definitely changing and to see this many people in the comments have similar input is reassuring
Love this

Hello Matt!
Unfortunately, we are all in different corners of the world. I am writing from Turkey, for example. But I am very pleased to meet you.
This video was the first one of yours that I watched, and it felt great. I am now your follower. And I believe the reason is your courage to share a piece of yourself honestly with the world instead of just sharing a lot of information about filmmaking.
Because I can find endless color grading tutorials on the internet, but I can't find a film that gives me an idea to get up and create while I am in no state to enter the filmmaking process I have been preparing for years as a result of a 3-year depression.
Remember, even though we are not with you, we are here, and we are your audience.
Thank you for creating.

Damn. Don't sweat it man.
I work in the industry in LA. I know a bunch of directors & DP's working with 30+ person crews, shooting Alexa 35/LF, getting 6 figure budgets, shooting for big name clients and artists... and a let me tell you: a lot of them feel the same way you do.
Music video sets & labels can be pretty shitty. Commercial clients & treatments are soul sucking. Everything is super corporate & advertising based.
At the end of the day, all these creatives just want to tell meaningful stories, and a lot of them feel stuck in the capitalist grind. Many of them look to narrative shorts as an outlet. So you're actually in the same boat, as someone looking to tell stories through the filmmaking art form. Just keep making stuff & telling stories.
My advice is to work with friends as much as possible. Filmmaking is a collaborative art form. Being with your filmmaking family on set is a wonderful environment. Don't isolate yourself.
Good luck!
the grass is always greener
This was beautiful!

I think the problem with following the gax path is that now almost all popular video creators are trying to copy a certain style and narrative in one way or another. This is always read so strongly that over time you stop believing it. It's just that my observations may have nothing to do with reality. I just want to see something fresh and crazy, truly coming from a person and all his oddities
Man wow , the phone call scene was so relatable . My life in a nutshell. Great video. Sub
yup 😅
"They're bringing him too?" LOL! Have you ever read "Act One" ? An interesting part is when Moss Hart is sending his screenplays out to every agent he can find. One agent calls and says, "have you tried writing comedy." Hart says he is offended to the core. Comedy! His idol is Eugene O'Neil, someone like that. Anyway, he is teamed up with George S. Kaufmann and the rest is history.
You need a good writing partner. Let the rest be history.
