    I've been to places in northern Canada where we were so far from any city that the night sky was dark and crisp. we laid on a hill looking into space and it felt like we were on the nose of a spaceship. it gave me a sense of what it must look like in space even though I know we were only seeing a fraction of what was out there. but as compared to the city in southern Canada, we saw a thousand times more stars up there with the naked eye, full of color and depth that we only see in images.

      My friends and I have had similar experiences. One night we laid on a hill looking up into space, and saw attack ships off the shoulder of Orion. We saw c-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhauser Gate! Then it started to rain.

      I was in the Navy 4 years. Being out at sea at night & usually hundreds & hundreds of miles from the nearest source of light pollution, the one thing that never got old was going out on deck on clear nights just to look at the universe. Plus we had two tripod mounted high powered binoculars that you could easily see dozens of other galaxies with. It's really mind blowing that many people go through life never seeing what's in the night sky except maybe in astronomy photos. Seeing the stars at night without light pollution from cities blocking everything out should be one of those things that everyone should do at least once in their lives, like seeing the ocean. It's a truly mystical, magical experience.

    Please keep posting on this channel regularly because I absolutely love astronomy and space exploration! CZcams has an endless variety of channels that cover this subject, but it’s hard to find one that’s on this level of quality and expertise. I am amazed by the amount of knowledge that Simon must possess after hosting videos on the dozens of channels he has created over the years. Factboi is the perfect nickname for him! I bet he’s a great person to have on a trivia team, or a contestant on Jeopardy! The board game Trivial Pursuit would hardly be a challenge for Simon… No matter what subject, topic, or category, he will know vastly more than anyone else could dream of

    Things like rouge planets and the star that was found to be racing through the galaxy at over a million miles per hour are the most terrifying concepts to me. The astronomical community has failed to detect celestial objects that were traveling uncomfortably close to the earth until they had gotten extremely close, which doesn’t give me a lot of confidence in the chances of detection of extinction level collisions in time to intercept them with a spacecraft like the one we crashed into a small asteroid years ago. The success of that mission is comforting, but it only works if we see them coming in time to launch an interceptor craft. It’s a nightmare that I have more than I’d like

    • @Empiro3
      @Empiro3 Před 7 měsíci +5

      I've thought about that as well. How would they even view the universe when all they know is a dark ocean and the ground beneath and the ice above? They probably wouldn't even have eyes as we know it, since they evolved on a world with no light at all.
      Drilling through kilometers of ice to reach the surface, would probably be the greatest undertaking they've ever done.
      I actually think that if they had the technology to drill through so much ice, they'd probably have a good understanding of a lot of things. They'd likely know of electromagnetic waves and light, and probably would have developed sensors to detect it. They likely would have developed fusion or fission in order to power their civilization, and used geothermal energy before that. If they did develop nuclear physics, then they probably would know about neutrinos, and if they knew that, then they'd probably be able to detect the neutrinos that travel through the universe, easily penetrating the ice. They'd probably also detect bursts of neutrinos from supernovae, and understand that there was *something* that was causing huge nuclear reactions out there.

    It would be interesting to know if planets that are rocky are more likely to become “rogue” than all the gaseous giants. It would seem that the baseballs revolving around the bowling ball would have more staying power than the small pebbles closer to stars. I can see Mars or Pluto getting ejected before Jupiter ever could

    • @Jellyman1129
      @Jellyman1129 Před 7 měsíci

      That’s a great question. We do know that in our solar system, many small planets formed around 10 AU from the Sun, but got scattered into the outer solar system once the giant planets got big. This explains why the outer planets (the planets beyond Neptune) have very eccentric orbits.
      For rogue planets, it’ll be interesting to see what data we find. We already found dozens of rogue binary gas giants in the Orion Nebula, so anything is possible! 🪐

    Interesting that when the IAU created their distinction between “planets” and “dwarf planets”, not only did they not decide what the “planet” category will ultimately be called, they also limited both categories to objects in orbit around the sun. Meaning a rogue object (or an object revolving around another star) has no means of qualifying as a “dwarf planet”. The object might be smaller than Ceres, yet still be a full fledged “rogue planet”. The whole concept was poorly planned and poorly executed. The distinctions are dependent on the nebular hypothesis, which is generally dependent on the Big Bang, and the Big Bang is dependent on Einstein’s specific and general relativity, both of which have been shown to be false.
    The moral of the story is that it is best not to create definitions dependent on hypotheses. At present, so many in the scientific community are so deeply invested in Einstein that it might take many decades for the consensus to admit they made a mistake. And, over fifteen years later, no one has any idea if there will ever be such a thing as a “dwarf rogue planet”.
