    Anyone interested how this works:
    The LCD has the following parts (in order from front to back): vertical polarizer, glass substrate electrode, liquid crystal, another glass substrate electrode, horizontal polarizer and the backlight (white fluorescent tubes or LEDs).
    This is how an LCD works: First, light coming from the tubes or LEDs are polarized horizontally by the horizontal polarizer, and then it passes through the glass substrate and then to the liquid crystals (which will do something magical as I will discuss later), passes to another glass substrate and then to a vertical polarizer. Now, since light has been horizontally polarized by the first polarizer from the back, there should be no light that will pass through the vertical polarizer. Now, remember the liquid crystal? The liquid crystals bend light from 0 to 90 degrees (black to full white, respectively) depending on the voltage applied from the glass substrates (which sandwiches the crystals), the substrate contains individual shapes that defines a pixel. If the crystal bends light to a 90 degrees, the subpixel (R, G or B) will be illuminated to the fullest, if the crystal doesn't bend the light (0 degrees) it will just be black. In other words, the angle determines the intensity of the light.
    Removing the vertical polarizer will allow any orientation of light to pass through at the front end, which is why you'll see white. With a properly oriented polarizer, you can again filter only the vertically-oriented light to pass through.

      Adrian T It depends on what type of polarized filters you use, some are linear like the ones used in LCDs, and some are circular like your 3D glasses. The circular polarizers filters out light which are either polarized clockwise or anti-clockwise. So, yes linearly polarized light on circularly polarized filters will not work.

    I understand that this is not a free thing to do but for a channel with over 2M subscribers I think it is feasible to redo the video with a different monitor that actually worked in the end. Now this was just like "hey see, it worked! for a second.. but it worked!" - kind of embarrassing..
    I mean it doesn't have to be a 4K 30" Monitor or something, but a stupid old monitor from craigslist (like Luke mentioned) would have been only a few dollars probably.

    • @bigoljoe1829
      @bigoljoe1829 Před 8 lety +11

      +pcfreak1992 Its funny how people assume you tubers are rolling in the dough, and have money to just burn. Its also funny how people make judgments on a video with made up criteria. "Would have been only a few dollars probably" "probably" meaning you don't know. So stow it. Luke already said they got that monitor from craigslist and it was $30. That is no guarantee they'd be able to find another one in that price range, and no guarantee it would even work. There is absolutely NO REASON for them to literally throw money away on yet another monitor they're just going to trash anyway. Thats stupid as fuck. LinusMediaGroup has several employees they need to pay, and they can't do that if they're throwing money away on stupid shit for no real good reason.

    • @MrQurutin
      @MrQurutin Před 8 lety +4

      +pcfreak1992 It's not about the price of the monitor but the price of the time of an employee. Luke has to be paid, so does whoever happens to be filming and editing. In the time it would take to redo everything they can probably do another video about entirely different subject and thats what matters from the business point of view.

    I known this is an old video, and it may have been said before, but when removing a bezel, because of the way the plastic clips work that hold it in place, if you grab the edge of the bezel that touches the screen towards the center of one of the 4 sides and pull slightly away from the screen and towards the outside edge of the screen, they should release much easier, I usually pop the 4 long edges, then wiggle out the corners, I worked in a repair shop for years and took tons of lcds and laptops apart. Hope this helps someone.

    goobegone is basically paint thinner (mineral spirits or white spirits for UK people). Basically you have water base glues that come off with alcohol, oil base glues that come off with mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. Mineral spirits is pretty mild. It will harm plastic if you leave it on a long time but is usually ok for wiping off glue. Lacquer thinner is a lot stronger and can melt some plastics.
    Cellulose based glues and cyanoacrylate come off with acetone.

  • @ChrisTopher-wl6pd
    @ChrisTopher-wl6pd Před 6 lety +2

    Actually I think what happened was some of your Goo gone soaked in and shorted out either some of the LEDs or one of the CCFLs on the top or bottom of the screen. If one shorts out and the board detects not enough voltage being used for the lights it will perform exactly like that. Definitely don’t pour liquid on the screen 😬 it’s also not impossible to buy new CCFLs...

    The inverter died due to chemical spilling into the housing. This is obvious when you stand the monitor up there are three streams of drippings running out of the top ventilation. I do want to add note that yes this project is awesome and thank you.

    Will a good pair of polarised sunglasses not just do the same or is the polarisation of the screen filter a lot stronger than can be brought I know some fishing glasses have a strong polarisation to see through surface glare ad it's a lot less work

    3 more tools to add:
    1. Goo be gone (obvious)
    2. An X-ACTO knife to cut screen
    3. Heat gun for the glue.
