Kingdom Hearts 3: ReMind DLC Review - The Final Verdict

  • So with all that’s been added, does Re:Mind make Kingdom Hearts 3 a better game? Does it shift it closer towards the lofty heights of the first two games? Well, yes and no. For many players, this pack will only offer a lopsided four-hour story mode. And while it may have cool ideas from time to time, this story DLC isn’t the amazing exclamation point that Kingdom Hearts 3 really could have used at its end.
But for players who are looking to dive into the mechanics of this game and really buckle down against some of the toughest fights that the series has seen yet, this DLC more than delivers. While the content on offer is certainly divisive, the amount of replayability offered by the Black Codes, paired with the grueling difficulty of the Limit Cut bosses, will be deeply satisfying for a very select group of fans, and will keep them playing until the next entry in the Kingdom Hearts franchise.

Very accurate review. This dlc is mainly for 2 groups of people.
    1) day 1 kingdom hearts hyper fans that eat up Kh storylines

@@PhilipMller I think if you are only interested in the remind scenario just skip the DLC and watch those scenes on youtube, but if you want a serious combat challenge and more replay value for kh3 overall the dlc is definitely worth $30. The premium menu is the most underrated part of DLC because it offers so much customization to the difficulty. You can make any difficulty as hard or as easy as want for a playthrough which is a genius idea.
The data battles and secret episode are some of the best-designed bosses they are challenging regardless of the difficulty and cannot be cheezed which is a criticism I have of the kh2fm additional bosses. You can exploit combat to make them relatively easy. Just summon stitch or use negative combo exploit and there's very little challenge

At the Secret Episode now-which is not actually an episode (like BBS’s Secret Ep), just a boss lol
I enjoyed Re Mind a lot, but having seen all it has to offer, I do not think the content justifies $30. I do, however, think the $10 orchestra video is a great deal and I can’t believe they are refusing to sell it individually.
My biggest frustration is really with the 1.09 patch. Aside from the 2 keyblades and 6 new abilities-which vastly improve the gameplay-the main game has not been touched. Some skybox and lighting tweaks. And a nice new Shimomura arrangement of “Destati” which plays during a cutscene (and cruelly teases us that Yoko might actually have gone back and composed true KH-style final boss music).
It’s clear-and understandable-that Nomura chose to just admit defeat and throw his hands up rather than spend unnecessary effort expanding the main scenario whose big story moments we’d already experienced. I guess a Colosseum, Twilight Town or Radiant Garden wouldn’t have served any purpose when we’d just be retreading the same ground. But it was wrong of them to refer to it as a “main story update”-it is not.
So he uses Re Mind’s story to provide the Keyblade War and final boss he obviously originally intended. Even though it’s presented as Sora time-traveling post-game again, there is nothing (except Kairi) that could not have been part of the “main story update.”
The Limitcut bosses are excellent, but will only appeal to the pain-loving niche of KH’s player base. The Secret Boss (again, not an “episode”) is locked behind them. So if players aren’t beating all 13 data fights, all they get is the 4-5 hour story, most of which is a 1:1 rehash of the main scenario.
Loved it, will replay it, but wait for a price drop or physical “KH3 Royal” release.

** (An honest, unbiased, and unpaid for reviewer) Score: 5/10
Is it worth buying? Short answer, No. I REALLY wish the Re:Mind DLC would have added to and smoothed out the overall story and pacing of Kingdom Hearts III; fully explained the already present loose threads and plot holes; added additional substantive dialogue, truly immersive and meaningful playable characters, story arcs, and worlds; and just overall improved upon the game by making a legitimate Kingdom Hearts III 2.0 Final Mix.
But instead of fixing the massive pacing issues and plot problems in Kingdom Hearts III; Tetsuya Nomura, Square Enix, and Disney simply decide to take the easy way out by only adding-on to the end-game content. What you get in the DLC are the Oathkeeper and Oblivion Keyblades w/ associated forms, a handful of additional short cut scenes, "remastered" HD sprites, allowing you to briefly play as some of the additional characters in the scripted battles of the Battle for the Keyblade Graveyard (only Riku, Aqua, Roxas, Kairi, and King Mickey), and by making data recreations of everything. Want to know what is the easiest and cheapest cop-out to horrible directing and story-boarding that basically left all the characters and main protagonist and antagonist dead? -- Bring them back as "data versions" and throw them in optional Data Scape battles. You're paying $29.99 for at minimum, 30 minutes of additional end-game content, and at maximum, 3 hours of additional end-game content. FYI - Half of Jason Dohring's (Terra's) dialogue lines sound like they were phoned-in and the voice acting of Aerith (Andrea Bowen) is still godawful.
The only thing I will commend the development team on is the Armored Xehanort and Yozora's fight scenes being phenomenally scripted, animated, and decently challenging. Even though it's highly apparent that Nomura simply couldn't "let it go" and half-way through KH3's production, sharply turned the entire game into a story leading up to the remake (Verum Rex) of his Final Fantasy verses 13 game that got scraped and rewritten. -- SPOILERS -- Yozora IS FF v 13's Noctis. The true secret ending scene of KH3 is a scene for scene replica of the original FFv13 tailor with the new Yozora character model in Noctis's place. #KingdomHeatsIII #KH3 #ReMind #DLC #SquareEnix

"a very select group" indeed. when they mentioned that there would be "story updates" I'd hoped we'd finally see a playable Hollow Bastion again not just some different lighting in a few cut scenes. I mean, the Scala area was cool and they clearly put a lot of care into it, but it ended up feeling like a nice-looking wasteland. For me, the biggest draw of Kingdom Hearts was always the worlds, and even though most of the worlds we got were great, it just felt like there were too few of them. personally I would have rather had another awesome world to explore instead of the Keyblade Graveyard. At the end of the day, it was just a dull landscape with a boss rush in it. The heartless battle at the beginning was amazing, but everything after that was just meh...

@BHowardify I can't seem to think of anything that was "actually" retconned except for the scene with Donald and Goofy in KH2 not recognizing yen sids tower despite being there in BBS which released later. What KH does however is rethread a lot of previously introduced characters/mysteries and recontextualize them by revealing connections that were previously unknown. That is not objectively bad storytelling unless it deleted previously established plot (retconning).
It might be bad to you and others if you're not a fan of the whole "reconnect kingdom hearts" type of deal which is basically become the identity of the story KH is trying to tell.

@Nicholas Marashio there was never any doubt last of us had a better story than the kh series, nor did I say you compared it directly to kh 2. I simply began my own conversation. I have just a few things to say as you seem to be the type to call certain things opinions even though they are objective facts (the type of person who refuses to be wrong). Not saying thats what you are, just an assumption. 1.) There is a standard for quality, quality is not judged by preferences it is a set measurement and video games are not excluded from this fact of life.
2.) Kh2 music is not just the same sounds looped lmao, I am huge attacker of repetitive ass "music" aka 100% of rap "music" lol. For starters when I say the soundtrack craps on tlou's soundtrack I mean within context of the game, not just listening to it in a spotify playlist. Kh2 went out of its way to have several battle songs, a different theme for every area, and even different songs for each character. Its not just "oh its the sad song again" as there are several emotional themes for different types emotional scenes. The soundtrack fits every situation absolutely perfectly and is never overused. One of the best decisions kh2 made was to have longer songs instead of just 1-2 music that loops, for example the roxas boss theme is like 8 minutes long which is longer than you will actually be fighting him usually so you wont be hearing the same notes forever since none of songs are repetitive as they evolve and change as the song goes on. The last of us feels like it has 3 songs. You mentioned witcher and final fantasy, hate to break it to you but they suck dick. Grindy ass games with random encounters or sword sponge enemies are absolute trash. It doesnt matter how good the characters, story, music, or world is the fact of the matter is that the combat is garbage and it only appeals to those select few people who dont mind grindy repetitive shit. Thats like saying a winter coat that doesnt even keep you warm is great because some people like being cold.

I was ready to compare this to the Royal Edition DLC for FFXV and for what Re:Mind is... I objectively think Royal is a better deal for the same price.
The Royal Edition comes with FIVE NEW Bosses (story and extra) with new music, much longer (2+hour) final area, a really powerful final form, and allows all season 1 DLC episodes and the multiplayer expansion to be free.
ReMind has Re:Mind, which bassicaly forces you to just replay the final battles again, no new music or new bosses. The expanded Scala can be finished in 15 minutes. And I feel that the "play as other characters" thing should mearly be an update and part of the main game. And even then, the characters you do play as you already played as earlier in the main game. The only new ones are Kairi and Roxas. I mean what about Mickey, Ventus, Lea or even Terra (We could have played as The Lingering Will during his fight against Terra-Nort. That was what the trailer was implying). The only impressive part of the ReMind stuff is that Replica battle. It's cool and climatic (honestly cooler than the actual final boss) and that dramatic Mickey part gave me and my brother a good laugh. But I feel like all this stuff should be in the main game as updates. At least with FFXV the Royal Edition made these PREVIOUS DLC free for everyone (and trust me, I absolutely LOTHE the fact they made those DLC episodes with important story payed DLC, but for what they cost sepretaly it's a good price, $5 an episode, and these episodes, especially Prompto and Ignis, make the price a STEAL).
The only, ONLY part worth money is the Limit Cut episode, even then, we shouldn't have to pay for a mode in a previous game (KH2:FM) that's been released for YEARS. And that Data Greetings mode is also neat.
I feel likes at most it should be worth $15. Not a penny more.
I'm glad I kept my expectations down ever since my dissapointment with KH3 so the fire didn't fuel AS much but even then, it's not worth what I payed for.
PS: I have yet to do the secret episode, but from what I heard it does not add TOO much so I don't think it would still make the price worth it.

Sounds scummy right? At least make it an update like I wished they did with ReMind (the episode). The 13 hard bosses are just the Data Battles again. I didn't mind it tbh but I wish there was more content like answer questions to plot points because God knows how long it's gonna take before the next entry and again this is all wishful thinking:
A playable segment featuring the return of Lauriam Elerena Luxord and Demyxs human selves where all of them are playable now that they're free from Xemnas/Xehanorts control, maybe a back story on Luxord and Demyx past selves as Keyblade weilders we already knew of Marluxia and Larxenes past but Demyx and Luxords past just felt thrown in in the original game IMO maybe Luxords wild card could of played a role
Lauriam Elerena could reunite with Ventus maybe and since they are back to their old selves help find Sora while Lauriam and Elerena help find a way to figuring out what happened to Strelitzia
A backstory on Ienzos life prior to being adopted by Ansem, as mentioned by Even in BBS Ienzo lost his parents maybe we could figure out what caused that to happen maybe his home place got destroyed by the darkness who knows.
A playable segment with Terra Aqua and Ven traversing the realm of Darkness looking for Sora's whereabouts it's nice seeing them together again after a decade apart would of been cool if we had them all playable again not just Aqua
Another playable segment where you enter Roxas and Xions memories of Sora while Hayner Pence and Olette looks for clues on Sora's whereabouts
Another segment featuring Lea and Isa continue looking for the missing girl they befriended now that Isa is free from Xehanorts control and back to being a human since everything was unresolved because they had fallen out when they were nobodies.

People saying it's not worth $30 are clearly wrong. It's better than spending $70 on a final mix when you would just be repaying for the same game with bonus content, the dlc route makes it better for fans of the franchise. A full fan would be fully engaged and love the sotry as it had many heart warming moments and with th free update the cutscene got toutched up adding things like music end game cutscenes like when Roxas, Xion and Lea/ Axel are together again. And on top of this they fixed a lot of issues with difficulty, added data orgs that have a real challenge if you play on critical, you have the secret episode which does not add much but it provides you with the hardest battle in the franchise. The dlc is able to enchance the entire game, Kingdom hearts 3 re:mind was able to make the game have a proper ending. Overall remind is 100 times better than a final mix.

It bassicaly forces you to replay the final battles but you can play as SOME of the other characters (half of which you already played as in the game like Riku and Aqua. Roxas and Kairi are nice but what about Ventus, Mickey, Lea, or even Terra, the trailer implied you would be playing as the Lingering Will). It's just not worth it. The Data Battles and Data Greetings (I haven't done the Secret Episode yet but I hear it's friggin short so I'm not impressed) are the only things worth the purchases but like that it should cost around $15.

This is not a full game as advertised. Also the campaign has nothing repeatable. Explain the time travel storyline through short cutscenes. We actually get new areas 2 walk around in such as itleast 2 new worlds. Like radiant garden fully explorable plus new areas. Cloud. Sephiroth. Destiny islands as a fully explorable world leading 2 dark world plus kairis island accesible through boat. Twilight upgraded as fully explorable with mysterious tower plus stairs leading to click tower so we can finally go there. A separate campaign for riku like previous titles. The option to choose kh1 kh2 models as there in the game. So what if it disables boring form changes. Wud still b kool. Uhmm get gravity time mini and reflect magic back. The option to toggle the control for photo mode to first person view. Coliseum battles brought back. Fight past organisation members. Xexion xaldin laxeus wud b so kool. With unlocking kool abilities or synthesize unique accessories like in kingdom hearts 2 final mix. Bring back kh2 form abilities. Explain it through a damn short cutscene in yen sids tower. Photomode from start. Not after completing remind. And no lazy location 1 2 3. And arandeles world was awful. Needed a castle. Expand upon winnie the Pooh's lazy world. And ability to play as axel kairi roxas in even just 1 world. Just 2 walk around as them and check abilities. Visit axel time forest world. Expand upon there time there. And add coliseum like from birth by sleep with online rlements such as pvp. Start out small and continuesly add. They shud never have made it so easy. For newcomers huh. Thats what beginner mode is 4 duh. The world that never was returns. And those stupid money grabbing Disney rides obviously marketing greed just ruined the game. Available every 4 minutes. Ughhhh rant over. They have become greedy and are taking advantage of fans loyalty. This series has nearly ruined the franchise. Remind was a chance to save and most of it was repeat boring as hell repeat. Lazy greedy developers that dont have any ideas. Why are they employed?? Also riku interacting with final fantasy characters and sora doesn't. Sooo dumb. Explore land of departure. Access roxas room and vens room looking out would be awesome. Beating yozura shud give u glowing saber like keyblade like bbs. And can carry over to new game plus. And beating xemnas end game with it unlocks kool crown or something like that. Outfit decoration. If you start the game from the beginning will the dlc happen along with the base game or can you only preselect it from the menu after completing the base game?

So this confirms it for me, what used to easily be my all time favorite developers has become the EA/Ubisoft of Japan. Back in the day, back when it was Squaresoft you knew you were buying an amazing and *complete* game that would have a complete adventure that would stick with you, nowadays they can't even give us a complete story let alone a finished product. FFXV was a major disappointment but I told(or lied to) myself that it's because of the troubled development cycle but there's no excuse for this. I can't believe they're actually charging $30 for something severely lacking in worth when you've got games like TW3(a massive game that's filled to the brim with content that didn't require dlc, let alone even needing it) having dlc that's almost a new game by itself that's around the same price.
Edit: Sorry, I don't want to make it sound like there has been a noticeable drop in quality since Enix, just that it's progressed to what it is now which is a huge difference in what was and what it is now.

You didn't lie to yourself. I wholeheartedly don't blame FFXV for being what it turned into, it's stressful 10 year development messed it up. KH3, there's no excuse for that. Like at all.
At least now, all they sell now are Royal Editions of FFXV for $40 which comes with everything.
But KH3, a lackluster game (with no good excuse) will now be technecly $90 for the full game plus DLC, and even after all that, I still think it's not a complete game.

    • @WhiskeyTango76s
      @WhiskeyTango76s Před 4 lety

Pedro Cruz-Vargas A couple years ago I would've agreed with you, while I do agree with the troubled development being a factor in it's condition when released and that should be taken into account(to an extent, they still sold it for $60 knowing full well the game was chopped up, let alone actually complete however that doesn't excuse them for their handling of it post-release. They sold beta demos(testing new, unpolished mechanics instead of improving upon what was there making it even more apparent that it was slapped together) and called it "Story DLC," DLC that may as well have taken place in an alternate world seeing as how what's done is never mentioned in the story. Prompto does something extremely significant in his DLC, something that if not done would've severely effected the story yet we hear absolutely nothing about it in the base game(which is obviously the bait that's used to sell the demo at the cost of solidifying an already jumbled story since they decided to chop off parts of the base game to sell later) so it may as well have never even happened. Then there's the Royal Edition..canonically they literally changed the events leading up to the end of the base story and the only way for you to see the end of the true story is to give them more money. XV sold extremely well and made a profit on the first day, there's no reason for them to have handled it the way they did post-release.
I realize I'm probably being a bit hard on them(and I apologize if so) but man..I held Square in such high regard for most of my life(I'm 32, been a fan since I was 9 or 10) so that could cloud my judgment a bit.

This dlc can kinda feel like a bit of a stiff but if you look at the older games you'd pay 60 on release, and then another 60 for the final mic version containing roughly this same amount of added content, if not less. So while it feels a bit slim this is a better value cost wise than previously, I think people just feel ripped off because it feels like a seperate purchase and is under the label of dlc, while before many players may have waited a long time and bought only the final mix versions. This pack occasionally goes on sale on all store fronts with the remind dlc packed in all for 60 bucks, most often on epic games service.

If disliked KH3, well for one, why are you here? No DLC will ever fix your "disappointment." Two, obviously don't get the DLC.

Nicholas Marashio not sure what you are trying to get to bro. If you don't like content why be negative about it? Just don't follow it. Allow those who enjoy to have fun with it, why make it unbearable to others? As for the review, the DLC is fine for the content that it brings. If you enjoyed the game chances are you will enjoy the DLC. If the game didn't meet your standards then don't bother with the DLC. There is no "fanboyism" or "unmasked" criticism just facts. Why bother getting dlc content for something you didn't like. Same as why hate on a piece of media you didn't like? Move on and let others enjoy it. Also if you have valid criticism there are ways to make them constructive instead of disruptive.

The story has some real shit in there, but half of it it’s just replay the final part of the main game and that kinda let me down. On the other hand, no one actually recognizes how awesome Datas and Yozora fights actually are: i managed to get in for hours and hours and it was so much fun finally having to exploit the entirety of the gigantic combat system that this game actually has and the main game doesn’t use at its fullest. Not for 30 bucks, but for half of it you get a great deal

Having just played through games 1-3 in the last year I have to say both KH2 and 3 are about the same in terms of difficulty. The 1st was actually difficult and had some really punishing boss battles. Or maybe I just became a better KH player as I went along.
Think I'll wait till the price of the DLC comes down , doesn't look like it adds much to the game.

    • @ireneluo415
      @ireneluo415 Před 3 lety +1

Definitely think that KH1 was the most difficult out of the 3! KH2 wasn’t particularly challenging, but at the very least, some battles were trickier than others upon the first play through. While playing KH3, not once did I feel like anything was at stake during the battles because the linked/special moves were constantly available. They really made the fighting even more brainless than before :(

kairiXyuna94 Great question! Yes, there are save points. The first save point takes a while to get to, though. After that, it’s the same as the labyrinth in the main game (save point, 2 boss rooms, etc). The final boss rush is long with no saves in between, and you can save a “completed file” after that.
