I don’t think Olga changing coaches really had that much to do with her performance at the 76 Olympics. Between the 72 and 76 games, the Soviet Union constantly had her on the road doing non-stop exhibitions as part of this huge PR tour. She barely even had the time to be in the gym and I think if the Soviet government had allowed her to get back in the gym and focus solely on her training then she would’ve done better at those games. And honestly, even if Olga were to have gotten a perfect 10 at those games, I don’t see how she could’ve lived up to both the hype of her previous performance and that of the new kid on the block, Nadia. I mean the media had Nadia fever to the point that Olga’s own teammate Nellie Kim also scored a perfect 10 at those games and it hardly got any attention by the press. Regardless of whether or not she had the same coach, the 76 games were always going to be Nadia’s to win. Plus, a silver on beam and a team gold are still really impressive so I wouldn’t look at her performance as any sort of failure, especially considering how cutthroat it was to even make the Olympic team in the first place.

i remember this, as a kid i loved watching the olympics, olga was a superstar after 1972, and the breakup with renald knysh was big news. at least 6 female russian gymnasts (including olga) would accuse kynsh of sexual abuse, rape, and other deviant behavior. it's always very hard for premier athletes to make good coaches, many have a hard time adjusting to the fact that almost all of their students can't compete at that level.

Well, considering that this is the system she grew up with--and it was system wide, not just her own coach--breaking the mold would be a tough thing.

All gymnastic coaches were ‘bullies’ back in those days. Eastern bloc especially. The training methods I grew up with would not be allowed today and would be considered bullying today. Times change.

@Cleow33 Unfortunately, it's not just coaches from the Eastern bloc that were/are bullies. Look at all the abuse American girls and many others from around the world have suffered

  • @takerkellygiveusbacktupac617

Meh. She didn't do anything different than the Karoliys ... Americans are just soft and not used to eastern block training methods.
My heart breaks for all those girls who were sexually abused by coaches and trusted men in the sport.
