olgakorbut.com/ Follow me to London with olgakorbut1 on Twitter @olgakorbut1 and Olga Korbut on Facebook Gold and Silver medal performances at the 1972 Munich Olympics
Olga Korbut was more than a superb gymnast. There is so much individuality and self expression in her performance. To find sweetness, determination, vulnerability, and sincerity shining through an athletic event is unique. That is what made Olga Korbut an artist.
Olga's creativity and flair was especially surprising given the mechanical expressionless performances of the other Soviet gymnasts. She truly was a unique individual. Won Gold on balance beam and the floor exercise and should have on the uneven parallels as well but the judges didnt know how to credit her unbelievable moves.
I was 9 years old and if you did not live through that moment in time you cannot understand the exquisite joy she brought to so many people. I joined about a million other girls (and boys) who clammored to find gymnastics lessons. Nadia was also an earth shaker but Olga was the first. I still love her as much as I did then. I miss Jim MacKay and Gordon Maddox too- voice and spirit of the old time Olympics
The beam routine may look tame compared to today's standards, but when you consider that it was made of hardwood with no cushioning or spring action, there's a lot more appreciation for what she did back then. The backflip, front off combination at the end was a crowd pleaser for sure. And I honestly don't think the sport has seen one athlete who pushed the sport further in terms of difficulty in such a short time. I think if you take Olga Korbut in her prime and transport her in time to today with modern equipment, I have no doubt that she would still have the talent to compete with the best.
I remember watching Olga Korbut's floor routine in 1972. I've never seen a gymnast who showed so much joy in a routine. While today's women are very technically proficient, and I won't take anything away from them, they no longer dance much during their floor routines. While I admire them, I really loved the old way when the women did more than tumble back and forth across the floor with a few dance moves thrown in. Olga was the best gymnast ever in my book.
They do it today on mats with springs: I don't find it as compelling. And they do it on PEDs: I don't find this admirable. Or inspiring. Or tolerable. Some look more like body builders. 1972 was way before my time (first watched gymnastics in the 90s summer Olympics) so these aren't "good ol days" observations. I always looked forward to catching some female gymnastics in olympics until I'd say maybe middle/late 2000s... after that it seemed to change. And I changed the channel. "But so and so does six flips into a half tucked something or other into a full bla bla! She is a monster on the mat!!!" I'd rather watch Nadia or this girl (Olga) do a "round off back hand spring" or hell, a simple summersault. Because of how they'd do it. With grace and cool style and personality. And not on PEDs.
I’ve been watching the gymnastics today and I think today’s athletes are amazing. But, when I consider that Olga’s performance happened 50 years ago and the equipment she was using was way more basic, especially on beam and vault, then I am totally blown away by how fantastic she was. And there are NO mistakes - not even a wobble on the beam! I think some of today’s gymnasts have been watching vintage Olga very closely - the Gadirova twins, for example, are very Olga - keep it up, girls! Gymnastics is in an exciting place in terms of the acrobatics, but a bit more Olga finesse and balletic quality would complete the picture.
Before the fabulous five, before Keri Strug, before Mary Lou, before Nadia, there was Olga. This video is out of chronological order. The even bar routine shocked the world. She was a sensation! She set off a gymnastics frenzy in the US with mothers all over the country entering their daughters in gymnastics lessons. ABC learned a lesson too, women liked watching women gymnasts!! Duh!
Why tarnish the names of Olga and Nadia with the mention of Mary Lou and Kerri in the same sentence? Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci are captivating gymnasts, icons of the sport. Mary Lou Retton and Kerri Strug are the products of home field advantages and scoring shenanigans.
Totally agree. There have been other greats but only one Olga. The commentary on here says it all. The commentators were clearly in love with her as was everyone. "gee I hope she gets it" "oh yeah" " Oh my gosh". They were as captivated as everyone.
I always loved the way, that Olga would hold her splits on the Balance Beam. She showed off her flexibilty and her strength. She was very daring and it didn't look like she was scared of anything. Her bars routine in the allaround was her only messup, and she showed her softer side with tears of sadness.
Olga was lowballed on bars especially in Team Optionals. No way should she have gone before Tourischeva in the lineup - you could tell the Team coach wanted the old school gymnastics to prevail over Olga's daring acrobatics. I vaguely remember Olga's gymnastics from the 1972 Olympics - it was the first summer Olympics I watched. I wanted to do gymnastics after watching Olga but my late aunt said I was too young - I was NINE years old at the time - most gymnasts generally start at around six! My darling aunt did not know better back then. Olga remains one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.
К той,молоденькой ,- Оленька!!!!- вы просто потрясающе отработали свои выступления- за нашу любимую Родину,за наших людей- которые болели за вас,девчушек ,и гордились вашими успехами- все девочки выкладывались на все 100 %! Olga was just as perfect in 72 as Nadia was in 76 Olga should’ve gotten a 10 for her bars routine. I watched both Olympics Olgas back flip off the uneven bars took my breath away.
Фантастика!!!!!!!! Тогда мы гордились своими спортсменами и слезы текли по щекам от гордости за страну........ Такое было патриотическое воспитание( не отпускает до сих пор))))))))
I keep watching and watching the Olympics every year and have yet to see the perfection of Olga matched by far! Every time I crave to see the true perfect 10 Gymnastics performance, I have to come back here- I guess perfection cannot be improved!
I've never seen anyone today do anything like this on Uneven bars. Other events sure, today's girls do incredible stuff...but this on the bars is the best I've ever seen ever. You don't see anyone bouncing from one bar to the next like that.
I wouldn’t call it cute, she definitely had an elegance to her movements that I think is a lost art today! It’s all about how many twists and not so much the flexibility and performance. I think the judges wouldn’t know what to do if they had a Simone biles 60 years ago
Damn. That shot of Lazakovich sobbing on the medal stand, that is tough to see. She was absolutely excellent and it’s hard to believe someone could have beaten her. She was so fluid and smooth and precise. But it was Olga. Olga was one of kind. She was spirited and energetic and engaging. Just a different style of gymnastics and the judges went for it
Olga wasn't too happy either, which means that she felt sorry for her team mate, which is sad because it means her sorrow stole some of her well deserved joy.
It makes me sad to wonder whether that gold medal would've changed the course of Lazakovich's life. Who would've thought that she'd be dead twenty years later from the consequences of alcoholism?

I like old gymnastics better than today’s, more aesthetic and grace, less tumbling and stress.
I can't understand why Olga never got a 10.
