My mum visited a relative near Barnstaple for a few days in the second week of may 1944. The bus had a bag of gas and the fields contained 'thousands and thousands of tents" , "full of Americans". On the way back the train was packed with them. My mum, her elder sister and my grandma were joined in the compartment by a lady who said that the yank soldiers were bothering her, mum says her words were something like " I'm not in the mood " and that she was going to visit the parents (whom she had never met) of her new and recently dead husband . He was killed at sea . This railway , minus the tents and the crowds , is just how I imagine it .
Another fantastic film from the village, loving the new views, are there some stories about the people in the village ie.. the chaps leaving the church, and the navy boys disembarking the No10?, will there be a brawl in the Cross Key pub on Saturday night?
