    Every so often I get asked when I'll be putting sheep on my layout and now War World Scenics (or WWS) have kindly sent me their new Sheep Flocking Kit to try out.
    This new kit uses the same principle as their static grass system to add tiny 0.5mm fibres to model sheep to give them a wool effect. The kit works best with their Pro Grass Box Applicator, which makes it a really easy process. I have to admit it's very fun too and I think the results are some of of the best looking sheep I've ever seen in model form!
    Again I just want to say a big thank you to War World Scenics for sending this kit over for me to check out. Even if you don't have sheep on your layout you should definitely have a look at their static grass system which I highly recommend!

    That may well go on a Christmas list! I'd like to try a few leaves on a tree with that. As for the Ram markings, they should only appear on ewes rears once a Ram has been introduced to a field. It's so a farmer knows who the daddy is and to make sure there is not too much inbreeding.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem +1

      Yeah the Box Applicator works really well for doing trees and bushes too! I believe some sheep markings are also done by the farmers to denote how many lambs each ewe is carrying. Thanks for watching 👍

    Nice video Jo. I saw the original short that WWS put up of this on their own channel a while ago. But I have to say, with no disrespect to them, that your video of the sheep flocking kit is much better. This mainly because you go threw each stage of the process and also you have filmed it from better and clearer angles. Best wishes, Mark.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. To be fair to the WWS folks, they're not primarily filmmakers (in the reverse situation I'd struggle to design and make an applicator!) and I presume the reason they sent me the kit to try out was so that there was some good footage out there to help promote the product. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @StanoverModelRailway2020
      @StanoverModelRailway2020 Před rokem

      Yes your right Jo about WWS. They are a great company though and I have used a lot of their static grass products on my own layout. I think that their video was filmed at a recent show (possibly Warley?). Hence why the conditions there wouldn't have been right to film a 'proper' video on the sheep flocking kit. So yes, I guess that's why they sent the kit to you, so that you could do it justice and show it off properly for them. All the best, Mark.

    sounds good looks good but i would make a lid for the applicator then saves the mess and saves the flock

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před rokem

      It's probably not worth it to be honest. Once the flock isn't over the applicator it falls back to the ground so it only spreads out a few centimetres. It's much easier to just hoover the excess back up for reuse (like I showed in the video) rather than have a lid over the top which will make the process a lot more tricky. Thanks for watching 👍

    BAAA......!
    Well done Stu....
    'Flock' on Sheep....
    Who knew.....?
    This video was as quirky and entertaing as it was informative.
    Modelling never ceases to amaze.
    Peoples creativity is, I supose, at the heart of the hobby.......as is the cultivation of patience.
    Mind you........ and without going into full 'Elf & Safety Nazi Mode here...........all that 'Flying Flock' (and yes we must be careful with our pronunciation and language where sheep are concerned), from the Static Plate Charge, needs managing a bit better to protect nose, lungs and eyes.
    Obviously we can use safety glasses and a mask, but masks can be a bit overly oppressive and not to work with at times, although even the basic 'Covid Mask' (pointless and useless for stopping the spread or contracting The China Virus), might well work.
    I would be inclined to use a cut-down clear plastic bottle on the Static Plate.
    The bottle, say from a 2 litre bottle of water, cut off about four to six inches below the top would work fine. The cut wide open end could stand on the Static Plate, (possible taped to it with masking tape), covering all the flock powder mix, and the sheep then dangled in through the bottle top cap opening, using the connecting charge-wire fixed to the sheep.
    Obviously if the wire from the unit was not long enough it could be easily extended.
    Any 'Flying Flock', (yep, I am still being careful), would be pretty much contained within the bottle. Even better, if a small piece of muslin, cloth or gauze were put around the wire to cover the cap opening, (so rather like an open grommet or washer), this would help.
    PING: An even better idea would be to use the bottle top as the grommet, fixing it to the connecting charge-wire. It would slide freely along the wire as required.......covering the hole.
    Just a few thoughts which people might find useful...
    James Hennighan
    Yorkshire, England
    P.S.
    If I were WWSCENICS I think I would be inclined to give the Sheep Flocking Kit a more quirky name to aid sales and marketing......say:
    Wooley Baa- Baas'.........but thats just me.
    I suppose Sheep Flocking does work..

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před 3 měsíci

      Bear in mind that it's not as constant as it is in the video because I've edited the interesting parts together. In reality you just get a quick burst of flock for about a second and even then, as soon as it's not over the metal plate it falls back onto the workbench. You'd have to stick your head directly over it to breathe any in my experience so if we're going to start worrying about this, I think the glues and paints we often use would be more of an issue initially. Thanks for watching 👍

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Před 9 měsíci

      There's hardly any wastage at all. As I showed in the video the excess is easily cleared up and reused on further sheep. Similarly the fibres don't go into the air, they fall back to the ground as soon as they're not over the metal plate anymore. I would suggest doing it on a tray but they don't really go high enough to drift into the air, it just looks more messy on the close up than it is in reality.
      The micro applicator would actually make it a lot harder to get a consistent covering so personally I would still use the box applicator over that. Thanks for watching 👍

    • @johndsimpson
      @johndsimpson Před 9 měsíci

      I have used both the plate and micro, & the coverage is just as goo with both. You don't even need to turn the sheep for full coverage. The fibers just go straight to the target.
