How To Do 6 Speed To 7 Speed Freewheel Conversion

  • How to convert a bike from a 6 speed freewheel to a 7 speed freewheel. This is a vintage Lotus road bike (made in Japan). It was a 12 speed (2x6). I converted it to be a 14 speed bike (2x7). I upgraded it with a 7 speed freewheel and 7 speed SIS downtube shifters. The rear derailleur was already SIS compatible. And the chain had been recently replaced, and it was 7 speed speed compatible. This is a pretty easy upgrade.

    @Guillaume Bourdel, I found this stand cheap on ebay. It was a bit rough. The bottom part had some rust. So I cleaned it up and repainted the bottom part. It was originally the same gray as the top part. I keep the Park Tool stand in the house and this one in the garage. That way I don't have to drag the Park Tool stand in and out. The Park Tool stand is much nicer. This one doesn't hold the bike quite as solid as the Park Tools stand. I still have my homemade stand which I used for years. It is currently holding a Trek 520 frame that I plan to build up.

    • @Le_Guigster
      @Le_Guigster Před 10 lety

      Cool! I have to tell you the stand you made was one of the best I've seen (and I've researched DIY stands for quite a bit!) and I used it as a base for mine. I wasn't quite sure about the plastic T joint to hold the bike so I installed pipe clamps instead. It never failed me and although it's not as practical as a "real" one it still does the job very nicely. I like how it can be taken apart too to store in tight space like the one I have. It sure makes any repair and cleaning easier!

    FYI I have a bike that has a 6 speed shimano 600 uniglide rear hub with 7 cogs on it. You need to use slightly thinner spacers between the cogs (specific to 7-sp). The small threaded cog has enough space to screw on a few threads, which seems safe to me. I've put a few thousand miles on it with no issues. I don't know if this would work for all 6 speed uniglide hubs, but it works for mine.
    I also wonder if you just have a non-indexed friction shifter, if there's many RD's designed for 6 speed that can't handle 7 cogs? don't know if there's any leeway for adjusting the limit screw.

I have an '87 Trek with Suntour a5000 derailleur (AccuShift system?) and DT shifters. 6 speed indexed shifter. Do you think I could just get a new pair of 7 speed suntour shifters (or even just the right side one) that would work with my existing derailleur? • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety +1

      You can have a bigger cog with 6 cogs. 7 cogs give you more gearing options. And more options for indexed shifters. You would have to research that. I am guessing if it is accushift, it will probably work. I like the Shimano SIS indexed stuff.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 4 lety +2

      You will need a new wheel. 8 speed hubs are wider than 6/7 speed hubs. And generally 8+ speed are cassettes, not freewheels. There are 8+ speed freewheels, but they are usually cheap junk, and the longer axle is prone to bending.

    what about long/short cage derailleurs?,just realised u didn't mention this?,thought most 6 speed derailleurs could be adjusted to accommodate 7 speed just like the old tourneys which were for 6/7 speed?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety

      +neil crompton Long cages are to take up more chain where there are large differences in gearing (big chain ring/big cog versus small chain ring/small cog). Nothing to do with this video. (see my vid on chain sizing czcams.com/video/ELsKrgTt0oY/video.html) A rear derailleur in the case of this video needs to be able to reach all the cogs. A 6 speed RD may or may not be able to move far enough to reach all 7 cogs.

    Hey RJ, I have a few quick question for you about mods on my Citizen Tokyo Bike, which I got really cheap. The standard equipment is 16 inch wheel freewheel, Shimano 14-28T 6 spd, the stock tires are 16" x 1.75" 45 psi. stock plastic foldable pedals, Alloy V-brakes and 170mm alloy crank arms with 48T alloy chainwheel. Cool bike, but too slow and a little heavy. I'd like to upgrade a few components for a little more torque. Of the few blogs, I read, recommendations have been made for a 11-28 freewheel, 7 speed and 55 T chainwheel. My questions are has anyone attempted this project? If so, did this combination make a difference? Lastly, to reduce the cost of overspending, the best place to source components? Thank you.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 8 lety +1

      The hub spacing is likely different and you would need new shifters also. Not sure what kind of shifters you plan on adding, but road shifters are not compatible with mountain front derailleurs. And road brakes are not generally compaitble with v-brakes, etc etc.

    • @gregorydeemer2108

    Thanks for this! I have a Mongoose Hill Topper that I bought in August of 1990 at a Schwinn shop. My Mongoose has a mostly original 3x6 Shimano drivetrain and I enjoy keeping this bike rolling. Plus, the steel frame is great for my two-year old's Thule seat. Anyway, I watched this video because I'm considering whether to convert my Mongoose to a 3x7 drivetrain, or not. My thought was to use the whole 7-speed rear wheel of my wife's 2003 Trek Singletrack (she rode the Trek maybe five times total and it's essentially in mint condition with Shimano Acera components). So, if I understand this video correctly, I could potentially use my wife's 2003 Trek as a "donor bike" to achieve a 21 speed bike on my Mongoose? In other words, all I would need to do is replace the 6-speed rear wheel with the 7-speed rear wheel, replace the existing 6-speed shifter with a 7-speed shifter, and possibly use a spacer on the rear axle (if needed)? Thanks again.

      If the Hill Topper has a HG FH a 7 speed cassettes might require a 130mm OLD. Easy on a steel frame ATB. I did this on a 95' Threshold. This year Mongoose had a 6 and 7 speed HG Altus group set available on HG free hubs.

    How big are the gears on that seven speed in this video and how big were the gears that this bike previously had as a six speed? I am asking because if I were the one to convert a six speed to a seven speed, I would look at the sizes of my six gears before adding another one. If the sizes of my six gears, in tooth count, are 28, 24, 21, 18, 16, and 14 when converting to a seven speed, I would want that added gear to either have 32 teeth or 12 teeth, so the seven speed options that I would consider would be gear sizes 28, 24, 21, 18, 16, 14, and 12 or sizes 32, 28, 24, 21, 18, 16, and 14. Another option would be sizes 34, 28, 24, 21, 18, 16, and 14 or something very similar. If the extreme gears of a seven speed are the same sizes as the extreme gears of a six speed, then I no longer see the point of converting to a seven speen, unless if you want tighter shifting between gears.

    Hi RJ, thank you for all your tutorials for us home mechanics. After 8 years since its publishing this video needs a refresh. VG Sports has 11 speed 11t - 36t frewheels selling on the Internet forest. Could you do a conversion from 7s to say 10s or 11s freewheel, and what it takes for a conversion to succeed in terms of axel, derailleur, shifter??

    So, my old Schwinn is currently 2x5, but I'm thinking about replacing the freewheel to add more gears. I'm not sure if I want to get a 6 or 7 speed freewheel. How much wider are the freewheels with more gears? is it really enough that you'd have to bend the frame? Also, when you say "spacer" do you mean the same thing as a washer?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 10 lety +1

      A 5 speed hub is 120mm wide. A 6/7 speed hub is 126mm wide. So you will have to spread the rear triangle. But it has to be evenly spread on each side. A spacer is basically a washer. But they make them for axles in mm widths.

      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 10 lety

      Well to start off, look for something that wasn't sold at Walmart. Look for a band name like Trek or Specialized. You aren't going to find a good dual suspension mtn bike unless you fork out some bucks. A hard tail is okay. You can maybe get a bike with front shocks. Look for good shocks like RockShox. Low end bikes may have shocks, but they aren't much more than springs and are more for looks than use. Mongoose does make some higher end bikes too, but unless you know what you are looking at, I would avoid that brand. They make a lot more low end bike that higher end ones.

    Hi RJ, I have a question for you. I'm trying to do a 6-7 speed conversion, and have completed all the steps, however I ran into the problem you mentioned at 1:11 - 1:27 with the freewheel rubbing against the frame. I solved this using a spacer as suggested, however it has caused another problem. Even though the wheel is completely in the dropouts, it is not central in the frame, and so is very difficult (impossible?) to get the brakes to fit properly as one pad is almost touching the rim and the other is about 2cm away. Is there a way of solving this that doesn't involve buying and fitting a new, narrower hub?

    For what it's worth, Sunrace freewheels work perfect with Shimano index or friction shifters. They're ramped so they shift way better than vintage freewheels, especially with friction shifters. They look better than the modern Shimano ones like in the video with the hideous big black cog with a Shimano logo that goes on a Walmart bike, they're zinc plated and drilled and you can get them for less than $20. I have thousands of trouble free miles on them.

I don’t want to go 2x7 with cold resetting the dropouts just to be forced to friction shifting to make 2x7 freehubs somewhat work on my 2x6 SIS. I don’t understand why the big companies do not make one good retro system for those many old bikes out there. I think there are enough enthusiasts out there for a small batch production.

      @@RJTheBikeGuy, I really like your videos! Very helpful information. In this video, you still had to change the shifter from 6 to 7, which I do not want to do, because I am happy with the quality of the Shimano 600 Series 6-speed shifter. I don't see a reason to go 7-speed. I would instead like to replace hub and freewheel with new parts (I know I can get worn/used ones, mostly for a large premium, on ebay), but I have trouble identifying a manufacturer in the SunTour quality class (Origin 8 seems to be the only 126mm option on the market and 13-XX freewheels are not longer manufactured?). In order to keep the gear ratio I am toying with the idea to upgrade the chainring from 52 to maybe 56 or even larger and then use a 14-XX freewheel.
      I also got a bike that was cold set by someone to fit a 130mm 7-speed freehub, but the indexed shifters (again 6-speed Shimano 600) work only in friction mode with the 7-speed cassette. Maybe you could point me to a resource how to retrofit the shifters: It is my understanding that by exchanging one of the rings in the Shimano 600 6-speed shifters, they can be converted to 7-speed without the need of replacing the entire shifter. I am trying to find a copy of the instruction manual from the 80ies that supposedly describes the process, but so far I did not succeed.
      Thanks!

    Nice video. If the idea of converting a 6 to 7-speed was to get more speed out of the bike, I'm afraid the 7-speed has a 14 tooth sprocket on the smallest gear ( just like your old 6 speed). If you are going to be climbing steep hills, then it is an improvement. I just found out that by doing research there is a Shimano HG-37 7-speed freewheel has a 13 tooth sprocket on the smallest gear. Just a thought.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  Před 7 lety +1

      No, the idea was to increase the number of gearing options and make the bike slightly more modern. Going to 7 speed makes it easier to go to indexed shifting which has limited options at 6 speed. I never said it would make the bike faster.
