We head to Belper in the Amber Valley part of Derbyshire, situated in the East Midlands area of England to see what's there and to answer the question 'is Belper worth visiting'.
The town of Belper is 8 miles north of Derby and is situated in the valley of the River Derwent.
Belper has a farmers market which is held on Belper's historic market place on the second Saturday of every month, selling a wide variety of things from local cheeses, honey, bread, brownies, cakes and more.
What is Belper famous for?
The town now holds World Heritage Status due to the historical significance of being one of the first mill towns and forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
Belper used to be totally reliant upon manufacturing, such as cotton spinning and textiles in the mills (such as East Mill and North Mill).
Today the main sectors in Belper are retail, services and tourism, and thanks to great shopping streets like King Street the town wins awards for it's shopping. In 2014, Belper was presented with the High Street of the Year award for the Market Town category, as well as winning the award overall.
As well as the town of Belper itself, the parish also includes:
Bargate
Belper Lane End
Blackbrook
Broadholm
Far Laund
Farnah Green
Makeney
Milford
Mount Pleasant
Openwoodgate
White Moor
Is Belper worth visiting?
I would say absolutely yes! Enjoy a walk down King Street shopping, spend time in the historical streets of this great town, and have lunch in the Black Swan in the Market Place.

The beautiful river gardens next to mill is a bit of a tourist attraction, a great place to stop off at after exploring the town centre!
Agreed on I’m from belper
It’s a beautiful place and we’ve lived here for almost 17 years. As a semi rural town, it caters for most needs - walks, restaurants, high street shops, Ritz cinema (awesome night out), pubs and largely friendly people. Likewise, easy from a commute perspective with easy access to junction 25 and 28 of the M1
Beautiful place what most English towns should look like thriving and affluent
Well. I would never have believed that I would see a video about Belper.
We're a friendly lot in Belper, glad you enjoyed visiting
Loved it! Back soon for a proper look round!
Another great video with interesting comments thank you so keep on walking 🚶🏻👍❤️
I remember when Thornton's mover out of Sheffield, it was a big deal and many Sheffielders were upset about that. The reason they moved was down to the amount of tax that the corrupt council were charging them. I can't remember the exact year but it was some time in the eighties when my rates were £500 a year!
Great town very friendly love the river gardens perfect anytime of year
Absolutely love the fact that there's a few micro pubs in Belper. The place looks clean and pretty well maintained too.
Another brilliant and beautiful video. England feels so much like home. I cannot wait to see it first hand. 😊
Places like Belper are the best because they have that British feel without having much in the way of tourism.
Head up the A6 road and you have Matlock Bath, Chatsworth House, Bakewell and Buxton. So loads to see.
Heyy, lovely to see my home town! Not been back in a little while, so it's great to get another look!
Welcome back! (virtually of course!)
Yes green shop at the end lovely.🎉
Looks like a nice peaceful place to live. Lovely .
It is!
Beautiful little town 👌👌
Definitely!
06:15 that’s our office above the sweet shop! Great video
The green shop was a fruit and veg shop run by Mrs Lees in the 1940’s, her husband was one of the chimney sweeps.
Hi you have done the town proud, not been for a few years. We will probably go in the next week or so as a direct result of your video 👍
Amazing feedback thank you!
Gosh how different from the 60’s when I worked in Belper for ten years. I believe it’s won an award, not long ago for best town in Derbyshire.
Lots more shops now, vibrant, and I can’t remember the Park, but I expect it was there then. Thanks you’ve brought back many happy memories. 💕
You're welcome Carol - thank you so much for watching my channel!
Yeah it changed a lot
Been through the place on the train, but never up into the town. It looks a nice place to visit, I'd say. Many thanks for this very well filmed video.
Thank you too for watching
I live in Belper and you've done a nice job there, of course there is the fabulous River Gardens, Mill Museum and the Memorial Gardens all very nice to visit.
Thank you Jim - I'll film the other bits on the next trip thank you for the info!
I live in Belper and it's a beautiful town. The Farmers Market is the second Saturday of the month. We have a lovely community here.
It really is!
Really nice town, would like to see a series of videos showing nice towns you could retire to in the south.
Consider it done - watch this space
Lovely people in Belper
Haven’t been to Belper since the company you mentioned (that I used to work for) who made Swarfega, relocated to nearby Denby. Lovely place. Hope Elachi’s is still as good.
It is!
Can't believe you missed the river gardens and the massive mill, Belper's biggest landmarks!! (Belper resident)
I filmed it - it’s coming up soon on the channel
Peregrine falcon
Goshawk ... bigger.
Did you not visit the Belper river gardens next to the mill? Beautiful place. I played skittles for the George and Dragon Belper team for years
Didn’t have time on this trip sadly
Nice place like the mill there
Yes really nice place!
Lovely little town, that green shop reminds me a bit of the Rovers Return in Corrie.
Good video but Wish you had gone down a few side streets. Many of them have interesting little independent shops and cafes.
Next time for sure
A great video of BELPER | A look around Belper, Derbyshire [Is Belper worth visiting?]👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
❤️❤️❤️
Yes belper is worth visiting but would check when farmers market is on which Saturday. But I personally would combine it with belper in the morning and matlock bath in the afternoon both 20 mins apart on the a6
Hi my brother lives in Belpher but we still haven’t been to it, looks very beautiful place x
Fell out huh ? 🤔 families ah - don’t like his GF /wife ? We understand.
@@serenityinside1 🙄🥱😴🛌
I liked it so much I moved here (there were other reasons too ! 👫)
Lived in Belper all my life, think it's a great place. You could easily make another video featuring places like the River Gardens, St John's Chapel etc.Colledges Furniture Shop occupies the old New Inn which had the lo gest bar in Derbyshire. Contact Derbyshire Heritage Walks and the guy there will tell you much more about the town. P.S.Market Place, not Market Square.
Noted!
Bowler Land rover was started by a Belper man and the factory is 200 yards down from the market place.
Going to belper next Saturday for a Indian at elachi resturant on bridge street, best Indian ever had locally( I live in heanor about 20 min drive away) we have friends coming from Liverpool for a meal
Nice!! Enjoy!
U should do a video in Belper when they do a Christmas lights
Funny name for a town.

Can anyone tell me what was the name of the tearooms as you are walking up and I think its the road on the right hand side that use to do home made scones and cakes and do jacket potatoes at lunch. It had an upstairs and ground floor. It was run by a lady who worked with her mother there in the 1980s please
Hi there. I live in Belper and was hoping to spot someone I know! Enjoyed the vid. Did u know that the Tardis door leads to an actual time capsule in a converted air-raid shelter?
no way! that's amazing!
It used to be santas groto at Christmas time
I was born there 80 years ago. I hardly recognise Kings Street 😄
Lived in Belper all my life and only just realised the trains run under the shops 0_0
😮😮😮
That white door is now a pub
Where my family are from, thank you
You’re welcome ❤️
I live in belper
Nice! Nice place to live!
Hello. Please whats the closet airport to Belper coming from Nigeria
East Midlands
It certainly has a lot more “life” than some of the towns you have visited recently.
True! 🤣
do you remember Ivan and Tim from the bingo
No but I'm not a Belper resident
Someone else in the comments might tho!
Yeah they now run a hotel in Blackpool they’ve been there 20 years
The doorway at0:41 was to my ex gf's flat. She was a nice girl.
You get a lot of dodgy people in belper these days especially people claiming for blue badges who dont have mobility issues i live near to someone who does just that and his friend gets one because of his poor lifestyle choice and not an actual medical condition which obesity definitely isnt.
😮😮😮
Clueless
