Hiking the Camino de Santiago in 18 Days - The French Way to Finisterre - 2018

  • I hiked the Camino de Santiago in 18 days, covering 537 miles (865 kilometers) from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Cape Fisterra via the French Way & Finisterre Camino, averaging almost 30 miles per day for nearly 3 weeks. While that may sound like torture to most people, I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and had a blast along the way, even filming a dance music video, watch until the end of the film! Buen Camino!

    To be able to ultra-marathon the Camino Frances in 16 days is impressive or at least it would be if it were a race, which it's not. Life like the Camino is a journey and is meant to be savoured. Many people who get this will often slow down before the finish line just to savour the experience some more and prolong the euphoria to avoid the end. I understand that we're all in the hustle and bustle meaning that we have to schedule our activities and only have so many days available for leisure. Don't get me wrong: I'm impressed with the rapidity your completion but I believe that you missed out on a great many things that the Camino has to offer. As the slowest marathon runner - 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours and 32 minutes - Shizo Kanakuri said “It was a long trip. Along the way, I got married, had six children and ten grandchildren.” Yet another perspective can be derived from the adage "Quality vs Quantity". So congratulations on your ability to complete the Camino Life experience so quickly but, if it's not a race, try to slow down and enjoy the moment.

      Thank you for the message Ricardo, and thank you for watching my film! I totally agree that most people wouldn't enjoy my hiking pace, and I wouldn't even recommend it. Fastpacking the Camino wasn't easy. It pushed me to my limits physically, mentally, and emotionally, and that's exactly what I was looking for. The Camino was an opportunity for me to unplug from my normal routine, push myself out of my comfort zone, reflect on my past, and consider how I want to approach my future, all while experiencing the solitude and beauty of long days hiking alone in a gorgeous country. I know I'm weird, but I've found that my deepest introspection and best thinking is done when I'm on the edge of sanity, and pushing my limits physically is typically what gets me there. I don't think there's a wrong way to do the Camino, and I'm not opposed to going back and doing it slower next time, that just wasn't where I was at in life this time. I don't expect anyone to understand, and my mom definitely thinks I'm crazy, but I came out of those 18 days incredibly rejuvenated, refreshed, with great ideas for my personal and professional life, and a greater respect for Spain and the natural and cultural history of the land. Thanks again Ricardo!

      @@ChrisTarzanClemens Again, I am impressed by the speed at which you completed the Camino and your endurance to be able to walk 18 x 50km days straight! I mean WOW! I also understand you when you say that your "deepest introspection and best thinking is done when I'm on the edge of sanity, and pushing my limits physically is typically what gets me there" but let me put to you this way: a man travels around the world on plane, gets off at every destination by placing his right foot on the tarmac and then gets back onto the plane and does this repeatedly until he arrives back at his place of origin - he will be able to claim to have travelled around the world but will he be able to really claim that he appreciated the nuances of every destination and friendships created along the Way. To what end do you want to get more done? Could you do more and have done the Camino faster? Maybe you could but your life wouldn’t necessarily be better - productivity is NOT going to fill the void in a person’s soul even though it can take your mind off your problems for a while…. Now I say soul in a deeper philosophical sense and not in the religious sense. I guess what I am trying to convey is run the marathon but walk the walk and deliciously live every delectable moment of the Camino experience…Or in other words, I wonder what would have happened if you kept your daily walking to say 25 km per day and spend the balance of your day trying to make friends or make deep connections with other pilgrims (hikers) and explore each destination.

      @ChrisTarzanClemens  Před 5 lety +1

      I started on October 4th and finished before the end of the month. The first half of the trail many of the albergues were closing for the season by October 15th and toward the end some of them were closing by October 31st. But, there were still several albergues, hostels, and hotels open through the full year. The alberuges were great! Economical, clean, social, but the municipal albergues do not offer blankets for bedding, so someone traveling in October might want to carry a lightweight sleeping bag to stay warm at night in the municipal albergues. The private albergues had blankets, so I preferred staying in them!

    Hola Chris, walking el camino is one of my bucket-list I’m 69 and I feel a little intimidated by the distance that I have to walk. On my 65th birthday I hiked part of the John Muir trail from Mammoth to Yosemite and I loved it. Time is not a problem I’m retired and I want to take my time. I was planning on doing it in August. Any input.

    • @ChrisTarzanClemens
      @ChrisTarzanClemens  Před 4 lety

      That's awesome! The Camino is much less difficult than the John Muir Trail and hiking in the Sierras. It's still a lot of walking, but the days are relatively rolling hills and you have plenty of opportunities to stop for food and drink. You don't need to carry shelter, sleeping bags, and other gear as you do for backcountry trekking, so that also helps. I went in October, and the weather was much cooler. I've heard from people that the summer can be hot, but when it is you just escape to a cafe or bar and get out of the sun for a few hours. I think you'll love it, it's such a great experience! Buen Camino!!!

There did seem to be plenty of wild camping along the way, some areas are forested, but maybe more of the time you'd be posting up in fields or along roadsides or near bridges. If you claim that is not important then why mention it in he title? Ego. I suggest you do it again, slower or faster, doesnt matter, and become mindful of what is the real cause behind your "need to be on the edge, push the limits" thing.Despite what you think it is nothing to brag about. A tip; look inside yourself and ask yourself honestly what do you fear. Meditate on that during the walk. Insight into that is what is the real "living on the edge, pushing the limits". Then , maybe, you will experience the Camino. Good luck and all the best.
