    I was put off from reading this series as it was considered YA, but as I have been reading ... a lot ... during this apocalyptic year I decided to stretch my comfort zone a bit. And holy cheezus am I glad I did. This was definitely the best series I have read in recent memory. Considering that it has murder (on a planetary level), rape, cannibalism, and other general nastiness I still cannot figure why this is considered YA. Also this quote (from Morning Star)... just... wow...
    “And I wonder, in my last moments, if the planet does not mind that we wound her surface or pillage her bounty, because she knows we silly warm things are not even a breath in her cosmic life. We have grown and spread, and will rage and die. And when all that remains of us is our steel monuments and plastic idols, her winds will whisper, her sands will shift, and she will spin on and on, forgetting about the bold, hairless apes who thought they deserved immortality.”

    • @yemmohater2796
      @yemmohater2796 Před rokem +3

      It's considered YA by publishers because the first book has similar tropes to the big ones, I.e. teen cast, caste dystopia, "battle royale", an academy
      But it's very obviously adult "fantasy" in a magickless scifi setting. It was only called YA because the publishers wanted to hop on the YA bandwagon for advertising

    • @itwillbeokay5475
      @itwillbeokay5475 Před 3 lety

      The newer books are definitely darker and it shows some flaws in Pierce's writing. From the onset I could tell certain characters weren't fully fleshed out in Iron Gold, and Dark Age brought it to fruition. I have read every Red Rising book at least 4 times with the exception of Dark Age. Dark Age brings a different perspective with its story telling and I admire the effort, but there are some WTF moments where I questioned whether it this was Pierce's subverting expectations or something else entirely.

      I loved books 1-3 but haven't picked up Iron Gold or Dark Age either. I'm worried the next books will somehow ruin or put a damper on the first 3. (Come to think of it, maybe I'm just jaded by what the new star wars movies did to the original trilogy. hmm..) Don't ruin it for me, but do these new books screw up anything, or are they just as good as the first 3?

    • @tnegras99
      @tnegras99 Před 3 lety +2

      @@GregVandenBosch I dont think they skrew up anything, 3 of the pov characters have little to no affiliation with the first three books. Its a continuation of the story where it left off, but the story is kind of about all the tough stuff and clean up and establishing the new equilibrium that comes after the ultimate victory that you don't see a lot of. It's actually fairly interesting to see, I just find it a little jarring to shift from first person single pov in the first trilogy, to multiple third person pov in the second trilogy.

    • @tnegras99
      @tnegras99 Před 3 lety +1

      I actually am not a huge fan of the second series simply because of the multiple pov thing. Like, there's 4 separate stories and I'm having difficulty remembering any details from any of them. Like, I can't even remember the little red girl's name off the top of my head. I think it stems from that in most multiple POV stories I've read, the character's have all met at some point then split off, while here its 4 people who mostly haven't interacted (basically just Darrow and Lysander a little bit 10 years ago) and supposedly their paths will converge maybe? I do like future Darrow is simply incapable of letting himself experience peace and Sevro is actually more rational than him now

I usually feel let down by the last book because we don't really get to hang out with our characters and sometimes they do rash things just to wrap up a book; however, MS is a perfect blend of getting our characters fully realized and blowing our minds with awesome plot and action. Okay so! On the aspect of the way people and things are represented, the Reds are specifically meant to be both misogynistic and homophobic as a tactic by the Golds so so much of book 1 falls upon this worldview Darrow has of people around him which is really interesting to see. Generally we’re shown that the women around him are capable and dynamic but because we’re in his head and never in a situation where we has to accept that it comes through how misogynistic he is whereas in the coming books where he’s immersed in the lifestyle of the Golds it becomes more evident while in some eras the Golds are bad people, there are also aspects of their society that Darrow can learn from and I love the way Pierce does it.
    Also interesting you mention the flashbacks because his publisher originally asked him to rewrite book 1 as flashbacks and start around where Golden Son does but he insisted starting how he did because of how necessary the aspects of who Darrow is and how the world around him forces him to change as he seeks to change the world around him and I don’t think the same outcome would’ve been present had it been done through flashbacks!
    I hope you enjoy Morning Star! I think you’d HEAVILY ENJOY the sequel trilogy as well as it really sets itself apart and explores some amazing themes and the view of Pierces growth is STUNNING.

Personally, I love his first person pov, because I love Darrow's voice. And yes, the action is incredible and you have to get ready for an epic space battle in Morning Star. Also, the second trilogy is dark. DARK.

    The problem I had with this book was I never bought into Darrow as the hero who was going to bring the whole system down. He was too much of a bleeding heart emotional wreck, he gets played over and over again, he falls into every single trap laid for him...I just didn't buy him as the hero. And I don't buy into his plan to bring down the system through the power of friendship. I think if he had been more cold blooded, if he was the one playing people for his personal ends instead of being played, if he was a darker hero who pretended to care about people to get them on his side while actually not giving a shit about then, I would have bought him more, and I think I would have liked him more. I KNEW he was going to fail at the end of the book. It didn't come as any surprise for me, because he repeatedly got played throughout the entire book. I think if Sevro was running the show, the uprising would go a lot more smoothly.

    Daniel, if you wait a few months to read the second book in a series do you have trouble remembering the plot and characters from the first book? I often do. I don't know if its because I have epilepsy and suffer from seizures but its a problem that affects my reading. Often I have to read a recap of the other books in the series even if its only been a few weeks since I read them

    I guess 1 criticism I would lay on the opening trilogy (have not read past morning star yet) that isn't really a criticism but more a personal preference I guess, is the pacing of all three of them... its all pretty much just one pace, breakneck speed and never slowing down to smell the roses, constantly waltzing from one emergency action packed thrill ride to the next and never stopping lol, I found myself wishing it would slow down a little bit and engage in a bit more worldbuilding etc.... having said that I still view the series so far as a net positive, was good overall and will be looking to continue in the future.
