    I really thought Gene had changed, that he was a good person and had let go of his ego.
    He is now changing the story to paint Barry as a complicated person rather than an evil one, all to ensure that he can exploit Janice's death for personal fame and success.
    He may be one of the least evil people in the show, but make no mistake, he's still evil.

    • @nont18411
      @nont18411 Před rokem +47

      I could list a bunch of people who are less evil than Gene
      - Chris
      - Janice
      - Jim (debatable)
      - John
      - Cristobal (debatable)
      - Lindsay
      - Ryan's dad
      - Ryan
      - Leo
      - Gordon
      - Gene's ex girlfiriend
      Gene is so evil, man. Dude harassed people left and right to the point that his ex lost her job just because they broke up. Dude abused his own students. Dude also abandoned his son TWICE and keeps exploiting Janice's death for his own glory. You only think that he's not that evil because you compared him to Barry.

      @@nont18411 Very good points, but I think there's a difference between being a self centered asshole and being evil.
      Panicking about the responsibility of having a child and running away, getting ex-gfs fired out of spite, crossing the line when being tough on students, and putting your own success over everything else. These are all big-time asshole moves, but there's potential for change and redemption, which he really seemed like he was doing.
      He repeatedly tried to reestablish his relationship with Leo, and when he was successful, he really did have a good relationship with his family. He sacrificed his own pride and potential fame by letting his ex direct his new movie. While he was tough on students, he genuinely was a father figure to Barry and Sally and genuinely cared about them in his own way. He also initially came out of hiding to stop the Barry movie from being made.
      What makes him evil for me was this scene. This was his last chance. He is fully aware of what he's doing, fully aware that he is staining Janice's memory by chasing his own success. He knows Barry is a psychopathic murderer who killed the woman he loved, and yet he is downplaying that just to get a big actor on his movie. He can't change. He can't let go of his narcissism.

      Nie trzeba zabijać, aby być złym. Można łamać ludziom życie, a Gene robi to cały czas. Z wygody i próżności. Kocha tylko siebie. Jest jedną z najbardziej paskudnych postaci w serialu.

    • @nont18411
      @nont18411 Před rokem +14

      @@PaddyRoon7 The epitome of Gene's character is that "You only think he's a good person because you compared him to someone else who's so much worse".
      - Abandoning his kid twice, getting his ex fired out of spite, being "tough" (aka abusive) on students and putting his own success over everything else, no matter who he hurt are potentially redeemable only because he was compared to Barry, a psychopath serial killer who is second most evil character of the show. Without Barry, these kinds of behaviors from Gene will be considered as hateful.
      - He repeatedly tried to reestablish his relationship with Leo, and when he was successful, he really did have a good relationship with his family. The keywords are "when he was successful". When he's not, he abandoned them. Just like what he did before the show started (and that's before Barry). Just like what he did after he shot his son (and that's also without Barry's influence. It's all him.)
      - "He genuinely was a father figure to Barry and Sally and genuinely cared about them in his own way." because the alternative for Gene is Fuches, the most evil character of the show. Any man would be a great father compared to Fuches.
      - "He also initially came out of hiding to stop the Barry movie from being made." The show made it very vague if it actually started from Warner Bros or him giving Warner Bros the idea. But since he already did it with the reporter and then did it again with Warner Bros. He is now completely irredeemable and all those things about him loving Janice was a lie.

      @@nont18411 I'm not just comparing him to Barry, I'm only thinking about Gene himself right now. I genuinely think he didn't deserve to be called evil for his actions before this episode. Bad person? Sure. Evil? I think that's too big a word. Everyone has a different bar for judging people to be evil, though.

    So...
    - Detective Loach, who was Janice's colleague, used Janice's death as a tool to blackmail Barry into killing Ronny because his wife dumped him and dated Ronny in season 2.
    - Barry hallucinated about everyone he has killed standing on the beach, except for Janice, who never showed up there, in season 3. (like Barry totally didn't give af about her)
    - Reporter Lon O'Neil kept interviewing Gene, Barry and Jim to sell his piece about Janice's death and gain more popularity.
    - Gene broke the promise with Jim about not exploiting Janice's death, then told reporter Lon about said story by painting himself as hero. And even after 8 years, he came back to sell Janice's story again to Warner Bros...then half-assed changing his mind a little bit...then back to supporting Barry movie again by rewriting history about Barry to be a more sympathetic character and mentioned Barry killing Janice as a "stupid thing" just to keep Mark Wahlberg in the film.
    Janice might be dead long ago but it's disgusting that these people keep desecrating her corpse for their personal gain...which is why I love this show. It's a straight insult to the exploitainment media like Dahmer show, Pam and Tommy and Blonde.
