  • My beloved Hauptwerk Organ (or rather the SSD of the computer inside) couldn't handle me updating the Hauptwerk application inside the computer as well as me downloading a huge sample set to my small but growing collection of organs.

    It is not in my nature but it is on occasions such as this that I absolutely hate and loathe computers !!! I look back on life before we had the damned things and think life was so much more simple in those days. Do we perhaps put too much reliance on technology? The frustrating this is that when you get an error message, you can't discuss it, you can't dispute it, you can't argue with it.
    Some time ago, a friend of mine was renewing the insurance on his car. The lady at the other end of the telephone was tapping into her computer the responses to the questions. She asked if the car was kept in a garage overnight and my friend said it was not. More tapping, and then my friend asked if that was relevant. She replied that if it was kept in a garage, it was deemed more secure - less likely to be stolen of course - and hence attracted a discount. My friend pointed out that the car was kept either at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle overnight, with floodlights, armed police all over the place and some fairly big gates. It couldn't be more secure. The lady said, "No - the computer says No - no garage, no discount." And that was the end of it.

    Philip was my inspiration to get a hauptwerk organ. The only issue I had was the worry of just what he's discussing with the organ manufacturers being so far from me (Texas). I wound up order a console from Minnesota but having a local vendor install the hauptwerk computer etc. He charged several thousand more than I could have gotten from the console builder...BUT he lives 20 minutes from my house. It's worth it to me to be able to have him come over to fix any issues.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  Před 29 dny

      Hi Titurel! That's is wonderful to hear. It really sounds like you made a good decision because if you haven't built the entire system yourself you really are quite dependent on some expertise from those who built your system.

  • @Kanawha
    @Kanawha Před měsícem +3

    no backups made before the upgrade? as a semi-pro organist, or user dependent on a working computer, backups are compulsory!
    SSD's can fail without warning due to overload/overheating, there are also SSD with heatsink, better suited perhaps to closed confinements of the organ case?
    It wouldn't hurt to replace the SSD every two/three years depending on their duty hours/data througput. They aren't that expensive anymore, you can put the old one in a USB 3 external enclosure so you also have a fully loaded backup version of your complete organ

    • @MrKlassikfreund
      @MrKlassikfreund Před měsícem

      Da die SSD offenbar die Bootplatte war, nützt ein herkömmliches Backup auch nicht viel, da ja erst das Betriebssystem zum laufen gebracht werden muss. Ich empfehle Clonezilla, da kann man Platten oder Partitionen spiegeln. Dieses Programm hat mir schon viel Zeit gespart!

    Yes, that is the downside of buying an all in one solution from one supplier (and everything build in into the console). I don't believe in that and rather do everything myself. I build my own PC's, have my own monitors and also the console or keyboards are stand alone (made or arranged by me). Then I know exactly what is going on, and can control it all.

    Sometimes drives just go bad, and to download a large sample set you have to do a huge write cycle to the drive, so it could have just pushed it over the edge. I wouldn’t blame the organ company, but rather the drive manufacturer.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  Před 29 dny

      Yes perhaps. The company sent me another SSD from another company. Perhaps they have bad experiences with that SSD I started with when the organ was built.

    • @PipeDreamerJacques
      @PipeDreamerJacques Před 29 dny

      @@philipaggesen that’s telling. In either case, they didn’t manufacture the drive, so the reliability of that particular component is entirely dependent on the 3rd party company who made it.

  • @willemnviljoen
    @willemnviljoen Před měsícem

    This is very unusual, SSDs are rated for millions of read-write cycles. Downloading a large sample set should not kill one.
    My only guess apart from a totally random failure is that Noorlander didn’t provide sufficient cooling tor the SSD. I would enquire with them about adding thermal pads to both SSDs as a precaution.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  Před 29 dny +1

    So, you really didn't buy a new organ, just the digital sounds. Basically, you just upgraded or converted a digital organ to another type, which is fine, but when I saw the link for this, I thought you bought an entire new organ, and all the pipes and mechanisms that go with it. Now I get it. Our churches exclusively use Allen organs, since we live close to Allentown, PA, USA. They've never been upgraded, but I think they should be.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  Před 29 dny

      Yes, this is a virtual pipe organ running Hauptwerk but the organ is more or less a computer with a glorified midi keyboard attached. That's why it is crucial that the electronics work perfectly.

    Jeg overvejer at begynde på kirkemusikskolen, og lære at spille orgel. Hvis man skulle have et orgel med pedaler derhjemme til at øve, vil du anbefale at købe seperat hardware og software, eller købe et komplet digitalt kirkeorgel, som en Johannus studio 360 eller Viscount Cantorum trio?

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  Před měsícem

      Hej Julius. Jeg vil anbefale dig at købe et Hauptwerk orgel, hvor du allerede spiller på optaget lyd fra kirker rundt omkring i verdenen. Dels fordi du får ægte optaget orgel-lyd, dels fordi du kan vælge at downloade andre typer af orgler og dermed få adgang til symfonisk-franske, barok-franske, tysk-romantiske eller rene barokorgler.
      Der findes mange Hauptwerkorgel-firmaer, herunder Content, Noorlander, Mixtuur m.fl.

      True! We had the same experience. We wanted to upgrade, so we needed a new PC (€3,000) plus a couple of other hardware items, and Hauptwerk 8 (€600). We had a lot of crashes, and the organ didn't work for 4 months. When it was finally solved, we were so fed up with it that we sold the organ. Now we have a Johannus Opus 360 on order and can't wait! 🥳🥳
      Several reasons for choosing the new Opus 360:
      1. Great audio system (4.1!)
      2. Fast startup system
      3. Every organ style you could wish for. In the past, we had Hauptwerk and Sweelinq, and the truth is: you just need two good sample sets. We only played on Schiedam (Hauptwerk) and Leeuwarden (Sweelinq). The opus has four good ones. Opus 360: Kampen, Amsterdam, Dresden, Raalte. Opus 380: Miami, Dresden, Kampen, Raalte.
      4. User-friendliness on top: no updating, no crashes, no incidents, no... --> just press the button and go.
