If you lose weight, every new movement you can do results in motivation and "addiction" to use that new freedom. He will always struggle with putting on too much weight, but he would never gain weight to that point again, like you wouldn't go and lock yourself voluntarily up in a prison cell. People always tend to not differentiate between the levels of overweight. They see fat as fat but every 10 lbs / 5 kg make a huge impact and difference. And if he will gain weight again it's not that bad as long as it stops somewhere and he refuses to let himself go back to that point. It will always be a struggle but fighting between 220 and 270 lbs is something else than fighting this war at 500 lbs
