Do all centre-backs have to be tall? That’s the question facing Manchester United and their new 5ft9in centre-back, Lisandro Martinez.
Traditionally centre backs are the biggest outfield players in the team, but do they need to be?
With the help of some professionals in the game, Sarah Shephard explains that a good centre-back doesn’t worry about their size. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

So nice to see this come out after Martinez delivered credible performances in the last 3 games on a bounce back after 2 losses. I would rather deal with his shortcomings (if any) over an out and out average defender like the ones we've had. 1 goal conceded in 3 games in the PL is no joke, especially for United who've conceded unnecessarily due to defensive errors. Back your new signing, he has more heart, talent and character in the field than anyone else.
No more maguire halleluja!
@@litti1047 facts!
Shortcomings! Nice.
I’d put “in” in front of credible. That 1 goal that they condeded was more due to Salah’s genius rather than a defensive error, so they could’ve had 3 clean sheets. That’s unheard of, given United’s defensive records these past years
Exactly that. Martinez looks really comfortable on the ball as well right from the off and looks like he actually wants the ball at his feet which is something we’ve lacked at all on the field for years let alone in defence. I like malacia next to him. As questionable as I think the midfield and attack is the defence looks a lot more solid atm and ready for the challenge
Harry Maguire is the golden standard of how not playing to someone's strengths make them look useless. United should just cut loses and sell him.

When was this video made? Martinez's "bad start" has already disappeared with 2 very good performances. And he wasn't even that bad against brentford and brighton. Someone needs to lookup how many times brentford failed to take advantage of martinez.
And that bad start is also due to the whole team not performing well in those 2 opening matches. It's not like everyone but martinez played well.
Agreed, first 2 games he actually pretty decent. The things that makes him looks bad because he should covering Maguire for every failed attempt he makes. Maguire always easily to dragging off by opponents and out from his position. Shaw was nowhere when the team got countered. Leaving Martinez alone.

First game he had to do more work since MAGUIRE was useless as always.
"Bad start" playing alongside Maguire. Happens to every center back.
Seeing as he has won more aerial duels than Varane in the last 3 games, I would think no
Well, I imagine he's won more because he's had more oppurtinity to win more, as every team thinks they are going to be the ones to exploit his height, and just spam lofted balls to him in an attempt to do so. I think it's working in our favour as it's clearly not a weakness for him, and it's easy to defend an approach so one dimensional. I wonder how teams approach will evolve now that they know it's not going to work.
@@samaukland1418 his percentage is higher as well not just volume
@@samaukland1418 Tell that to Ben Mee! 🤣
That's because you've fundamentally misunderstood the aerial duels stat. Aerial duels are defined as both players off the ground competing for an off the ground ball. That's how lisandro was able to come out of the Brentford game without losing an aerial duel despite being beaten in the air easily for the goal on the line. Because he's on the ground and the Brentford player isn't it doesn't count as a lost ground duel either, in fact it's not even recorded negatively against lisandro in any way in mainstream stats.
Often lisandro doesn't get off the ground for contested duels, only free ones... Hence a high aerial duel percentage. He's not good in the air.
@@JoshAFC Have you even watched either the video explaining how short defenders are able to make up for differences in height or Uniteds last 3 games where Martinez clearly showed these principles in action winning multiple headers? Because you sound like you don't. I'm not going by straight statistics either. In Latin football culture, the prized attribute in centre backs is their tackling ability. That's why you get so many centre backs the stature of Ayala, Cordoba, Heinze, Puyol, etc. More agile and better tacklers. In British football culture, tackling has never been viewed as the priority attribute for a centre back. Instead, there's a preference for tall centre backs with an upright stance who rely primarily on positioning to defend. You see this type of centre back sometimes in Latin football, such as Pique. Then you get tackling centre backs sometimes in British football, such as Carragher. Yet there's a clear difference in what the two football cultures want from their centre backs.
tf are puyol and pique latin?
@@EugenesBackpack Latin not latinoamericano, yes. I'd argue the football culture in Latin Europe and Latin America is broadly contiguous. Regarding the shared appreciation of small centre backs, note how Cordoba, Ayala, Heinze, all achieved recognition in Latin European leagues. As a random current example, Chilean Gary Medel has been getting on well as a short centre back in the Italian league for a while now.
You’re forgetting about Mexican Rafa Marquez was 6ft but played with his body on the line in that Barcelona team.
@@frankgallegos1304 Yes, and the Mexican legend centre back Claudio Suarez is only 1.78m.
One thing which must be mentioned is average height. South Americans tend to be about 2" shorter than northern Europeans who are the model for the typical Premier League centre back. Furthermore, in Latin America football is often a route out of poverty for young men who in many cases have suffered malnutrition in childhood and are consequently sometimes shorter than they might have otherwise been.

But he makes a good point of Maguire not being played to his strength not because he isn't good but simply because it hasn't fit the playing style. He would be a solid for the Dyche's Era at Burnley but for us it was easy to exploit his weakness because nothing was (or barely) in sync. Eventually it messed with his confidence. The best thing to do is not wack the guy with words. But begin to evaluate the future whether to get him to adjust to those tactics or use him in games that they think he can stand firmly throughout. The guy is good we see him for England it's unfortunate that his time at United has really deteriorated in terms of performance. I only wish him the best.
More power to Licha, the back 4 for has been showing some promise. Loved the last 2 clean sheets as well.
Funny how “Maguire doesn’t fit the play style” but since he was dropped United have stopped playing out from the back and have a lower defensive line to compensate for De Gea. Maguire successfully played in a high line when Henderson (a sweeper keeper) was in goal in 20/21, and with Pickford for England. If Maguire was a low block defender he’d be playing now, not when United were trying to play out from the back

The only modern day Brit coaches who seems to have proper continental style tactics is maybe Graham Potter. This seems to be a legacy issue in England specifically where defending Is still seen as ‘a big man job’ to win headers and tackle hard. But football has moved on defenders need technical skill to pass the ball now (not just blast it 50 yards every time) reading the game and anticipating opponents movements is more effective, a good football brain has nothing to do with your height and it’s time English football realised that especially when the best team in England have guardiola as manager who has always prioritised technique and finesse over strength and power

Anyone that's watched united so far knows he's been the standout performer. By far the best cb we've had in years and he's made varane look so much better too
This is such a useless topic. What I loved about football growing up was the fact that anyone willing could play. You always leverage your strengths to overcome you weaknesses. Whether you big, small, tall, short, fast or slow you could find a specialty in the sport and contribute to the team. The fact that it is a team sport means you can leverage others' strengths too. There are successful footballers in every position in every size. How can you ask if someone is too short to do a job when there is evidence of them successfully doing it?
Not every topic that's trending or comes across your table is worth entertaining, and I'm disappointed in Tifo for failing to make this distinction in this case.

Martinez is a South American and we know this much they have a different bit of grit in them and bite in their game , if Martinez has that in his game , he won't have many problems. But the problem is he good enough to help UTD .
The legendary Carvalho was not the tallest but he's one of the greatest cb to ever play this beautiful game .
Well said.
His height CAN be an issue, if for example Peter Crouch was in the opposition team and targets him. But those scenarios will only come up a few times a season - and in which case players like Maguire/Casemiro/McTom can be utilised to negate that drawback.
He's (so far) a fantastic signing.
@@samwize28 Not Maguire 🤣
@@akshaypanwar4964 yeh, maybe not maguire to be fair haha
Remember Koscielny? He was not the tallest but was really good
Difficult start??? Mate, he’s been outstanding in the last few games?!
his poor start is due to maguire being absoloutely awful except at being tall
Harry Maguire used to dominate in Leister because they always had very strong defensive midfielders, so he was much more comfortable sitting back as the last man defense, on of his strengths. With united he was always expected to move the ball higher up the pitch and run back on defense or press high to stop counter attacks early which is his weakness. Martinez and Varane suits that style of play perfectly
"Given his difficult start in the Premier League" When was this episode recorded?
Maguire was the problem
No
Varane Martinez reminds me of pique Puyol partnership
This kind of attitude - the fixation on having good ball carriers, midfield profile type defenders etc - does play a significant role in those games that a lot of big clubs have where a team sits deep and plays on the counter, relying on set pieces or route one. You know the type - the 70 vs 30 possession, 24 shots to 2, losing 1-0.
Point being, clubs should recruit and train both bigger and smaller defenders, in order to be prepared for each eventuality.
Why nobody mentions Ivan Cordoba? He was an amazing defender, like AMAZING.
before even starting the video, I think many top quality players have proven that there is never an issue on being too anything as long as the drive and talent is there. Haaland for example was said to flop in the prem, and so far that is not the case. Modric for madrid proved everyone wrong as well as others such as robert pires for arsenal
Who defuq said Haaland would flop? All i heard was praises all summer.
@@NostalgiNorden there was doubt over whether he could perform in the prem. One such example I can recall off the top of my head is Rory Jennings, a Chelsea fan who on sky sports said haaland would flop
He is already better than van dijk
Wow
thats funny
Varane clear of both
anyone who focuses on height over talent in football, has no idea about what football is all about. the greatest players in history have all been short. there's even been amazing Goalkeepers that were short.
Positioning, timing to be right place on the right time is a basic for the defend It's more base on psychic ability that can measure situation what might happen in curial Time. This is more base on intuition and sensitive of the sorrounding. Maguire don't have any of that
Apparently tifo only cover man utd these days. Thanks for a player profile on their entire squad and nothing on anyone else. Super interesting seeing as these topics are never covered by anyone else.🙂👍
It's literally their first video on United in like 2 months
Watch the video. They only mention Martinez in the beginning……………..
@@vta2265 obviously you're joking.
@@loganz20939 I'm good, tifos content is starting to become boring.
It's not a player analysis on Martinez. If you had you seen the video, you'd have realised they just used the controversy around Martinez to present an analysis on how modern centre backs are evolving in the game. Brentford's Ben Mee has more mentions in the video than Martinez.
Revisiting this and Martinez hasn't really done much wrong, such a gem of a player.
yeah this was definitely written before he got consecutive motms, nice to see the argument of height not mattering for a defender, it’s an obvious advantage but a good defender makes up for what he lacks in height
I feel like people who are good defensively and shorter that play CB end up being put into midfield of full back because coaches think you need a big CB and that's may be why you don't see a ton of short CB's
Can you make a video on the value of atmosphere in football stadiums, like when opposition teams go to Anfield and have such a difficult time because of the atmosphere inside.
Guy was god tier vs Liverpool. Never heard of him before but the guy has incredible attitude and stamina, much more compromise with the team than many other past transfer from Man Utd
Not forgetting the strengths of a tall centre half when it comes to their goal threat on corners
“Difficult start in the premier league” what??? Man’s been KILLING it at the heart of defence. Clean sheets consecutively since partnering up with Varane & not the fridge.
clearly the video was made after the first two games. now that he's played amazing in the last three games i don't know why they bothered to make this video...
Thiago Silva is 5'11" and Marquinhos is 6'0". They are considered shorts for their position, if look at it. But they are quite fast, they tackle very well and even have good position for aerial defensive and offensive plays.
I'm confused. Why are they using the imperial system? I thought the metric was used in England.
Martinez has just won our POTM and has been the standout for 3 games now. I haven’t been this confident in our defence since Rio and vidic
The thing about Martinez, what he lacks in height, he makes up for in distribution, tenacity and aggression. But that kinda begs the question, he could have made a perfect DM so why didn't ETH play him there at first because of how much ManU was struggling in that department.
Lisandro has passion. something our CBs have lacked since the days of vidic.
Height isn't of upmost importance but it does matter as other teams will see a weakness and target it with overloads which makes it difficult to play against. If you're good at heading, it won't matter e.g. Tim Cahill is 5'10" and much better at heading than 6'1" centre back Joe Gomez for example who lost all 8 of his aerial duels against Newcastle.
The problem is that short players who are good in the air are rare. That's why Timmy Cahill and Lisandro are/were novelties. Ditto with tall muscular players who are agile at the same time.
It’s like “do you have to be tall to play basketball?”
No, but it certainly helps, I’m two minutes in and the best points have already been made. It depends on how the club plays, the role of the Defender, and whatever works as an advantage.
I know the video may have been in the making for a while, but Martinez along with Varane have been pivotal in United maintaining 2 clean sheets in the last three games and winning 3 out of the last three.
