Each player has 2, they can move anywhere on the board but cannot capture, they serve only to get in the way and slow things down. It’s called the Bureaucrat.

You should give it a try, it's one of those games that looks boring to an outsider, but once you learn how to play it suddenly becomes more interesting than most video games.

I prefer chess with short-range firearms, you can kill the king like any other piece and win.
In chess with firearms there would probably be Armor Vehicle units to shield important pieces, a random directional deviation in regards to the shooter shot's destination to avoid camping (with different units having more or less accurate shots and time between deployment) and other tweaks
The best strategy for chess with short range firearms is to shoot the opponent directly.
The Chess boars became the Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Croatia in the middle ages too

My actual attempt at adding a new piece in chess:
The Thieves
Each side has 2 pieces
They can move and kill opponents anywhere withing a 5x5 radius, but only if they are pawn pieces
That would ruin the game. A piece with those abilities would be able to block the advance of all the enemy pawns in the endgame phase. So, having a thief in the endgame would make you able to keep the enemy's pawns stuck away from the promotion squares, granting you the victory or at least a draw.

how about mercenary troops? both player can control them duting their turn, but they can't capture kings, queens or other mercenary troops.

Like not telling someone they forgot to press their timer and being able to distract them with a conversation until it runs out
move pon three spaces catch the opponent off guard and you unlock the elephant
There is a self destruct cheat code that activates when you shake the table
If i recall correctly if you move the pawn in a certain way it lets you play as vader

New piece ideas:
Archer: Can move one space in all directions and can only capture pieces directly in front of it, but it's capture range reaches to the edge of the board.
Necromancer: Can move two spaces in any direction. Any piece that it captures (except the King) gets turned to it's side.
Calvary: Similar to the Knight, except it moves in a T shape and instead of hopping over other pieces in it's way, it just barrels through them and captures them.
Elephant: A blast from the past updated to modern times! This mammoth piece takes up 4 spaces with it's girthiness, it can move one "space" diagonally and capture any pieces in it's way, but there's a cost to all that thicc. Whenever it moves, you have to wait a turn to move it again.
Cannoneer: Takes up two spaces vertically, and can only move one "space" vertically. It's similar to the archer as it can only capture directly in front of it, but it's capture range reaches to the edge of the board.
I hope some mods see this comment and take my ideas into consideration :)

they should add new unit:
-sniper: they can pierce through two units
-spy: can disguie as enemy pawn, with reduced movement but cant be killed while in disguise
-tank: takes 2x2 space
spy seems fun, maby you could add personalized interactions between pieces. For example bishops can capture spies, and unduisguised spies can only capture bishops, or rooks are immune to snipers

It's awesome, everybody should play it.

@Graff He's propably not. He hasn't posted anything on Yt, but he's still active on Discord and tweeted a teaser for a new video on April this year. He hasn't said anything about quitting either, do he's propably just busy with school work and other stuff.

The clock update is pretty good. I haven't gotten to play any new versions since medieval times but that's on me
Fun fact: In 1972, a puzzle was made where white had to underpromote to a rook to vertical castle and checkmate the black king. Due to this, FIDE had to change the rules of chess for castling. This was update 1.1, and was the only Bug Patch.
