A patent on a bell siphon with a screen. Monsanto/Bayer would be proud.

Still the same amount of water. Why does a lot of water at once clog the filter gravel less than a small amount of continually?

because the pressure and water flow is spread out over the entire area is my guess.

It appears that by "flooding" the leach field with the total volume of waste water at one time, it more evenly distributes the waste water through the whole field, so it doesn't trickle and stack waste only at the beginning of the field. This should allow the biodegradation of the waste over a larger area, feeding more microorganisms during the process. Think of it as pouring water from a bucket 1 cup at a time starting at the corner of a hot driveway. You will cool only a fraction of the driveway, and only that portion would remain cool. The rest of the driveway would stay hot all day. If you dumped the whole bucket of water onto the driveway all at once, you would cool most of the driveway, but it would have a chance to evaporate, and slowly recover heat.
