1st: A lot of folks want to know why I did not install slotted, drilled, vented rotors and a different pad.
ANSWER: I only do what I am asked to do by the customer, it is not my car
2nd: Why are the front hubs splined?
ANSWER: This is the same wheel part number bearing used in the 2008 to 2015 Cadillac CTS AWD. GM just fitted them to the Camaro too...
I wasn't saying you should consider drilled and slotted rotors. I was saying the customer should. It probably won't be long before those rotors start drinking red bull all over again! At then end of the day if they pay the bill the customer's are the boss. I guess that would be one hub you don't have to worry about the wheel flying off if you forget to torque the axle nut to spec on a STS.
Drilled and slotted are only a gimmick anyways. Until you get into larger diameter rotors that aren’t 12”, and more like a17 or 18” diameter rotor
A lot of the track guys are back to using plain platters - last longer - don't crack.
I know they don't use drilled anymore, but slotted are still super popular here.
Drilled rotors will fail much sooner than these stock solid ones when racing.
It's nice to know that someone actually uses their performance car for what it was made for and not just for getting groceries and sitting in a garage.
I have a 19 2SS Camaro and I only use it for normal driving and it is garage kept. I only take it out when I'm going out somewhere special. I drive my other car for errands. I see nothing wrong with leisure driving.
Got a 23’ ss in 2022 & 4 months ago I got a new set of tires & today I get new break pads 😮💨😮💨😮💨 I be driving her like as if she’s stolen!
He brought it to the right place. Wish there were more mechanic like you. Enjoy your videos.
Eric, this video is what brought me to SMA. I bought a 2015 2SS Camaro since watching this, and honestly, I've given SERIOUS thought to coming up from SC to have you work on it. There's something to be said for a mechanic you can trust.
Must be a real treat to work on a rust free car that's not driven in the salty muck.
Unfortunately, Eric did not work on Matt Farah's Million Mile Lexus....
Just my thoughts! A clean job for a change!
Ya gotta love the brake job videos. About a year ago I put the 4 piston Brembos all the way around on my G8. I bought new one's from amazon The silver one's that came on the CTSV with Camaro front rotor's and Chevy SS rears. It upped the Sex appeal seeing these through the wheels at least in my mind which is somewhat warped. Thank you for taking the time to so all of us.
That's about the easiest brake job I've seen, but that "...shaking like a millennial drinking Red Bull" takes the cake. Too funny!! Thanks Eric.
If you've ever had Brembos, they make the job so much easier that it's worth the added cost of the calipers regardless if you take your ride to the track or not.
Eric,
Great video! I agree that those must be the easiest brakes to work on ever. Have to say though that the best part of the video was the last 3 seconds when Mrs O. pointed at the camera as you said '...you can do it.'
Thank you and God bless you both
Paul
That Red Bull Millennial joke buckled my knees.
Miss the smell of brake fluid. Ahhh.
Thanks for all you do!! Jim.
One small note I discovered: GM procedure states you are to replace the caliper mounting bolts if you remove them. The angle torque spec indicates that these are a torque to yield bolt. They are single use. You could probably use them multiple times but I wouldn't be surprised if the repeated stretching over time will cause them to come loose. Also, coat bolts with loctite completely for the first 2/3rds of the bolt..
Seems kind of crazy to me. But, it is a Brembo performance item made for a performance car. Not surprising that something like this would be the case.
This was a great video. Fantastic camera angle to see the springs and the caliper pins too. You are a fantastic mechanic Eric.
"Shakes like a milennial drinkin' Red Bull." Hilarious!
Monster for us Gen X'ers. Heh.
😂😂
I believe you are of great value to the Watkins Glen crowd. Both speed and safety will benefit from your attention to detail.
When ever I feel down. I watch your vids. Thank you.
Ooow posh looking calipers and italian performance pads, very nice :-D.
You may think that watching brake pads being changed is boring.... Nope every one is different and you always do a spot on job :-D
Mrs. O always has her "tough love" look on when the camera's on. What a lady. You are a lucky human being.
Nice that you were able to get those pins out w/o issues. Last time i worked on a Brembo brake setup (Cad CTS V) the pins were seized. Had to cut them out. Liked your Redbull comment, was funny. As far as the splined hubs go, that's a very common thing, all the auto companies share parts between models. Sometimes, there'll be parts shared between companies. A good example is the steering columns, Chrysler used Saginaw columns for many years. For those that don't know, Saginaw is a GM parts division.
Beautiful car!! I love working on the brembo callipers by far the easiest to work on and I love the fact when you buy the pads and disk they send out all the one use parts.. well they do if you buy authentic parts..
Did one last week. I put Centric parts on it. Me and the customer were happy. He brought it back for one more adjustment. The parking brake. Good stuff. Really nice car. And, Fast.
I have these same exact calipers on my 2SS. Never changed the rotors myself. This video made me appreciate them more and I will be doing this on my own from now on. You made it look fun. The shop i went to didnt even use brembo pads.
Love the channel man always like watching fellow mechanics I might learn something new
I like your style. Straight forward and easy to understand. Earned a sub
Great video. The caliper torque - what it ended up being after the 90° turn, has sparked a lot of debate on the ‘expert’ forums! TTY bolts, etc. Friggin tight! Thx for posting.
always nice to see the lovely MRS, O
Yes Eric is very lucky, she is very nice on the eye :)
#1. This was a sexy brake job.
#2. You need a television show.
#3. I commented, liked and subbed! (In that order)
We have those torque wrenches a school. They are really great. So glad to see you have the best tool for everything.
G'day Mr. O., & Mrs. O!! Another fine brake job! (Replacing OEM Brembo brakes for a Chevrolet Camaro, and flushing out all the old brake fluid.) By the way... You both, have a wonderful sense of humor! At they end of the video, you guys had me really cracking up! Thank you!
Cheers! 😊✌🏼🏎❤️
Good thing that Branick has a diaphragm to keep the bad air separate from the brake fluid.
El Cheapo Wouldn't want all of Eric's bad air touching that brake fluid!!! Might cause a master cylinder to fail, or an ABS pump! Ouch. 🤣
Brake jobs on Brembo calipers are the best! I did my first brake job on my SRT8 at almost 60k miles. Pulled the stock Brembo pads out and they still had more than 1/4" of pad material. I don't race SCCA I do drive her hard but I do engine brake all the time and the 392 with the Nag1 engine brakes well. Brembo all the things!
Notice how you can just blow on brake parts when you use a case of brake clean a day. The moisture in your breath is 50% brake cleaner. A dab of never seize on the ball on inside of retaining pin will make future changes easier.
I'm gonna buy stock in the brake clean companies. With Eric O. at SMA, my ROI will be incredible! lmao!
Keep up the good work, fella. I'm about an hour and a half away from ya, so I might be getting a hold of ya to redo the front end on my car. You do awesome work and your videos speak for themselves.
Thanks for the video, got a 2016 sedan Chevy SS, with bremdos. Same same brakes. Getter done thanks to you.
Have a great weekend,🤠💯👍
I like the way the post office is right across the street... Small Town Merica....
i loved the GAAA ZING from the brake cleaner scene !!!.....great video as always....thank you !!!!
Oh, they looked purdy after you burnished those babies up. Thanks Dr. O!
Outside the Nürburgring in Germany there are little drive-up kiosks where they will change out your pads and rotors after you roast them. Just a guy with a floor jack. Never did check the prices.
If they wait on you hand and foot, they will charge you an arm and a leg ;) lol
@@NRecob if you drive Nürburgring, you have money and don't give a shit. I saw every car on there and many accidents and drove a few laps myself. Not cheap, but fun
Funny, I watch you doing your best on jobs and it is very entertaining, but I feel I was with you helping.. I'm then so exhausted. Wifey then comes and tells me to mow the lawn. Dreams shattered.🙄
Mrs. O always gives me a chuckle.
As road racing tires allowed greater track speeds in the 1960’s, race teams began seeing a great loss in brake capability. In that era of organic and asbestos based pad friction material, a problem occurred with the adhesives used to fasten the pad to the steel backing plates. As the temperature of the pads increased, the adhesive would break down and cause a layer of gas to form between the rotor and the pads. That vapor layer retained heat in the rotor and acted as an “air-bearing” high-pressure area between the pad and rotor.
By drilling holes in the rotor surface those gasses were able to be dissipated into the vented center of the rotor, no longer interfering with the pad to rotor friction.
.Since asbestos based brake pads were outlawed in the 1990’s, new materials and bonding adhesives have been developed. The now common ceramic based pads do not produce the outgassing problem in any conceivable street use, so there is no real function
Dang, Sir you really know your stuff, I love to hear from professional ppl, who explain to teach not to condescend. Thank you Sir for the lesson I never knew about this.
Way to go Mrs O keep that young man on his toes!
Finally, I was hoping you would do some Brembo's one day!
You didn't have beep the horn on the way out the door on this one, everybody heard the the Chevy Thunder coming out Ha!!!
Not to be confused with a Prius!
Everybody heard the Chevy bonging lol. I can’t buy one cause of this reason. Also the BMW chime and their general crap quality keeps me from buying one of those too.
15:30 Eric I was saying to myself no, it doesn't matter which way you orient the pads as they're all the same but you worked it out so scratch that idea! My Grandma always taught me when bleeding brakes always start at the caliper(bleeder) that has the longest route from the Master Cylinder. Mrs O cracked me up at the end when she was taking the PI$$ because my very own Mrs O does the same! I'd be recommending drilled & slotted rotors to that guy (although they will most likely crack if they cook them) & great call on the dot4, another fantastic video Eric, love those fancy editing skills! 👍
My 2012 Regal has the same front Brembos, this video's been helpful.
Thanks for the detail !!! Really well done.
Sunday/raceday driver. Nice car. Thanks Eric!
If this guy is going to do track days at the Glen he might want to upgrade his set up to the Slotted and Vented disks like BREMBO-CAMARO-PKG-RT4001A1K for better performance but do all 4. Brembo are great but pricey. But you do get what you pay for with them. Just a thought. Love the channel Eric. Learning a lot from your videos.
Love that track (Watkins). Beautiful track, lots of history, beautiful area (finger lakes). Drove it a few times. I'm surprised the guy doesn't do the maintenance himself on a track car.
I have been binge watching these videos and every time he busts out the brake clean I cant help but giggle.
Another great video Eric. I like it when you introduce your family in your videos. It shows how family man you are. God bless you.
shaking like a millennial drinking red bull....best line I've heard on the internet!
you can just tell, this guy loves what he does
I think Mrs O wanted to "test drive" the Camaro also.
The double screwdriver method for seating the calipers works ok, but it has been my experience that sometimes the pistons can slowly walk back out if 1 isn't quick enough to install the new pads. So I bought 1 of those scissor type tools to seat all 4 pistons at once. It has a small T thumb screw handle that usually is long enough, though sometimes I had to substitute a regular bolt with added length. Note that the rotor cannot be installed when using this tool ( I believe I got it through Mac ) Also 100% agree with the upgrade to DOT 4. I did that on my Challenger, and for whatever reason, the brakes feel better, and the pads seem to last longer.. Can't tell ya why, just sayn from my experience.. Good vid!
Thanks for the thorough breakdown
NICE Video....! Sweet Car, Mr. O is on point.... and Mrs. O is looking super SWEET....!
I do like those Brembo brakes. Nice and easy to work on
hey mr o and little os,hope all is well with everyone, well done, great job as always.
i have a fire breathing 2013 Camaro SS, changing the pads and calipers was a pretty easy job. Need to open that thing up with a pair of Kooks LT headers :) sounds amazing with the NPP chevy exhaust.
I was so glad to see Eric put the caliper bolts back on with a torque wrench. With an impact you can literally destroy the threads in the caliper because Brembo calipers are typically aluminum. Many people go gorilla on them tightening and loosing them and next thing you know bye bye threads. Same with the bleeders.
I was just thinking where is that brake cleaner music and then BOOM! Pulled it out fast that time caught me off guard.
CYA!!! video proof of torquing is a good thing here. Customer admits he races it and the old parts looked like it too. Customer can’t come back to Eric in the case of something coming off, wheel etc. nice!
Good vid. Always start on rear bleeder on brembros tho that's all nice I got to see how they bolt up the feed line for my g8 change.
Excellent! Saved me almost $800!
Another amazing vido Mr.O!
Awesome dude thanks for teaching us the right way
lived up to expectations ...
brake clean, brembos and dot4 goodness :-P we all got our fix .
Wow, I’m impressed the brake pads are made in Italy! I didn’t realize Italy still had any factories left, as their economy seems to be 99% tourism based.
And YES!!! I definitely do wish all break jobs were like that
Great video Eric O
I just bought a collector owned 2010 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS 6MT, with the sunroof and Ground Effects package. It only came with barely 20k miles, and some rubber internal stuff went bad, like the oil cooler gaskets, but the leak isn’t TOO bad for now.
I actually got it from a Chevrolet dealership about 35-40 mins away from me. I bought 3 yr/36k mi extended warranty on top of it, and that whole dealership and all the management have been giving me a run-around and lying, ignoring my requests blatantly, etc….
I hate stealerships.
And yes, I realize that the 2010 is a horrible 1st year release model, with the exception of the rest of the 5th (11-13) and 5.5 (14-15) gen Camaro SS’. Dare I say the 6AT (6L80) option is better, even though it comes with a bunch of fuel management and cylinder deactivation econ stuff, which does limit some decent power…
almost thought we witnessed pads installed backwards, then I removed my head from my hind quarters and said dummy that's the right front and the rotation is that way, unless its some new "reverse racing competition" lol.
debating if I need more sleep or time away from all the "idiot devices", I feel as if I'm slipping :))
This video saved me so much money
These are the brakes! Nice work
I missed your brake videos. LOL I got my fix!!!
I know this is old, but I work at an auto parts store. That leaf symbol on the brake pad box means that the pad material is Organic. Usually the economic brake pad choice.
Ran one of these in the Doug Foley racing experience. Great times. Any car guy reading this look it up. It had drag radial, a tune and some other mods. Ran 12.9-13.1 at 101-106 mph. Fun times. Couple hundred bucks but worth it. They travel all around the country. Schedule online.
Drive must not no how to drive .Times should of have been way better than that
Nice to see that 5th gen in another video Eric! Sounds like the owner takes the car to SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) events as Watkins Glen is a road course track (kind of a historical one too if I'm not mistaken). I'm am surprised though that if that's the case he didn't opt for slotted & cross drilled rotors, at least in the front where rouhly 70% of the braking force is🤔... either way another cool episode!
great video. appreciate the work and info.
Great job again like always
Thanks for the video.
Finally a video on a car I own! Just did these last month on my 2010 Camaro SS. Easiest brake job ever.
''It shakes like millinnials on red bull". That was brilliant I love it! I can not stop laughing this man is killing me.
I like that car, and it sounds ace. I really want one!
Super Awesome, as always great video!
Wouldn't he have been better off with an aftermarket drilled and slotted rotor if heat is an issue? Maybe Chebby should have put some vents in the fender aimed at the brakes.
Good job as always! Good to see the brake fluid in action, I always say "A day without Eric using brake fluid is like a day without sunshine" you (well, the brake fluid really) are my sunshine... my only sunshine... you make me happy.... when skies are grey!... too much? sorry... I'll just go now... Enjoy your vacation!
EDITED TO ADD: Doh! I just noticed your explanation for not using drilled and slotted aftermarket rotors. I'd change my post but I really can't be arsed...
Most shop would not go thru the effort you do to do the job right like you do.
Have the same car. Same brakes too. Had to swap the semi metallic brembos out for some hawk ceramics
You my sir just received a new subscriber
So that's how it's done with fancy Brembo's.
Eric got to feel what real power is :D You need Brembo brakes when you go that fast :D
I was wondering if it's the blown 6.2?
No the supercharged 6.2L came out in 2012 on the ZL1 Camaro I believe
Hayward's Automotive Eric didn't mention if it was ZL1 which is why I was wondering. I thought you guys would 'tinker' with them over there as it's a track car! We really don't see them that often over here (late model Camaros), maybe 1 a month at most but plenty of stuff with the 6.0 & 6.2's pushing decent numbers!
It's a 2011 SS. I remember it when he put the exhaust system on it.
Sweet car, nice work!
Thanks for the entertainment.
Awesome video. Neatness and detail. 5*
Another great job A+
Come on, fess up Eric O! That's your own sweet Sunday ride...
I WISH!
nice to see your town does the hometown hero banners
Nice work
That's tighter than a Banshee! If he's working them that hard, I would consider some drilled and slotted rotors with directional cooling vanes.
You should have let Mrs. O take a Hot Lap in the Camaro! Off camera of course! LOL
FF pads. Pretty good pads. I just did a brake job and was surprised to find my local pads were FG pads. Premium to be sure but still.
Very good video - greetings from germany!
