In this episode, it’s a battle of high-performance SUVs with very different powertrains: the thunderous Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and the silent but speedy Tesla Model Y Performance. 4:21British guy says he “hit the Apex perfectly“. However, at 4:21 he is about a car length away from the apex, i.e. the cone.
Even if you were to make the argument that the most effective apex is later in the arc, you could’ve still chosen a line that got you closer to the flag.

You should race electric cars with a full battery . This one around 40% has a noticeable decrease in power. Also track mode makes the car slower but able to sustain a stable level of performance for longer. So you really penalised the EV.

Not the start nor finish I expected for the first race. This format really shows how balanced a car is across acceleration braking and handling. Well done
You forgot to mention that the Dodge is 2x more expensive than the Tesla.

Bro, the dodge is worth it for the price. Think about it, better top speed, better quality, more comfortable, and better handling. Quick in straight line isn’t everything, give the Durango a 1/2 mile and it’ll gap the Tesla more than the gaps between its panels. And it actually makes sound. I do give Tesla props though for the insane launches though.

Track Mode in the Model Y is terrible for straight-line acceleration. It cools the battery off and severely limits acceleration over 40 mph. You also had just over 100 miles of range which is way less than half a battery. You were handicapping the Tesla for no reason. You should have navigated to a supercharger to heat the battery. That gains at least 50 HP on the top end. Track Mode is not for Drag racing with this vehicle.
Yea, no excuse either. There is a V3 Supercharger 10 minutes away from the site.
Noticed Edmunds has been racing the MY with low SOC all the times. I guess no paid press trips from Tesla 😂

Severely handicapped the MYP (30ish% SOC and track mode on) and it still won I’m genuinely shocked 😮 full charge and track mode off and it wouldn’t even be close
you get max power until you hit 70% then it goes down after 50% but the the reason why they did that so it can corner better sense the model Y likes to understeer alot so when cornering it will help it which it does but realistically the have similar power as the durango has a irl 0 to 60 in 3.3 seconds and a quarter mile in like 11.7 seconds while the model Y is 3.4 seconds and 11.7 to 11.8 seconds.

Motortrend also ran a 12.0 sec. quarter mile though several others got 12.1 sec. as their fastest time.

Track mode made the MYP slower, My Model Y LR with Acceleration Boost does 0-60 in 4.2 and the 1/4 mile in 12.55. The Performance should do the 0-60 in 3.5 and the 1/4 mile in less than 12 sec.
I think Tesla's figures are with the one-foot rollout so in this kind of race expect to lose a fraction of a second on the 0-60
He just didn't floor the throttle properly on the first race I think. People aren't used to smashing the pedal to floor.
the acceleration numbers where wrong on both of them as the durango hellcat does 3.3 seconds and 11.7 or 11.8 quarter miles while the model Y performance does it 3.5 seconds and around 11.7 and 11.8 seconds.
State of charge was very low at 108 miles remaining which is roughly 35 to 40%. 12.5 is correct at that charge level.

My long range model y runs 12.78 in the quarter. Actual time run and that’s at 113mph.
The best race type in the world wish you could put at least 3 races a week with a shorter version

The reason why it’ll get ahead of the Durango is because of the instant power and 4wd. But give the Durango enough time and it will catch up to it.
@@benjaminmatute9085 Not the model X plaid lmao. Durango stands zero chance of catching up. Plaid puts 1020HP till its speed limit of 163mph. Durango has a peak if like 700 hp and takes a while to hit that peak and changes gears etc.
That Tesla is a beast. And such an incredible bargain. It's not just the purchase cost, but also the running cost.

A brand new Tesla Model Y Performance is $54,000 before the $7,500 tax credit. It is MUCH less than this video indicates.
EDIT: It is $51,000 before the $7,500 tax credit now.
It's a 2020 model, so that was the price when it was brand new. Not really a fair comparison for price, but definitely makes the difference even more in Tesla's favor now with the new price cuts
7500$ tax credit only applies if you make under 170k$ a year, I believe...

Model Y launches faster if you do not have it in track mode. Track mode is for tracks, not drag racing.
Why was your Tesla so slow? Low battery? Were the tires not stock/correct psi? Did you try *without* track mode? Sure it’s quick in the corner, but the start is so slow compared to every performance y I’ve driven or watched online.
It had around a 30% SOC + track mode that’s why.
I absolutely love everything about the Durango. Would love to own one. That engine note, ability to tow, and long road trips
thats definately what I like about my tesla - I can go fast every light, every straight, and not call any attention to myself.

For the Model Y or Durango? Regardless why would it make less power overall…? Unless it’s only using one axle, it would be making the same power because of drivetrain loss

@@ayushmalpeddi2793 when the model Y is in 50/50 mode both motors are at full power. But when you switch it to 40/60 it doesn't increase the rear motor power, it decreases the front motor power. I think the model Y would've had a better time if they would have left it in 50/50 and kept the traction at -10

The launch was more dependant on the driver than the car to be honest.

It was the Tesla's race to lose. An EV vs a 3-row SUV, would expect the EV to win every time.

I just bought a friends Model 3 Performance and have put my Durango Hellcat for sale. Crazy , right?! The Model 3 is faster (3.1s), has way more tech and cameras, and autopilot; BUT of course the Durango is more spacious, can tow a boat or trailer and sounds amazing (it's alive!). Tesla is way faster and whips everyone's butt and it's incognito. The Tesla was only $25k (2019) and the Hellcat selling for $85k. Plus I will save $5k /yr in fuel after paying the electric bill! If I like it, maybe a Plaid is next? No more premium fuel, oil changes, trans fluid, gears, pistons and so many moving parts to break. I have another older truck to tow with... Time will tell.
You should do a Model X Plaid next.

Update on pricing… Model Y Performance base price is now $54,490, and after a $7500 federal tax credit, $46,990…
You could buy two of these for less than the HellCat… and it’s faster.
And ide still take the Durango.
Should definitely do about two or three races before switching drivers so they can try to brake later or try something different to win before giving up the seat for the next driver.

They might be doing a few takes, and we just see the best ones they selected.
Brake fade might be an issue. They’re braking very hard. After a couple of times they don’t work as well so it will throw off the results. Also most likely the cars are press cars or rentals and repeat runs will cause excess wear. With that said I agree multiple runs would be ideal.

Good point, however that always seems to be Musk's way. When the competition starts catching up or exceeding his cars, he doesn't allow it to happen for long. Case in point, Taycan vs Model S. However that's definitely a different $$$ level.

That spec Tesla model y performance can now be had for $58,130 including destination and is eligible for the $7500 federal tax credit. $50,630 is an insanely good deal for what you're getting.

What 12.5 seconds in the quarter mile for the Tesla!😮 in recent test it was 11.8 and 0 to 60 in 3.7. Looks like track mode makes the Tesla slower or the surface is not ideal for getting the best times. Great race.
That 11.8 was done before the software update and with default settings.
Track mode was slower because they set the power distribution to 40/60 from 50/50. All this did was reduce the power of the front motor.

I am still seeing times with people with the draggy device getting 11.8 to 12.1 and below 4 seconds without using track mode. Other people that engage track mode when doing quarter mile and to 60 are slower. Thanks for responding.
@@rickeybarnes6471 No. The software update ADDED a track mode so you can change the power split distribution. They didn't need to use the track mode in the race and if they had of stayed with the sport mode then they would have ran the stock 11.8 or better time.

Dear Edmunds. For any Tesla, don’t use track mode unless you’re hot lapping on an actual track. For drags, it over cools the battery, and reduces horsepower. Oh, and charge the car up before competition.
Now lets see EV6 GT vs MYP
The ev6 gt will humiliate the myp. I think that even the GV60 preference will be faster.

@@bigdi77 re read the statement . It’s not the acceleration that I’m saying it wins at . The ev6 runs skinnier tires and has more mass to throw around . About 300-400 lbs heavier and less tire means it’s going to handle poorly compared to the y .
Ev6 has charging infrastructure issues. Until it can use the Tesla network I don't recommend it.

Amazing model Y , it can do so much more including camp mode which I love and got the self driving trial, I loved it. Price for such a fast car and many features is unbeatable.

You see who the more aggressive driver off the block is. The turn (different sizes and bases affected time) causes the Durango to lose time.
I remain unconvinced that in a true drag race - straight away, the Durango doesn't consistently win.
Notice the time between races, it's even longer before editing took place. Reason for this is Tesla's have to cool down or programming protocol will reduce Tesla's horse power.
And with all that time sitting, the Durangos Supercharger heat soaks, reducing power for the second run. Overall with the Y being significantly lighter, I'm impressed with the whale boat which is the Durango.😂
Not true. It takes several minutes of full power to overheat the battery on a 3/Y. You could do 10 U drag races back to back no issues. And I know one of my car is a 3 ... Runs 11.6s@119.5mph all day and I use it for AutoX several times a year, never had an issue overheating the car. It happens on track days if you run more than 10 min without cooling down

Not really, ev torque is something else plus the fact that the battery puts the cg way lower in the Tesla, Makes sense especially in the turns. However the noise of a motor and the >5 min fill up will always prevent me from buying an EV.
Give it the 1/2 and the Durango will gap the MYP

What is the best setting for track mode on the model y for straight line drag race?
To have track mode off. Track mode cools your battery, for drag racing you want your battery to be warm. One trick is to navigate to a near by supercharger to make the car warm up the battery before the race.
How long does it take to recharge as opposed to a fuel stop? Also, what is the most common way we produce electricity?
Just bought a ‘23 Durango Hellcat last weekend. Friend has a Tesla MYP and wants to race this weekend. You answered that race for me. But, I’d still take the Hellcat for the sounds it makes. Truly glorious!

Check my page... this race was not expected given the numbers. 3.5 to 60 in the Durango is cake and mid 11s in the 1/4 with upper teen mph... I don't know what happened here but I suspect this was far from ideal conditions.
Pulley/tune/headers/E85 then race your friend again after this

@@bxi1547 depends on which tesla and which hellcats, chargers and challengers weigh less so they’ll do better, but not off the line (unless at drag strip) since they’re RWD… plaids are way faster than 3/y performances so you’ll need almost 1100whp + to beat those
I'm a hellcat mopar fanboy but there is no denying how amazing this Tesla is. I guess I'd get one when I'm able to move to full electric.
Friend of mine drank so much mopar koolaid that he’ll tell you if a hellcat lost a race, it was staged or something. He can’t accept a hellcat losing in any way

EV6 GT:
60 mph: 3.2 sec
100 mph: 8.0 sec
1/4-Mile: 11.6 sec @ 119 mph
Tesla Model 3 performance:
0 - 60 mph in 3.1 seconds,
100 mph in 8.2 s, 1/4 mile in 11.5 s at 100.7 mph

I think sending 60% of the power rear wasn’t the best idea. 50/50 is what Tesla uses.
I think the Durango ran into issues with drag after it got past 60 mph. Which isn't uncommon in suvs period. This was like racing a m&m VS a Starburst. That extra power is meant to help compensate for the high speed drag.
Yep. Not only does the Durango have a larger front surface area (A) than the Y, its drag coefficient (Cd) is .38 versus the Y's .23. Total drag is Cd*A*(Velocity^2 / 2). The faster the vehicles go, the more air resistance pushing back on the Durango, and that proportional difference increases as they go faster. Add that the Durango weighs about 1150 lbs more, which impacts energy needed to accelerate, and amount of braking power needed to slow down, and it makes that Durango's powertrain that much more impressive...
They have slammed this same powertrain into the Challenger (Black Ghost) and it beat the model Y (without track package) time... albeit it's a smaller vehicle. It matched the model Y (with track package). It was also spinning the tires at the start of the race and at the turn around, which definitely hurt its time. Turns out this powertrain is so powerful, maintaining traction is the real challenge. The Durango is so heavy that it actually helps it maintain traction better than the Challenger which helps its time, but it just can't compete with the 1900 lb weight savings and better aero in the Challenger. The Black Ghost matched the model Y (with track pack) time, but it crossed the line traveling 14 mph faster. Not only did the loss of traction hurt its final time, it also hurt the speed it crossed the line at. The differential between it and the Y could have been even larger.
This one thing i hate about dodge, they make cars with tons of horsepower but will barely keep up with cars that make half or less horsepower
People don’t get it. Adding power doesn’t necessarily add performance. More often than not it’s grip that’s lacking and-with modern cars-all that extra weight. It’s why Hellcats get gapped by cars without the motor or reputation.

@@joelzylstra2971 they should just adjust their power trains and a better suspension to put the power down effectively thats one thing I love about mustangs and Camaros even though I'm not really a fan of both cars they combine handling speed and burnouts effectively in one package I Know dodge is known for doing burnouts and straight line speed which they only deliver on prepped surface not on Normal street roads but they should try and work on their power trains to be able to put their power down at any given conditions and at the same time being a burnout beast.
Strong suit is def straight line speed, but unlike Camaro or Mustang, Dodge cars are more comfortable as dailys. It’s been proven many times on this channel that Dodge cars get embarrassed on the track and even drags on a non prepped surface with normal tires. Dodge offers a nice balance of speed, power and comfort.
@@waydephilpot3749 comfortable as a daily, I beg to differ, if I wanted a comfortable car as a daily I would go for a gt500 or a zl1 both cars are much better to drive and can handle corners on the streets they also put their power down more effectively than a dodge, meanwhile dodge on the other hand is more like a scorpion which will sting you if you Don't handle it well, they are much prone to understeer because they are heavy and their chassis can't compensate for their power
I did not expect the Durango Hellcat to be 1000 lbs heavier than a battery laden Model Y. The the price difference, they should have replaced the Y with a model X plaid.

Easy choice. I've had both, I kept the Durango Hellcat. Way more fun. It triggers so many more senses and really takes the experience to a whole different level.

@@RLang03The vast majority of countries won’t be recycling ev batteries anytime soon 😂. Plus the damage has been done mining the lithium in the first place. Both aren’t great for the environment, but at least the ice cars are fun and engaging. Plus factories, semi trucks, and burning coal (such as for electricity generation) are worse problems that should be focused on first.

Bro, the dodge is worth it for the price. Think about it, better top speed, better quality, more comfortable, and better handling. Quick in straight line isn’t everything, give the Durango a 1/2 mile and it’ll gap the Tesla more than the gaps between its panels. And it actually makes sound.

Thats not true. It increases power usage to run the cooling system longer for the battery. Without the added cooling, the battery output, and thus the power, would be lower
Then why does tesla heat up the battery before supercharging? Its to allow a higher rate of charging. This applies to discharging as well.@@RLang03

Do a Fit Sport vs Mirage hatch(or 3yl Mini Cooper) next! I get that this event tests several things, but mostly focuses on speed...however, in my opinion, the faster car isn't always the most rewarding. A Tesla is a Tesla is a Tesla; however, a Durango SRT Hellcat is like no other. Of these two, despite the "loss", the winner is the Durango. It is so much more than the speed. All senses are tripped in the Durango; not sure how many in the Tesla. Drive what makes you happy(er)...and for me it would be the Durango despite all other flaws and shortcomings. 🏁

His results (assuming they were the best results) are really really bad so I wouldn’t give him too much credit here.

Model Y is supposed to do 0-60 in 3.5 so maybe the battery was depleted or old due to age or it being hot outside.
High Temperature is even better for tesla
if the battery is too hot it will lose range and power, should be around 70-75, though the gas car will also lose power.@@George_Shonia
@@abc123fhdi ice cars lose power on hot days because of low oxygen density but this is not the case in EVs, but you can overheat your battery if you pushing its limits even in the mid winter... You've to just know your car better & you'll get optimum performance & satisfaction by it
Track mode also is using circa 10kW cooling everything down. So maybe losing 2 tenths. Would be nice for someone to prove this though

What this really showcases is brute force vs efficiency to achieve a similar performance result. The Tesla held its own while being lighter (even with heavy battties), having less horsepower, and costing nearly half of the Durango. And even with the bigger Durango having 3 row seating, it only has around 9 more cubic feet of cargo space compared to the Model Y.

With all the new Dodges, aren’t you supposed to NOT use the paddle shifts to get the best performance? I heard an engineer for Dodge do an interview, talking about how they have tested it a ton of times and found that even the very best circuit drivers still could not shift better than the automatic transmission control.

Durango should be at 3.6 sec at least to 60 you guys botched the launch cherokee and the durango should have no issues doing it consistently
I suspect they are at altitude or something... 4.0 is embarrassingly slow to 60.
@@S8ER TRX at altitude still gets under 4 sec to 60 in tfl videos so I assume the Durango with the same engine should do the same

The Durango did good I n the first race until the turn. That dodge cannot corner. The second driver just sucked at driving the Durango.
Turning off the stability control was a mistake IMHO... in track mode the Durango torque vectoring would have allowed for a much better turn while powering out.
It's all in the driving skills for sure. The Durango driver took massive wide u-turns vs the Tesla.
Track mode for tesla is for track, not drag runs... it's slower most of the time. Feels better, but slower... but I guess trying to get them both "limited" the same.
Tesla with no track mode would kept the lead for that short u turn run.
