So excited to release my second short film "The Silent Lay Steady" with Alter. I hope everyone enjoys. Questions welcome!
What was haunting Josephine?
the sound engineer should receive a medal.. great sound!
Really cool short. Suspenseful and creepy! I love it!!🥰❤💐
Lookin good
@@Bambitka1200 Thanks! I worked really hard crafting the sound design on this one. One of my favorite steps in making my films. ✌️
As a child, I remember bodies being brought to the house and displayed in the coffin under a faintly rose colored lamp until the day of the funeral. That memory still frightens me as a 63 year old woman. In this short film you brought that childhood horror back to the forefront, along with a great cast and well used spots of light. Bravo!
Thank you kindly Sally. Glad to reignite those old horrors!
Wait, I'm 59--almost sixty. You're 63 and in 1958 there were still wakes in people's homes? Where was this?
@@neverthesame7887 I grew up in Florida and still live there. My maternal grandparents and great uncles were laid out in the parlor in 1961, 1964 and 1966, as was my paternal grandfather in Georgia in 1969. Maybe it's just a southern thing, but it was quite common.
Even worse, family members would often kiss the corpse, which I just could not bring myself to do!
@@sallyoquinn My grandfather died 2004 and his coffin was outside his old house on a bed of spruce before the funeral.
I never seen it before so it may be for the older people to remember how they used to do?
He was 100 years old and this was in Northern Sweden.
It reminded me of "The others" . I loved the atmosphere created and before being scary , it is sad. Can't figure it out who are lost, the most, the ones who stays or the one who leaves. There is a time for everything.......a time to live and a time to die. We must not stop walking , no matter if the road, beneth our feet , is changing it's shape and colour .
When you realize Horror short films may just be the reality in another universe
That's how I view almost every piece of fiction. I get invested in characters and the story and won't dismiss it as a piece of fiction that shouldn't be taken seriously just because it's fiction.
Ikr, creepy thought 😱😱🥰
@@Japaneseanimeguy I feel the same way. I get so deep into the story that I can actually see what's going on. Knowing it's fictional but I can still picture everything in my mind's eye.
Why go so far when it's already a reality on our planet
Dark theory: in the mirror world she is holding a candle which gets smaller and smaller...could it be, that this candle actually represents her life left? Meaning that she is still alive in the coffin? That’s why the coffin is open and why she cannot get any rest and „wanders“ through some kind of Limbo. I mean the title doesn’t say the dead lay steady but the SILENT lay steady...? Is she in some kind of coma and they didn’t recognize it in this Victorian time period?
👍🏽😱
If she was in a coma, then he would have felt her pulse
@@GeoJessie not necessarily. The accounts of people seemingly dead from this era are numerous. There are vegetative states and comas in which the pulse is so low you can easily miss it with conventional methods....fun fact: in this period of time people often used mirrors to detect breathing and determine if someone was dead or alive.
In that type of coffin would she have suffocated? I don't think so. And why would the boy say, "Its back?" And what was the blood on her hands.
@@kimmitchell7239 Perhaps from her scratching inside of the coffin if we follow this theory.
What an absolute masterpiece! I don't have the words to explain the insane tension the film makers were able to create in under 15 minutes! Terrifying and heart breaking at the same time! Perfection!
I couldn't ask for a better comment. Thanks so much for watching. So glad you liked it Renee.
I Think This Girl Is Really Clara Delevigine Or Elizabeth Olsen?
She Looks like Vision Her Look
Is She Young Or Old ?
What Do I Think
Never underestimate the power of atmosphere in a film. This one had it. Then you still need a good story and relatable characters. We get all three and the results are a gripping and moving piece of work.
The setup was well done as I genuinely did not know where this was going.
We get a distressed father and then a great line in "Father It's Back." That grabbed me as I now want to know what's back.
We then get another perspective and more questions which are all answered by the end. At one point as a viewer. I thought the situation was reversed with the woman and the father and son.
The editing works for the overall story and was also creative.
The lighting worked well both for the time period and for that brooding atmosphere. The use of candlelight felt authentic. Also, the use of mirrors was well done.
The end is heavy. You feel for the father and yet he seems to think his gun will be effective. You also wonder how many times the situation has repeated itself night after night.
Superb film. Thanks to Travis Laidlaw, the cast, and crew. Greatly enjoyed this one.
Peace.
Wow thanks for such thorough feedback. I’m so happy it connected with you Robert. 😌
👍👏🔝
Don't you just hate not knowing you're a ghost?
Maybe that’s why no one acknowledges that I’m speaking most of the time.
@@jLo4sho I love the irony that nobody replied to this comment (except me but I don’t count)
Great atmosphere throughout. I thought for a while that the woman was actually going to be accidentally haunting a modern family, but this was much more personal. Really shows how strong grief can be. Reminds me of The Others
A few people have mentioned thinking it might go that angle actually. Thanks for watching Brent!
I love how the fear is non-specific, where it's not exactly clear what "it" is. The ambiguity makes it more intense IMO.
And this is why we cover the mirrors in the house when someone dies
Great supernatural thriller. Reminiscent of The Others and The Sixth Sense. Love these twist endings.
Definitely inspiration. Tough to compare to those beauts so I'm really glad you liked it. Thanks for checking it out.
Very high levels. Photography is something immense. The soundtrack is sublime. Magnificent short film. An intertwining from start to finish. I re-watch it. This vision reminded me of "Wake Up" from the immortals Mad Season.
I'll pass those compliments to the Director of Photography (Justin J Chambers) and our composer (Steph Kowal)! Thanks so much for watching. I'll have to check out "Wake Up".
@@TravisLaidlaw 🤘💀🤘
Important lesson: cover your mirrors when there is someone dead in the house otherwise their spirit will be trapped in the mirror.
This was great storytelling. Travis did a good job writing this film.
Thanks LBJ!
@@TravisLaidlaw No problem, Travis. I'm a Screenwriter myself and I learn from watching these short films.
Extremely well done. I hate how I can figure out what’s going on, but the mood of the piece was excellent, as were the actors. Bravo.
Thanks Dyana! Audiences are super smart these days. Happy you liked it.
Well explain
Watching alter is always a experience
Haha absolutely! Btw we make horror short films, feel free to check them out!
Always disturbing to find out that you're the ghost that haunts your house.
How heartbreaking, thank you.
It's so outrageously gothic that I was wondering "Where's the rocking chair?" Thank you, I wasn't disappointed 🤪👍
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm THE lady in black came to mind #
Bravo. Great acting, pacing of story, concept. Thanks all
Thanks for checking it out Amy! Really appreciate the kind words 😌
@@TravisLaidlaw most welcome. Hope to see more from y'all. Be well
This has a definite gothic horror feel to it. I loooooove it.
So happy you looooooved it!
It's amazing how solid execution can make a simple concept terrifying.
I *thought* she might have been the deceased one when they showed her hands being all dirty
The woman wasn't the deceased? I was under the impression she drown herself. I thought the father and son were alive, and the mother was in the coffin. She didn't realize she died, and wandered the house.
@@zethraelofteldrassil3149 Yeah, that's what I mean, though I'd not caught the drowning thing (it makes sense, though). I tried to italicize the word "thought" in my comment, but maybe it was still unclear :)
@@ianmalcolm177 Sorry, friend. You are right. I should have realized the bold "thought" meant just that. I figured she drown because of all the water hints in the film.
Certified Gold!!!!!
You are just unbelievable. You create in 15 Minutes a such dense atmosphere, other Hollywood Horror creators can learn from that. Your camera ist amazing. And the sound are just perfect. It would be an honor to play one role in this movie, but it is really to watch them as well. Go on guys and steal my sleep. I ain't need it anyway😂❤️❤️
So happy you liked it Altona!
Exactly
You just put a two hour movie into a 10 min short...wow, excellent
Thanks so much for watching Jeff. Appreciate the kind words 😌
Superbly creepy! One of the best gothic horror movies I've seen, short or full.
Wow, thanks for saying, and watching!
I felt like the music tried to do too much work in some parts. But this is my favorite short film shared on this channel in maybe a year, I don't know. It wasn't ambiguous or overly artsy. It did exactly what it needed to do to get the story across.
Thanks for the kind words Kyle. Appreciate the watch 🙌🏻
I came back to watch this again after a month 😭 that tension in the first 2 minutes and 20 seconds 👏🏼👏🏼
Superb job on this sad tale of love & death . So many avenues to traverse to find the truth of what has happened here. One mystery is why he feels the need to shoot the apparition that keeps coming back when it may have never left & we never see her or it try and harm them though he may be trying to shooting the mirror but can't as it seems to be her in it but we know it can't be , or do we really know? . Why does he move the clock hands to the same time , perhaps as she passed at that time in his mind he wants' to bring her back even though he knows he can not. . Very unnerving why she keeps coming back & seems to be malevolent yet makes no attempt to do harm unless whatever came back with her is the malevolent one. . Everything is guessing why this is happening to the kid & father , had he drowned her it's my guess she would be bent on revenge but that does not seem to be the case . great little things here like the scratching in the coffin she hears which seems to explain her hands in the beginning. Loved this one ,no gore no jump scares just a great & sad ghost story with no end in site. There's usually some reason for suicide if she did drown herself but we don't really see that here . The mystery of the unknown & unexplained is alway a fascinating tale. We are left to draw our own conclusions , as it should be . This tale reads as an old 1920s ghost story with a modern twist ,,, Great stuff absolutely brilliant .
Wow! The sound effects were awesome - creepy, scary and sad at the same time. Super acting - I could feel the terror in her heart and the sadness of her brother and father. It did remind me of The Others. Great short. 👍🏼
Thanks so much Marylou! Glad you liked it
Thanks ALTER for this experience.....the suspense, the mystery, the masterful technique of showing the darkness within the candlelight. The whole full of grief atmosphere of the house with a coffin and a single girl....then director and writer Travis Laidlaw really did wonders with his masterpiece when combining different time zones i.e. back and now. Travid Laidlaw thank you for showing masterpiece. Love you Alter
Wow. Thank you so much Ahmad. Those are some damn fine compliments. I’ll take them and save them for a rainy day ✌️😌. I love Alter too.
@@TravisLaidlaw wow much delighted to have a reply from such a talented director. Now I will save your reply. May Allah give you lots of happiness and more wisdom. Amin
WOW I loved it, I like how everything unravels at the last minute, it reminded me of the movie The Others.
My hand with phone shivered when she was looking into the mirror.
Yo you had me feel a feeling I haven't felt in so long. Suspense and acceptance of death. Wow. Thank you. It's beautiful because the silent do lay steady, some fear death so much they stay with us. In my opinion of course. Great work. An ad for Forever Purge played right before your video so let's hope people like you make it on the big screen instead of expecting this Forver Purge on July 4th 🙄😒
I'm so happy it go you in the feels. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for checking it out!
@@TravisLaidlaw yeah for sure! Keep up the good work.
Very nice sound effects and tense music.
Very nice work all around! Great story, well populated with complex, real-feeling characters. Visuals and sound mix just really worked so well. Very enjoyable film!
Thanks so much Joe. Very happy you enjoyed it.
A work of art in film, everything about this delivers atmosphere & tension. Great acting
& a wonderfully moody set, well lit & so ambient. Very enjoyable, thanks.
Really appreciate the kind words Raed
Horror short film always seems scary and creepy... Bravo 👌
OMG.. Beautiful beyond words.
Very intense! The emotions of each character felt real. Excellent job to all that's part of this film
Thanks so much for saying Alan. Glad you liked it.
This short was more sad than scary. Love it.
Soooooo good!!! Brilliantly written, directed, acted...... ❤️👍🏻🎥✨✨✨
What an endorsement! Thanks for watching Sarah 🙌
This film could have done without a music soundtrack. What's the point of suspense if the 'scary' music telegraphs every event?
The cinematography, by the way, was excellent. So was the lighting. It was beautiful to watch.
Thanks for watching Yusef!
Spencer Hanson’s acting was hands down some of the best acting i have ever watched
Loved it!!!
Definitely one of my favorites 👌
Great job 👏🏽👏🏽 I loved it 😍😍
Thank you very much for adding subtitles in Spanish, the Latin American fans thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Woww , this one is really amzing
Whoa. Even when ya' know ya' think you know...Very well done.👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Oh yeah and I kept wondering who Thomas was this lady was calling and then the man said his name and it all started coming together with haunting clarity
Thanks for watching Monique!
So good short movie thanks
sorry, one question, but what do you use to make movies? However you are fantastic !!!
He had a gun and mentioned she died from the cold. Guess he was trying to pop a cold one.
Awesomely done!😊👍
Thanks Dana 🙌🏻
Now I just feel sad...haunted
Best one yet!
Great story! I was super into every moment.
So glad you liked it 😌
😎👍10 out of 10!!!
Now that’s a rating! Thank you for watching.
The Director Has Promising Career Ahead Of Him
This was really good. 😌
Thank you Beth!
the foley was astounding.
Really enjoyed this while eating lunch. Just two comments: 1) Title should be 'lie', not 'lay'. 2) My compliments to Josephine's candle as it changed sizes so many times for each scene; even growing back from stubby to midsize. ;)
I’m glad you caught that, I noticed it too! ❤️
Thomas seems remarkably unbothered. 😄 "Father. It's back. AGAIN."
11 outta 10, very creepy!
Thanks for watching Thibo!
I love ❤️ love their shows. !!
What are the odds of me coming upon this short film just after watching The Sixth Sense? It's like it was meant to be.
Travis, Travis🙋🏽♀️😱questions😲r u kidding me, a period piece at that! Xcellent everything 💯 wait one😜Did u think of the title 1st or did it form as u were developing the story? ALTER u already know 🥰
The title comes from one of my favorite horror books "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. The original quote from the book is - "…Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone." I changed it slightly and figured the reference tied in nicely with this story. Thanks for asking!
Nice short! Reminds me of the music video "Bury Me Alive" from We Are the Fallen.
This was really good
Thanks for watching Crystal!
It's poignant when a ghost is also haunted. Ever wondered what waits?
Uhh wtf?!? It was way too dark to see anything. What happened?
It is a dark movie by design. Which is often hard to find a balance for viewers and their viewing environments. Compression doesn't help. Best to watch in the dark...with candles...in a haunted farmhouse... / Thanks for giving it a go though, appreciate it.
Awesome
Much love from teenage filmmakers 💙❤❤
Hii 🥺♥️
She is in the house at the same time as father and son, a ( parallel dimension) and thinks she’s at a wake, dressed in black… mirrors covered _ not knowing she is the one that’s dead having drowned in the ‘real world’ so she watches everything unfold repeatedly, while father and son are haunted every night when she appears in the mirror.
Glad you explained it because I watched it twice and initially thought that there were two women involved, a mother and daughter. The second time I realised that Josephine doesn't understand she died. She is haunting and haunted.
That one was very sad 😢
I always wanted to spend a day in a house from in the past. 1920s and the 1800s. I don't want to stay there, but just feel what it was like back then. I like shows/movies like this where they use the setting from a past time.
Very well done. That's how you make a movie
Thank you!
I like your videos always ❤️, I appreciate your hard work and will always support you guys ❤️❤️👍🏼👌🏻👏🏼
Love from India ❤️❤️🇮🇳
Creeeeeeeeeepy! 🙌
my god Heart beat is high
Wow!!
Your videos is the best
I agree ; )
Its kinda like the movie The Others with Nicole Kidman.
Can someone explain to me at least briefly what is going on in this short film?! I just don't understand spoken English!
The lady is deceased but because she was so violently torn from this earth through drowning she does not know she's dead. She's a confused spirit.
@@sugarjones731 (О_О) Thanks...
Great atmosphere, but I didn't get the plot at all. What is this all about? Who's dead, who's alive??
The Young Woman Looks Like Clara Delevigine
It’s the jumpscare music that makes your film scary, not the story or storytelling..
Oohhh! I liked that! A lot! Thank you
No thank you for watching!
Wow 💀💀💀💀
Well. That was unexpected
Can someone explain me what happened. Was this based on some kind of mythic.🙄🙄???
From what I get (watched twice) she thinks she is with her father's dead body ⚰ in their farmhouse 🏡 BUT she finds out she is the dead 💀one. Events replay at 7:30 every night 🕰🌙.
@@deserthoney I don’t get the ending though. I don’t see his reflection in the mirror.
I'm very stoned and thought these comments were reviewing the Uptown Girls movie trailer that I just watched... Sally O'Quinn's comment makes so much more sense now...
Gorgeous
👍😊
The scariest part was how soul sappingly boring it was.
Wow
You're a bloody ghost love!!
