Slingbow with collapsible arrows!

  • Many friends of the outdoors like the idea to have a simple hunting weapon with them when they're backpacking. A bow and some arrows are very desirable, but then again this is bulky and heavy. This video shows Jörg Sprave's outdoor slingbow/slingshot survival bag. It contains
    - A slingbow (arrow shooting slingshot)
    - Three collapsible arrows
    - Three razor sharp broadhead tips
    - A Hunter Catapult slingshot
    - Ten steel balls
    - Spare bands and string
    - A small multi tool for changing bands in the field
    The whole bag weighs less than 3 pounds (about 1200 gramms).
    The slingbow shown in this video is built around a so-called "whisker biscuit", the core of a popular arrow rest for bows. It does the job very well, but it had to be reinforced with steel in order to make it strong enough.

    True, I wanted a compact slingbow for the bag. The threaded bits are strong enough, I just had to tighten the joint a bit.
    I used common M3 nuts for the joint, glued in place. 1/2" long round aluminium nuts made in the lathe would be better. I may do that in the future.

    Glad to see that you are using basic, cutting edge style broadheads. For lighter poundage bows these more traditional style heads cut efficiently. The best (stable) flight is generally achieved with a head that has a 3 to 1 ratio. The length of the broadhead should be 3 times the width. A good rule of thumb for traditional style long bows and recurves as well.

    @JoergSprave Vulcanized rubber has only been around since 1839. There are no recorded slingshots before then. There ARE however, stonebows (since the 1300's), which I'd say are that great-grandaddy of your awesome inventions. Keep making these awesome videos- my friends didn't believe me about the cannon until I showed them. An awesome use of engineering skills!

    The collapsible arrows are home made, by myself! I sawed the full length arrows into three pieces each, then I glued M3 nuts and screws into the open ends. That was a lot of work, precision is needed for good results. The whisker biscuit was expensive, about 30 Euros.

    The arrows seem undisturbed by the joints. The balance is intact as the joints are at 33% and 66% of the length. They weigh less than 4 gramms each (so the arrow is 8 gramms heavier).

    ive been shooting slingbows for a while, im sure you're much more experienced but something i learned from "pathways survival school" videos are that you can replace the leather pouch with an actual piece of bow line so the arrow attaches easier. just a little piece of info take it or leave it but i see you enjoy experimenting and i was betting you could take this idea to whole new heights

    @JoergSprave Just so you are aware, the bent sides of the broadhead do not let the arrow spin in mid-air. They let the broadhead burrow deeper into an animal's tissue and cause a bigger channel wound. The fletchings (not feathers in this case) allow the arrow to spin in mid-air, evening out any imperfections in the arrow shaft that might cause the arrow to be less accurate. But other than that, good job!

  • @Slingshotchannel
    @Slingshotchannel  Před 14 lety

    The golf tees are bad for precision. They disturb the balance of the arrows and also they catch in the whisker biscuit. I used a special pouch with rubber contact points instead.

  • @rafaelobo1
    @rafaelobo1 Před 14 lety

    The folding whisker biscuit is bad for the precision as the folding starts while the arrow is still on its way.

    @stormpoet76 Před 13 lety

    I have often wondered why you dont use a brace on your slingshots. That slingbow is absolutely awesome. very very effective against small game and with the arrows bigger game.. I personally would carry 12 arrows. 3 is just too few. 12 insures that you can continue the hunt even if you break 11 arrows(which will likely never happen) But in a survival situation id rather not need to starve when the arrow runs away with a bad shot. Or shatters when it hits a boulder(which happens sometimes)

    @renottocs Slingbows have been around forever. There are patents that date back to the 1950s. Dave didn't invent this either. I do respect his efforts, though, quite a guy.
    There was a big slingshot hype in the 50s and 60s, with many patents issued. There is little room for completely new inventions, we are left to enhancing things if we can.

  • @purplemutantas
    @purplemutantas Před 12 lety

    @MikeFranks23 He doesn't make "wrist rocket" style slingshots because they are illegal in Germany. He also says he prefers the styles he shoots.
    Watching his videos has gotten me to rethink the wrist rocket. The wrist brace makes the slingshot more bulky. Joerg's slingshots are simple and compact and sturdy. For a survival kit, I would probably go for a Joerg slingshot over the marksman folding slingshot I used to have. But I would have to do some testing before deciding.

    you could guage the the pull of the bands the same way you guage the pull on a bow. simply hang some weights from the band and see how much it takes to reach full draw. Most recurve bows are aroung 40 to 50 lbs. It is a law here that to hunt with any bow it must have at least a 35 pound draw weight.

    @SilntObsvr True, but the techniques involved in braided slings have nothing whatsoever to do with slingbows or bows in general. In a bow or slingshot, potential energy is stored in a string or band and used to fire the projectile with percussive force; in a rope sling, the user swings the pouch, releases one end, and lets inertia launch the payload. They have nothing in common on even an engineering level.

    You should totally add a "Wrist Rocket" strap that goes on top of the forearm. It increases stability, accuracy, and power. In my formative years I accidentally killed a rabbit I just vaguely pointed at it. Struck it in the temple. I felt like shit. My mother even started working on me with "What if it had babies?" We ended up having a rabbit funeral with me weeping the whole time. I've killed nothing since. Cured me. I prefer to photograph nature now. I still like shooting my slingshot though.
