Brilliant lyricism.

They played a live BBC Sessions set and the producers at BBC said they had to censor the "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me." The singer agreed, and when that part comes up, he cranks it up to 11!! One of the greatest moments in live recording history. Highly recommend

( they freaked out over the reference to getting high on weed).So they do the song....and he lunges towards the camera and deliberately did the line AS WRITTEN ❗🎵 . Yells "HIGHER". The British public once bought this song en masse during the christmas period to make sure that the X Factor winner wouldn't get Christmas number 1 as they always did. They actually got it and the radio had to keep playing this song. Rage did a free thank you gig in the UK not long afterwards.
the forces/crosses line references the Ku Klux Klan or KKK's burning of crosses and that some of those that work forces (police forces/armed forces) are the cross-burning kind of racists. If Rage are known for anything, it's being hardcore activists and their music is a call to action. It's got that funky rhythm section and innovative guitar playing along with angry vocals that are honestly quite educational as they reference a LOT of stuff the powers that be have swept under the rug

This was written about the Rodney King beating in Cali where all the policemen involved got off of the charges of using excessive force and riots and looting began soon after the verdict was reported! One of my fav RATM song.
Yes, however, it refers it all the needless violence and evil Police in America have committed against Black people. The song's relevance today is almost gut wrenching. There isn't a day that goes by without Police in America committing violence against human beings for having the "audacity" of being Black.

If memory serves correctly, "Killing in the Name" was inspired by the 1992 Los Angeles riots - protesting the brutal beating of Rodney King by the police. Pretty sure this was on RATM's debut album.
The pedal used in the solo is a Digitech Whammy, it's basically a pitch shift pedal where rocking it back and forth lowers or raises the pitch of what you're playing.
Zack and Tom (the guitarist) were (and still are) incredibly engaged politically. Racism, police brutality, American poverty, the war machine, Wall Street. This song, the purity of its conviction, the intensity of its delivery, is art.

Gives me so many chills every time I see this! We went to a Suicidal Tendencies gig back in 93 I guess and the support was this absolutely unknown band. They haven't released their debut album yet and so it happened that people were still talking and drinking while they already had started to play. But then more and more of us people realised that something else was going on on stage. There was a certain energy developing in the room and after a while everybody started joining the mood and tension was rising until the hall nearly exploded. This was so special, everyone went crazy and we even didn't know one song! One month later the debut album landed, the success was unbelievable and half a year later they were back in town headlining. We decided spontaneously to go but when we arrived there was already a line that was 1km! long in front of the venue 😮 nuts! I've never seen a rise of a band comparable to Rage against the Machine..... Legends! No Party in 1993 without Ratm and moshpits

If I'm not mistaken when Zack DeLaRocha was a kid his mother was highly involved in activism for various social justice causes. He grew up amongst free thinking people and activists, so this was ingrained into him from a young age. So sad that it's still as relevant today than it was 30 years ago. dude… i think you would love Download festival 😃 i was trying to describe the vibe to my niece tonight because i’m taking her for the first time next year and what came out of my mouth was “it’s a crazy chill vibe. i mean, the whole place is collectively off the fucking chain, but everyone is super chill with each other.” she was a little worried she won’t fit in because she’d only ever been to hip-hop and r&b shows but listens to a lot of rock and metal as well. it’s a very welcoming environment and i felt like i was among 100,000 family members last year for my first time there 💜

Okay so I dunno if you are still reading comments on old videos, but the pedals, well, they do different things. You have overdrive pedals, distortion pedals, Wah Wah pedals, loop pedals. It's basically a way to affect or enhance your song, for stylistic effect.
When you step on one, the circuit becomes active and the current runs through it, performing its dark magic. Think of it as when you play a keyboard and you play around with the sound.

went to my first ever festival last year, I am ND so was super nervous but people were to plight and helpful.
Last year was only a single day but this year I went for 3 whole days and it was amazing but I was also completely smashed afterwards.
Both physically for moshing, dancing and walking for hours and psychologically for the overstimulation but it was worth it and def going next year.
Might even go as volounteer.

Those are guitar effect pedals, distortion, Wah Wah or Crybaby pedal, Flanger, delay, chorus, all kinds of different effect pedals. They all do different things. The high whining noise you here is the WahWah or Crybaby pedal
