      you should react to 'make me wanna die' or 'just tonight' by the pretty reckless. like in evanescence there is a strong female lead vocalist. it also goes more into hard rock than metal.

    Just going to say this, you understanding of the dissonance between the lyrics and the music being a mask is pretty much the embodiment of most of the rock/metal genre. A lot of it expresses pain and vulnerability in a more angry/distorted way.

    Spot on understanding of a nu-metal classic. A lot of the best rock and metal is about releasing your pain and anger out into the world through singing screaming and moshing leaving behind a feeling of freedom and joy. It's like a doctor lancing a boil cleaning out the infection to promote healing.

    I'm not really much of a rap/hip-hop enjoyer but I love when y'all examine rock/metal. Y'all look at more than the surface level that so many do. The lyrics of metal are equally if not more important than the music as the lyrics are the story being told or the emotions being felt. For many metal music and the aggression it has is therapeutic. Knowing that others feel the same way and having a way to express those feelings in a nondestructive way is important so thank you for being doing this justice.

  • @Duke00x
    @Duke00x Před 7 měsíci +3

    Papa Roch was part of the late 90s early 2000's NU-Metal trend. NU-Metal was a mix of metal, punk, hip hop/rap and sometimes pop. So if you react to more late 90s early 2000's music you will mostly find hip hop/rap and NU-Metal bands and so you will likely always find some hip hop/rap in all songs from that time frame and if you don't then it will likely be a rock/metal and punk mix or a punk and pop mix or a rock/metal and pop mix. There was other types of music at the time but that was the majority of the mist mainstream popular music at the time. On the country side at the time we had country rock with became big in the early/mid 90s but we also started to add hip hop and pop to country in the late 90s and early 2000's. So even country from that time could have hip hop mixed with it or even more some rock mixed with it or pop.

    • @Duke00x
      @Duke00x Před 7 měsíci +1

      Also if you couldn't tell pop music was big then as well. Remember the late 90s early 2000's was also peak boy band and Britney Spears and the like and even hip hop/rap had pop mixed with it and visa versa. Like the 60s there was a lot of cross genera experimentation and made the music hard to classified into a single genera of music.

    When you put distortion on a guitar and crank the gain, combined with the right amount of reverb and some high-frequency pickups, you get that fuzzy and gritty sound. This was one of my favorite songs to play when I first started playing guitar in high school 17-ish years ago. Damn I feel old now…😅

  • @alexmajor6579
    @alexmajor6579 Před měsícem +1

    The melody in the chorus and verse is the same melody. The chorus the strings are open but in the verse the guitarist is gently resting his palm on the strings as he plays to produce that more muted tone on the notes. It's called palm muting and is a very common guitar technique in many forms of music.

  • @-Gurza-
    @-Gurza- Před 4 měsíci

    My favourite part of this song's arrangement is ironically near the end where, if you pay attention at 9:16 on the lyric "CAN'T," there's a note addition to the power chord that's usually strummed at this part of the chorus, which you can hear more clearly at 9:27

    The muted version of the main guitar riff you're hearing is being played by the same person, on the same guitar. They're just muting the strings during the verse. You rest the meat of your picking hand across the strings, just enough to deaden the vibration so you can still make out the notes but the strings don't ring out like they would normally. It's a super common thing in metal, it's how you get that chuggy sound.

    So, the music technique used in the verses that you were mentioning is called palm muting. Basically, you place the side of your palm at the base of the strings when plucking them. It creates a really chunky low resonance tone, which is what you’re hearing. It is done with a regular electric guitar.

    Growing up I loved rock, metal and numetal and had no one I could relate to, it’s so cathartic and brings me so much joy seeing someone around my age and from the UK too who is really GETTING this music. It’s not just ‘screaming’ and ‘being angry’. It’s vicarious expression, it’s catharsis. This song has such painful lyrics but it’s angry, almost victorious and pushing back. It’s not despair in tone, it’s ‘I’m sick of this shit’. You can shake, mosh and headband it all out

    The rock genre has many sounds and levels. All kinds of hard rock/heavy metal and even slow rock - like the classic rock ballad. You are in for a treat in this rabbit hole and I am here to witness it. Also, when it comes to the guitar, it can also be quite versatile, You have the rhythm guitar, you have the lead guitar, and you have the bass guitar. The electric guitar can also have different sounds depending on the note things are played in as well as the use of what's called distortion.

    One rock/metal band that surprises people a lot with their songs is Slipknot, people see the masks and outfits and think "This is definitely a devil worshiping metal music with screaming" but most people seem surprised when they first hear them. There's a few songs that are commonly reacted to, Psychosocial, Duality and Snuff (Usually the Corey Taylor acoustic live version)... Absolutely nothing like Papa Roach, mind you, but something you might be willing to dip your toes into lol.

    People who don't listen to rock/metal or think it's to aggressive, they have a tendency to assume the songs are about hate, violence and chaos. They also assume those who listen to it are violent, psychopaths, or angry individuals.
    The truth is, rock/metal is an aggressive style with lyrics that have very deep meanings. The aggressive style of singing it, is a form of letting go of the pent up anger and sadness. Those who listen to it, it is a gateway for us to release our emotions and knowing that, you as a listener, are not the only one with those emotions and pent up anger, and it helps us let all of it go. In a way, it's like those artists know exactly how we all feel and they know exactly how to help us relieve some of that stress, pressure and anger. That's why most rock/metal artists and listeners are often more relaxed and kind. If any of that made sense to anyone.
    This is my honest opinion.

    I love your enthusiasm to things you’re unfamiliar with!!! This is absolutely the right way to go into rock and metal music bc several subgenera’s of both are categorized as ‘extreme music’ and you might need some exposure to lighter rock and an open mind to be able to appreciate what people might start suggesting. I think some good suggestions for you would be: Cirice by Ghost, and possibly also Mary on a Cross by Ghost as well. I Hate Everything About You and Riot by ThreeDaysGrace are both rock staples imo. Some ‘newer’ bands (aka bands after the late 90’s-early 2000’s rock wave) that would be great for you to listen to are Pierce The Veil and Bring Me the Horizon. Early bring me is considered part of an extreme music genere so I’d say start with songs from That’s The Spirit and amo. For Pierce The Veil, I recommend songs from Collide with the Sky, Misadventures, and Selfish Machines!
    Sorry for the book, but I hope you keep enjoying and having fun exploring rock and metal!! There are even some other reaction channels who started as hip hop and rap fans that also became metal fans through their reactions as well, so you aren’t the only person who has branched super out of their comfort zone, and from you currently positive reception I hope you’ll end up being a fan too!

    Soooo welcome to the era of rock/rap bands. Linkin Park is arguably the standout of this era, but also Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach for sure. You literally couldn't turn on MTV in the early 2000s without seeing 1 or all 3 of them. As for the guitar you asked 'why and how is it making that noise, thats called a chord progression to start with. As for the how, during the verse its called a 'palm mute' essesntially the guitarist is using his hand to keep the strings from vibrating just enough so it doesn't have the full sound, thus 'muting it' The riff itself is just eigth notes played in an upwards and downwards motion on the strings
    doing a deep dive into rock: I think you should! everybody has this debate about rock/metal / hiphop/rap and really both are the same utilizing different techniques. Rap focuses on the lyrics as the content utilizing metaphors, double entendres etc to get its message across where as rock/metal is just in your face 'here is the subject in the verse' in the chorus we will tell you why we are angry in the second verse we will expand on that further, repeat the chorus, have a badass guitar solo and a repeat of the chorus
    but the message is there and it isn't always just straight anger. As a listener of both rap and rock and metal i find the differences to be relaxing and cathartic.
    Papa Roach Songs to Listen to:
    1) Broken Home
    2) She Loves me Not

    What really got me in Ronnies version is he did that guitar riff with the piano and it was so satisfying. I think youd like to hear....honestly Miley cyrus with Metallica-nothing else matters (on the howard stern show). Mind blowing.

    There's a band from the early '90s called Snapcase, and they basically made two whole albums full of pinch harmonics which is that guitar sound that you're referring to in this song. The most well-known of those Snapcase songs is from their album lookinglasself.. The song is called drain me/filter. The sort of rap rock/ rap metal was really big in the New York hardcore scene in the late '80s early '90s. Biohazard is probably the most famous of all of those bands, but that style kind of wound down by 1996/97 in NYC And that was basically the rise of all the nu-metal bands like limp Bizkit and Papa Roach. Anyway, yeah, It's an awesome song, but none of what they're doing is original and it's a little messed up that they don't acknowledge the roots cuz you'll hear bands like Papa Roach say that they've never heard of snapcase or biohazard or whatever. But then you see them do all this posturing on stage that's straight out of the hardcore scene..

    This song really spoke to me when it came out, it reminded me how many times music literally saved my life by making me feel like I wasnt alone in the place I was, it gave me an outlet and an ability to scream it out.
    I feel you on not getting into big shows, the energy is off the charts, but it is way too claustrophobic for me. Try smaller shows, club venues can be very energetic without the social overload. Some of the best shows I have been to were smaller, and it felt like there was more connection between the band and the fans

    Went to a Disturbed concert recently, David pulled a guy on stage he talked to backstage to relay his story. The guy then told the story.. about a decade ago he was a total metalhead, long hair, drugs, the works.. and he came to a Disturbed concert and heard one song. That song is targeted at dealing with addiction and reminding you you're loved. The very next day, he entered treatment... I'll skip some time and say that he's completely clean, married, and just a few months before the concert, got his masters in Social Work so now he's helping others clean up, get back on their feet, and working as counselor.

    Music IS cathartic, all music but especially rock. Even without lyrics. Guitars sing and cry, drums and bass rumble and beat and reflect what we are feeling and make us feel. You got it as you reveled at the end of the song.

    You have got to listen to The Hu and Jacoby Shaddix singing Wolf Totem…. it’s fucking epic!!!
    I adore this song and Robbie’s version just highlighted how brilliant it was. This was a scream of rage and frustration whereas Ronnie’s was a cry for help. Both incredible.
    Love how you got why Rock is so important to those who love it… it’s why I will always be a rock chick. Love the reaction. 🖤🖤🖤🖤

    3:00 There's a Papa Roach poster because all these people that they're showing in the video are supposed to be their fans; you see as the camera zooms in and out on members of the audience then shows the individual in their room, to give you an insight as to who each of them are. (Which you nailed at the end... 😂)
    That "tall" poster is Metallica. 😜And I also see an NWA one near the ceiling...

    In Jacoby's version here was back in the early days of the youth being angry and in Ronnie's version we are older and its more slowed down. If that makes any sense? Like being young we are full of piss and vinegar and now that we are older and we are just trying to be heard

  • @xtldc

    Your realization about the comradery in metal music is highly accurate - in addition though, Jacoby has always had a very magnetic personality and people just naturally gravitate to him. I went to high school with him and the other guys in the band (except their current drummer since he replaced the original guy) and he always had lots of people hanging around with him.
    For example, we could leave campus for lunch and he would always drive a bunch of us who couldn’t drive yet to go get food. There would be 2 people sitting with him in the front of his tiny pickup truck and then another 6-8 of us piled into the back under the camper shell where we would usually smoke a joint before eating. Those are some good memories.

    What you were talking about at the end of the video is actually a really important part of metal to a lot of people. Because everyone got their burden to bear, everyone needs to mask over it all day long. And there's always the thought, that your problems don't even matter in comparison to what others are facing. And you would certainly not let anything out, be it not to hurt others or not to get hurt yourself. For a lot of people (or at least for me), being at a concert or a festival is an opportunity to escape all that. When you put on your bandana to protect against the dust, you also take off the mask that protects you from other's judgement. I've gone through all kinds of emotion in the pit. I've had mental breakdowns, bursting in tears in the middle of a song. I have jumped right into three guys who were taller than me, just because the song that was playing unleashed an anger inside me that I had been suppressing. Also, I've been hopping up and down to a party song (shoutout to electric callboy) or screamed out my lungs to an anti-fascist fight-song. I can personally say that the mosh-pit is the best therapy I've ever had. Going in with depression, hatred, sorrow and whatever, and coming out with a bloody nose, scratches on the arms but a big ass fucking smile.

    I can't recall who it was that said this, another reactor I think, but but posed that its almost like the two version of this song, Papa Roach and Falling in Reverse, represent depression at different stages of life. Papa Roach is teenage depression, its raw and angry and it wants fight you. Falling in Reverse is adult life, desperation, trying to hold everything together outwardly but crumbling inside. I really lliked that comparison.
