Just picked one out of a trash pile yesterday. 1976... We will see.

Almost as good as your deal. I just picked up a 1978 4hp Johnson for 50 Euro. Looking forward to getting it running after 3 years sitting around.

I love how hard getting the motor cover and housing is. Super tough

These motors new had 85 lbs of compression, You will never see over 100 psi on one of these and they will Idle perfectly with 65 lbs And dont run 100 t0 1 or youll burn it up . The factory said to remove the sticker and run 50:1 only!!!! 40 yr Johnson Tech PS new h20 pump and head gasket every two yrs.

Yes, TC3 @ 50/1. Do NOT run 100/1. Way too lean for your nice little motor. Make sure your water pump is working. Treat is nice and it will run forever.

What kind of compression does that motor have

Nice guy, but a bit he left out some key stuff. Betcha he forgot to open the petcock on the fuel tank and no gas is getting to the carb. Didn't mention if there was anything fuel in the carb bowl when he too apart the carb for the second time.

keep in mind, OMC changed back to 50:1 based on failures. 100:1 rating was only around for a few years. 1985-1988 I think.
I have a 1982 4hp Johnson, and a 1997 4hp Evinrude. I paid $120 for both and both did not run but the Johnson was in a will- run state.. The Evinrude was locked up.. The Johnson I got running but needs ignition tune up. The Evinrude however, I was able to free up very easily, blew 120 PSI cold right after, and then I managed to get that one running very easy, but swapped in a different year carb to make it run perfect

I have been running it at 50:1. On a 2 stroke, I get nervous when I don't see smoke.

90 psi is good for that little 2 stroke.
