    As an N&W fan, I love how you guys expertly tried to create what very well could’ve been a PRR steam engine. I find the headlight arrangement and tender design to be the most unique, especially considering the N&W heritage of the design. Look forward to seeing future models!

    • @KLTrainz
      @KLTrainz  Před 5 lety +25

      I had tried to keep the engine as "N&W" as I figured the PRR would have kept it, judging by what they did with the C&O T1 turning it into the PRR J1, I did however make a few additions like the belpaire firebox and repositioning a few of the domes to change the whistle positioning like how most PRR engines tended to have it. But since it never actually happened, we never will know what it would have looked like. This is just what I had imagined!

      @@connorflaherty175 I heard of this test almost 20 years ago, but never had the means to make it happen. Now that I had an N&W A class, a ton of PRR engines, and resources to make it happen, this seemed like a good time.

    I heard they might've made a few other engine designs:
    -FF2 2-6-6-2 (based off USRA light mallet)
    -HG1 (extended and articulated version of Q1 and Q2)
    -GG2 (baldwin's variant on the challenger)
    -DD2/T2 (4-4-4-4 articulated mixed traffic locomotive. Name was never decided)
    -P6 (basically a "K4 baltic" 4-6-4)
    -AA1 (heavy articulated switcher)
    -DB1 (a T1 precursor, with no streamlining or trailing truck)
    Edit-I meant FF3, PRR already had FF2 electrics

      K&L trainz takes commissions. Someone pays them X amount of money for their engine to be put into Trainz.
      They don’t take suggestions. Check their projects list. They have Arcade and Attica 18 up next, followed by GTW 6325. These were paid by various people who wanted fantastic designs of their engine in trainz. Anything from a simple engine to an entire consist can be included, ex the 261 project might include the excursion consist or maybe some freight cars, the L1 project might include the chessie passenger train and some conventional c&o coaches, etc.
      Don’t “suggest” to K&L that they should ever do anything. They won’t listen and won’t care about what you want because they have their own projects to work on, and to them it could be annoying, even. If they did take suggestions they’d be bombarded with foamers.

    The thing that shocks me is how fast some of the steam locomotives could go.Forget the 35 mph.Locomotives of this time would go over 100 mph.And even freights where known to get down the line.During ww2 didn,t the santa fe get a few of n&w 2-8-8-2 and 2-6-6-4.I know I saw pictures of these locomotives in books.

    • @KLTrainz
      @KLTrainz  Před 5 lety

      These particular engines had 70" drivers, so a max speed would be in the 70-75mph range. Anything above that is stressful on the parts, but not impossible. N&W was known for using the A's on hot freights that needed higher speeds, so it's assumed these would have done the same, although the PRR M1's were the go-to's for the fast freights.

    Two things: PRR's Q-2 was actually pretty close size wise. Just make one drive axle a pilot axle and you would have the 4-4-6-4 of the Q-2, albeit rigid frame and not articulated. Also as far as a main line articulated would go, I think PRR would have put the headlight on the pilot beam as it would move with the front engine around curves. Still it is a nice looking creation and a beautiful "what if."

    I’m sure this type would’ve eventually replaced the 4-4-4-4; seeing that this type of articulated locomotive had less problems when the N&W used it, this could’ve very well been a fast freight/passenger locomotive on the PRR. Alas, one can o my dream. Maybe the railway would’ve been more successful if they adopted this design

    • @TristanMorrow
      @TristanMorrow Před 5 lety

      The 2-10-4 did. PRR class T1 4-4-4-4's ran with a higher boiler pressure but lower TE than the Chessie design 2-10-4's - at the price of doubling the number of complex parts to be maintained...
      PRR was looking for speed and efficiency, and the way to get it with most of the designs they tried was with that 4-wheel tailing truck + large firebox -as in the Baldwin Duplex, which _wasnt_ articulated- and, of course, the large-diameter, high-speed roller bearing drivers.
      N&W class A's had *twice* as many _moving parts_ as the PRR J1's, but the *same* _TE per driving axle_ ...so no advantage for the 2-6-6-4 vs 2-10-4, especially with wartime draft and labor shortages in the PRR maintenance shops. Good thing Trainz doesn't have realistic maintenance costs!!

    This is amazing work! But I don't think the PRR would have gone with an "alligator" crosshead. Their larger modern steam engines seem to use the multiple-bearing type.

      Never know because the design they did go with already had the single overhead crosshead guide similar to what their own engines already used. If they went with the N&W A design, it may have been one thing they did or didn't change. The design was already proven beyond efficient with them, so there probably wouldn't have been a need to change them.

    You guys should do something similar with the T1's Original 4-4-4-4 "Camelback" design

    Would be neat if VMT could dress up N&W 1218 as a PRR FG-1 (as much as possible) so we could get a "real-life" example for a little while

    Pardon me, but can I also use some of the footage of the FG-1? (Video material of this concept is scarce and I could fit it Into my video alongside the Hudson you allowed me to use.)
